Great memories and wonderfully done miniseries with an incredible cast. Beautiful theme song. Can hear it over and over again. I have the old VHS tapes for the whole series of North and South. RIP Patrick Swayze.
I hadn't heard this theme since it was originally televised (I was 8 when the first premiered and 9 when the second aired) and yet I could still hear it in my mind. That's the sign of a powerful piece of music! Thanks for posting this!
Boże...jak ja KOCHAM tę muzykę !!!!!!!! Serial cudowny,a muzyka BAJECZNA !!! Tęsknie jak słyszę tę melodię... No i cudowny i niezapomniany Patrick Swayze ! SERIAL NUMER-1
To me one of the best themes to a mini series ever. If one just closes his/hers eyes and hear this music the images of a nation divided North and South comes to mind.
We miss you Patrick RIP. You were wonderful in this unforgettable mini-series. I watched it several times and find this theme beautiful. I saw this in 1985 the year I graduated high school. It brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for posting this. Kirstie Alley was fantastic as well. So was the rest of the cast. Mr Read who played Swayzes buddy and fellow cadet was fantastic too.
Yeah.. Fantastic theme that takes you back. Man, looking at the credits and seeing the cast and all those guest stars... UNBELIEVABLE!! I mean Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum, Johnny Cash!! Come on......!!!
That inspired totally. One of the best themes made ever. Remember when was small kid and tried play that on my little toy piano :)) Greet s from Poland
Bill Conti is awesome! Same one who composed the Rocky theme! I remember watchin North and South as a kid back in Germany in the 80's when it came out..
AWESOMENESS, I love this piece of work. I remember full well when this epic thundered to screen. This music for this is beautiful and the composer should be very proud
Great mini series, Great musical score but most of all....Totally fantastic when Justin get's what he's got coming to him because it is then and only then that the two people are who are truly meant for eachother wind up together. Then of course when "Bent" gets his it is the greatest conclusion to what is probably one of the coolest pieces of film from the 1980's and possibly a few other decades as well. This is one very long movie but written so that you love every minute!

This mini-series is the best....... I loved it when I saw it back in high school in '85.....and I just re=watched it with my 12-yr-old-daughter this weekend and she loved it.
Patrick Swayze you were incredible in this epic mini-series and may you rest in peace. Love this mini-series. They certainly don't make them like this anymore. Great ensemble cast as well and unmatched. Brilliant theme by Mr Bill Conti.
This was the most beautiful story of a tradgic time in our country...can you imagine fighting brother against brother, friend against friend. Much better than Gone With the Wind....the characters were casted perfectly. Does anyone know if there ever were words written for the theme of North and South....it sure would be a beautiful song.
I watched this in the 80's. In Bangladesh. One of the poorest 3rd world countries out there. That's how much we(Bangladesh) took to American culture. Very nostalgic for me and a lotta people I know. Aaaah....the 80's. Sniff.
i loved this mini series. i love this music. i think of it often. it is so awesome how one little thing can stay with you for so long. i am 33 now and i will never forget this music or the production. thank you for posting in.
I'm right with ya...perhaps we didn't realize it at the time, but lookin' back at it through the lens of all these 80's show clips, we sure do now...man how I miss those days..
I remember watching this when I was little and I kinda do think the theme was a bit slower but who cares.........It is truely a beautiful piece of music!!!
OMG....I LOVED this miniseries and the theme song(so perfect)!!!!! The song always reminds me of Orie and Madelyn and the way they struggled so much to be together.....their forbidden love was the best! Their chemistry, love and angst kept me riveted to the T.V. during the 80s. (Remember how MEAN and ugly Madelyn's husband was....looking her up in her room and drugging her.) Patrick Swayze was so gorgeous and sexy as Orie Main. It is so sad that he is gone :(
this music is so beautiful, it really compliments the series well. i was only a little kid when this series was broadcast on our screens in the 80's, but i have very fond memories of this show.
I love the drawing of of George and Ori standing shoulder to shoulder in the beginning, I Liked it so much that my best friend in the Army and I dressed up in Civil War Uniforms and we posed just like that. I have the pic hanging of us in my house and he does too. Best mini series ever.
I love this am in Ireland saw it as a child early 90's on Sky One loved it. When I was very ill last year my sister bought me book I&II on dvd watched it all in 3days no lie. For christmas one of my friends got me book III on dvd not a patch on the first 2 not as good. On Zone Romantica free digital channel mon-fri 5pm and repeated 8pm an episode of north and south a night :)
I have the first "book" dvd box and im getting the second and third any day now :) i know im 'late' but so far this is the best serie/mini-serie ever made.......its truly amasing...
My recommendation, forget the third one. It was taken in the 90s while the fiirst two where taken in the 80s. Lot of the story and timelines becomes inconsistent.
This is such a beautiful song and watched this first installment north and south book one in nineteen eighty five. I loved the large cast and learned so much about the north and south. I have the collection and watch at least once a year. The best mini series ever. Hands down.
ah... used to watch it as a kid back in the 80's. I think that's where I got my fascination for the good ole South (though I lived back then in one of the confederate states anyway...)
Too bad the South is remembered mostly for slavery and racism (while the North wasn't much better, at least when it came to treating "colored people").
few of my teamates were in the movie with both sides confederates and federals with there cannons and equipment. They didn't fight in the Mexican civil war scenes at all
I adore this series! I still watch it regularly on DVD.. I agree with what other people have said, it was one of those series you would never miss a single episode and sit all together to watch it.
I remember watching this when it aired, it was one of those last great American TV moments when everything else stopped. It was one of the last times the entire family gathered around the TV for anything as a group.

Beautiful song composed for a fantastic and incredible mini-series with great acting.

I adore this song. The mini-series and books are both brilliant.

The author Bill Conti is the same who made the music for Rocky ( watch?v=aJmr5CKY73M ).
However the best composer of movies' music keeps on being Ennio Morricone
