I think that Portal 2 takes in a new facility, Apeture East, and this time you're forced to work with 3 other test subjects: Damien, a Caucasian male in his mid-20s with telekinetic powers, Kralta, a vortigaunt with control of Vortigese "magic" , and Security Android 749 (nicknamed Second), who has a rocket launcher as his armament. When the four join, they have to complete the tests and get the cake. Also, you'll be able to switch characters, or play in co-op. Cool concept, eh?

The neurotoxin vents were likely constructed as a last ditch defense system in the event of an attack ala black mesa style.

It is likely however that this was a combine training/testing center in the fact that GLADOS mentioned cyborgs, which compose the mainstay of the combine forces. There is also the fact that there was the physical addition of the shock absorbing springs... seeing as how the combine have no reservations against cutting people into useless servitors

GLADOS also seems to bear combine architecture ala overwatch styling, every automation including the turrets is styled distinctly like the overwatch style.

There is reasonable cause to believe that your character dies at the end because hey, you just breathed in neurotoxin
