  • Oh what nostalgic moments these Beatles songs bring to me. But they are a source of remembrance as a youth brought up in a new musical environment which made us independent and so strong.

  • i first heard this version about 20 years ago -played by jj-jackson on a beatles special seems yoko had it for years in a closet like herself and decide that the other beatles could have it

  • Music goes through phases. You just have to look further and deeper.

  • Even though incomplete, this version is even more moving than the final version.

John's solo work is my favourite of any of the Beatles by far!

  • Amazing

  • ¥There is beautiful music still being made...(Jeremy Enigk - River to Sea: to maybe show u a path..he has kind of J.L. solo sound) they don't choose the same path as in.. signing deal making videos etc...they've been going in and out of style..but they're guaranteed to raise a smile :-)

"What's the next best thing to be..."

J.L. had s gift for taking simple phrases and using double meaning's...even before Lucy ;-)

  • JOHN has the raw power and please look the official video, like georgie's face recording. He was very happy to record the song of his friend john. NOT PAUL, I LOVE THE BEATLES

  • So when the beatles redid this they were completely faithful to this... McCartney just filled in the gaps. They used every audible line Lennon used here.

  • great song

  • @643neil No, thats not true...He has given us so much with his music. All of us! :) John is the best!!!

  • @TieFreaty Rusko, The Black Keys, Kid Cudi, Avicii, James Vincent McMorrow, Bon Iver, Cee Lo, The Roots... The list goes on. Stop complaining.

  • why did u die before I was born?? :( oh john u are my idol, for ever!!!

  • @janekullerkeks he will always be my

  • Paul found the perfect missing lyrics, rest in peace John !

  • @MrWaqmaz Naaa, just a realist - and very honest about things.

  • He was a very sad person.

  • Rest In Peace John Albrigo. Forever in my mind and heart <3.

  • the beatles so much this to say about them... the beatles had no greater, even queen was below them, and below queen chuck norris

  • In my opinion he's one of the best, if not the best, man in the world! His message of peace and love still lives on today through his fans. R.I.P John Lennon!

  • my absolute favorite....

  • @TieFreaty....Beebs and such are sideshows....it's folks like NewPornies, BlackKeys, Fire, Decemberists, that carry on the Beatles legacy, and others, by forging new directions. The market is too fragmented now for a band with Beatles-esque transformative powers....

  • john winston lennon....greatest artist, human, man, creature, soul, child, husband, father, friend to all humand kind. I was 2 years old when you died but I miss you so much every day. Thank you for giving it all to us, I wish I could have seen you once in Person!

  • the 20th century had the beatles, acdc, iron maiden, motley crue, ozzy, etc... and what o we have in the dearest 21st century? justin bieber, cody simpson, katy perry, lmfao, etc.... is this really what music has come to?

  • @TieFreaty so true so true....it hurts so much not to have lived that generation...i envy my parents for it, having seen the beatles live...i would pay with one of my kidneys to see them live

  • @TieFreaty We have Foo Fighters at least.

  • @TieFreaty well we also have simple plan, alestorm, my chemical romance, red hot chilli peppers (they still make songs now) etc...

  • @DutchEvilEvi None of which express the same pure artistry that Lennon, Harrison, McCartney, and Starr did.

  • @TieFreaty you can go to any bar to see real bands play rock and roll or just good music. If you are a Tv slave well you will never find anything. There is good music because there is people with good taste who follow people like Lennon, people with brain so get out and dont think more about Bieber (plastic people plastic!) greets froms argentina!

    JCD

  • @TieFreaty None of the artists you mentioned were around by 1912 so I think it might just be early days yet ;)

  • @TieFreaty In our defense, it has only been the first ten years of the 21st Century.

  • @TieFreaty Great musicians and cool bands are still giving the fight out there, the problem is that good music is less and less popular everyday.

  • @TieFreaty

Who is Cody Simpson and LMFAO? Those other two suck btw!

  • @TieFreaty Don't forget about Floyd, Zeppelin, and The Beach Boys!

  • @TieFreaty Maybe once we start hitting the 2060's music will start to come together again.

  • i didnt know that old guy hubert in family guy was voiced by john lennon

  • @lylecoastguard90 hilarious... I hate myself for laughing

  • @imamymay haha i felt bad for pointing it out

  • Look the guy was human. Was he perfect? Of course not. But how would our lives and reputation look to the world if there were umpteen books written about us and every little bad thing that we did was publicized? Was he a great father? Absolutley not. Did he have flaws? Many. But what did he leave the world? What is he known for and what will he be known for years from now? Did he shape the world for the better and inspire people positively? Thats whats important.

  • This is the purest thing. Oh well, there's something in my eye :(

  • I have not realized at my early age who you were John but it feels like I have known you forever through your music, thank you

  • To everything there is a season.

  • Lovely. Just so pure. Thanks for sharing it.

  • THANK YOU for this. I had never heard the original Free As A Bird before, so this is very cool. I miss this guys voice and his powerful positive influence. I think the world would be a better place if Lennon were still here, telling the truth thru his powerful and incredible voice. It's a real shame that one creep took him from all of us

  • @beatleness I agree, I was born that very day he was taken from us, I was coming into this world 2 minutes after he left it, I know we passed in the ether....now im pregnant with a baby due on Johns Birthday!! Profound. But I liked your comment..

  • Oh God Where So Art our Leaders?

  • Even the saints aren't saints; that's all PR. John tried to be a good person by his own lights-he knew he had problems -he eventually faced them, worked on them, and emerged a greater and better person. The sense that he was, like us all, a work in progress, is what moves me about John Lennon. He was real.

  • Wow... John!

  • I cry. I always cry.

  • 25 subnormals need a kick en his ass.

  • Who could dislike this?

  • there are 25 subnormal that prefer justin bieber

  • Damn, he arranged the harmonies with nothing left to be done... no words to describe this superb masterpiece...

  • is like dung>>>fag men

  • put your rag over your ears then!

  • most of you don't know what a bad father is. Your probably some chick that sounds like this.Oh your never at home is that all you do is work work work or go find a job you lazy sob go find a job. Do you have even the slightest idea the amount of time it took to write music lyrics and the music at all. About 500 songs published, for everyone published they threw out one or two. That's probably how most english bands got there music dumpster diving behind apple records.

  • ii like this

  • Takes me back to 1995, I was just getting into the Beatles then this came out with Real Love shortly after. The Anthology documentary and cd blew me away- so nice to finally hear the demo tape, thanks for posting!!

  • Not you or anyone else is in the position to say what kind of father and husband he was. I've followed his life and never heard Julian or Cynthia say a word about him.More than likely you have no idea what it's like in a bad home. You should have had my life abused every way possible and I mean every way. I can only imagine the pressure he was under and despite being the judge and jury you can't either so take you snotty attitude and shove it up your ass.

  • @marlonmillburn67 there def is a vid on youtube of julian talking not so greatly about his dad.

  • how ironic that john left the middle eight bit unfinished ("whatever happened to the life that we once knew....") and paul finished it off 20 years later ("can we really live without each other..."). just like they did with each others songs with the beatles.

  • This is incredible.

  • @tojoinbobdylan

Just what i thought... 1st listen EVER... 19 Dec 2011 23:05 GMT, Just Incredible

  • This is the best version by miles. I Love John Lennon so much.

  • I do not know what to say so I will leave a smile ;)

  • it helps the living.....brings insight....hope.....reminds you oif a life lesson

  • Touching melody

  • WOW............THANKS FOR THE POST

  • a man with a free spirit ...

  • Rest in peace john :)

  • Rest in peace John. You're my idol and I never lived to see you.

  • @itsawarmgun oh did you die before he was born?

  • @MrBenedictDonovan Vice versa. Perhaps I worded that wrong.

  • @itsawarmgun haha thanks for replying to my pedantry ;)

  • @MrBenedictDonovan I found it pretty funny. Haha

  • I feed the sparrows. they dont leave in the cold winter. They are kinda stuck. I love their strength and they sing every day . so beautiful. Love how John says boid. he had the humor too. a big great soul

  • 24 people aren't free like birds.

  • A voice that sends shivers down my spine.

  • @MrSteef2 the best voice ever!

  • He sure is.

  • Comment removed

  • @kaosvarkas i agree, people make mistakes, some dont learn from them, when john seen his mistakes he corrected them, the government dont......

  • this song when i listen to it even though im not a religious person, it reaches my soul

  • regardless of john lennon being alive or dead (clearly dead) i believe his messages live on inside all of his fans as well as other people through his music, poetry, Yoko, his life and of course his children he will never be forgotten and i'm sure if he was alive today he'd protest so much including the war in iraq so you see i think he still does care even though he's dead hes's still alive in many aspects of the word! and that we should never forget R.I.P *John Lennon*

  • Lennon was really extraordinarily talented chap...his lyrics externalized the internal world of human beings

  • Free as a bird is the next best thing to being free as a bird. I'm sure the repeat of free as a bird is meant to be a filler until he could come up with something appropriate that rhymes and fits, but It's kind of a blessing that didn't happen. Free as a bird is the next best thing to being free as a bird is way evocative and enigmatic. A mindful to ponder.

  • johnmy man

  • Beautifull voice, love you John ((ºjº))

  • fantastic song!

  • John may not have been a saint. However, there aren't too many of us who have ever inhabited this planet who can claim to have been. Considering the childhood he had and then the pressures he and the others faced throughout their careers he did pretty well. He certainly left his mark on this existence we call life. I'm sure there are things that went on that we will never know about, good and bad, but he did the best he could to make a difference. Surely the world will never forget John Lennon.

  • @kaosvarkas Agreed entirely My sentiments too We can all be a bit of a git on occasion, but the main thing is you try , to make a differance to others & try to be the best you can... John , Saint? No! LEGEND & Working class Hero ? YES! Remembered ? ALWAYS !! ;-)

  • @kaosvarkas can I marry you? this is exactly why I love John, he was a genius, he was talented and funny, and he had a beautiful soul - But he also made many mistakes and he was not by any means a saint, he was as human as the rest of us and not afraid to show it. And I wouldn't want him any other way.

  • @kaosvarkas he was human just like the rest of us my friend R.I.P J Lennon

  • John wasn't a saint. He preached peace and love but he could be a bit of a bastard too. Ask Julian Lennon how great his dad was. Don't get me wrong, I love John, but some of these comments about how great he was are a bit much.

  • @singleh27 Dick

  • @singleh27 We are all sefish to a degree, Its nobodys job to judge John Lennon, including you. Enjoy what he gave us.

  • I always get upset and disappointed everytime I hear abt those things, hwever I dont judge him,I cant, he is the music god but it's impossible for us to know him wholly,it was impossible for anyone even those who had a very close relationship with him. By looking his song we could understand the profound, pure and hard-pressed soul of him longing for the freedom. When I think about little John deprived of family love, care and compassion, I would love to hug him tight and say how much I do love him

  • @singleh27 That what makes him human. He truly is a great person, no question about that.

  • @TheDireWolfsLair Totally agree, that's what I was going for when I made my comment. John wasn't perfect, so no need to make him St. John Lennon.

  • @singleh27 well he was human like us wasnt he?

  • @xradio86 That was exactly the point I was trying to make. Some of these other comments about him being God like or perfect are ridiculous. John himself would tell those people off.

  • @singleh27

    Nobody is perfect.

  • @KillianReed That's what I was going for with my comment. Glad we agree then.

  • @singleh27 "you judge a man based on what he does; you judge an artist based on his work." M. D.

  • Man?

  • @awakeningtam no, an Argonian

  • yes good point ...John was human a human angel!

  • @singleh27 i know ive got a book about the beatles and it says when john was young he used to go up bihind old people and go boo! to them and he used to draw cruel and disturbing pics. when i read it i was shocked ):

  • @ryandeakin5878 Oh every kid plays pranks. Nevermind the silliness of his youth. It's obvious he became so much more.

  • @terrywest111 oh yea stupid me

  • John Lennon was a special person, there's no two ways about it. What a stunningly beautiful song. As anti-religion as I am , I'm tempted to say, this is the voice of God.

  • I also wanna be free as a boid. boids are cool

  • @alonsh4 a doity boid sat on a coib at toidy toid and toid

  • I can imagine this song echoing as I leave my body when I die.

  • :.)

  • Free... as a boid

  • I agree with SatoriKensho. John was a unique person journeying towards becoming a super cool Buddha like guy.

The world really needed him in the last decade! A voice to break through all of the static of the internet.

    Still missing him today.

  • what happened to John voice?

  • This song, especially the original demo, gives me chills. It is a beautiful song. No matter what, John Lennon will always live on.

  • I feel like John Lennon, if he had lived, would be the greatest man alive today. There is no more love. There is no more tolerance. Where is his message when we really need it?

  • @SatoriKensho Imagine if Reagan had died, while Lennon had lived. The 80s wouldn't have been anything like they were. The Republican domination of American politics couldn't have happened. The world would be more peaceful and content overall.

  • @ebonics4everyone What would John have done? He'd left politics alone a long time before he died. There are no political songs after about 1974. I think he was well and truly done putting himself out there in the political sense. I'm sure he still had some of the same views, but he wasn't as out there with them. Do you think he would have run for office or something? Definitely not! If he had spoken up about anything, people would have just looked on him the same way they do any celebrity.

  • @ebonics4everyone : Stop revering the fantasy that the parties Republican & Democrat are at loggerheads with one another. Stop trusting televised/teleprompted corporators. America is run by ONE cabal of elitists.

  • @ebonics4everyone that is why the govenment killed him...

  • @PutItAway There is not even the slightest hint of Scouse in the voice on this recording. It sounds like an American trying to put on a Socttish accent.

  • @62szabadsag Huh?? If you can't tell that's Lennon's vocal, you must be either tone deaf or not very familiar with his music. This is a from a series of three demos recorded on cassette at the Dakota apt in 1977. He uses that speaking voice on all three versions, imitating a NY accent. They've been available as bootlegs long before Youtube came into existence. The surviving Beatles and Jeff Lynn used the piano and vocal to produce a studio version released on the Anthology album in 1995

  • @ritter89 Well said. And in any case, George was the only one of them whose Scouse accent was audible in his singing voice. And, though I quite like the spoken Scouse accent, I don't really want to hear it sung. (Example from GH's "Only a Northern Song": .."what clothes I wer or how I fer or if my her is brown...)

  • Another fake so some wanker can boost his number of views.

  • @62szabadsag It's real you retard. Don't comment if you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • I love him.

  • Anybody knows when this was recorded? And why he didnt finish this masterpiece?

  • @BanjoBazookie he died before he could, same with "Real Love"

  • He was amazing.

  • pinche basura tu culo mama guevo

  • I'd love to see Lennon when he recorded this !!

  • Happy Birthday Dude! Thanks for changing my life!

  • @vandoren59 You arent the only one, A big hug from Colombia.

  • happy birthday John, haunting

  • happy birthday !!!! GENIUS!!!

  • Dude, thanks for the post. This is excellent. Happy birthday John.

  • FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS JOHN , SOS EL HUMANO MAS GRANDE QUE EXISTIÓ EN ESTE PUTO PLANETA, SALUD ESTES EN DONDE ESTES!

  • A beautiful and haunting tribute. You can picture Sir John singing this, as he fades away and evaporates into nothing like a ghost. #9

  • Cannot beat Harrison's AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING!!! - by the way; Susanna Hoffs has a very good cover of it; AYBCS, I mean...

    ed

    w w w eddy nu

  • We all miss you.......Jhon

  • I have loved this ever since its release. But this is the first time I have heard this version, it is so sad it mad me cry almost.

  • how is it possible to dislike this song?

  • I only heard this on Anthology. So after I listened to this, I didn't even make it through a minute without crying.

  • This really is a classic before it's time.

  • I love the picture of the band at 0:47-1:00 !

  • Comment removed

  • es el mejor de los mejores, chingon d para la mùsica, sin luhar a dudas es un mostruo en la musica

  • i can become gay beacuse of john

  • I love you forever john!

  • This is probably the most brilliant song that John wrote about his prision time with The Beatles and the fake Paul. He is singing about how he is Free from the Beatles....but it is still a durge...slow...depressing...it is not a happy song. It expresses that John knew what was comming for him, he knew it had to be.

  • @TommYYZ you know john and paul still remained friends during the 70's? they even had a jam session in 74' you can find it on youtube its called like a toot and snore? Imagine had made it seem as though it was paul that killed the beatles and he was the enemy, in which was totally opposite. Sure they had a few bad words towards to the start but that subsided quickly and they were ready to start again just didnt have the motivation.

  • @ilikeblondie Does not prove anything. Remember, John knew the people he was dealing with "Go and tell your Momma, everything" John singing about the people who essentially invented the fake Paul in 66. he had to keep up appearances not only while recording in the 60s and 70s but after. John knew he cold not do a press release about what had happened so he put it in his lyrics.

  • @TommYYZ omg its one of these guys, you know that Paul never died right? I've seen all of the evidence, I've read the books hell I own the book "The walrus was paul" Its all bullshit dude, I used to think that too, and again. Its all bullshit man. "Clues in lyrics, albums, videos, etc." its all bullshit dude, its like the lucy in the sky with diamonds thing, a lot of people still believe it mean LSD, which John got the idea from his sons picture. Paul never died. Its all bullshit dude.

  • IS THIS SONG ON AN ALBUM ? IF SO WHAT ALBUM ?

  • @jordanmylesevans Oh yes (The Beatles Anthology 1, Disc 1, Track 1, 1995) If you need this song just tell me and I'll send you, all right greeting for you.
