In 1965 she was giving a concert in Montreal at McGill University which was shown live on local television. It was this very show. This was one of her songs. She has many others, all of them terrific. One of the people in Montreal at that very time and watching that show was Ed Sullivans son-in-law who immediately told him to have her on ASAP. Petula Clark was already a star in England. Now she was to become one in North America.
Wow it's sad that everyone is hear because they heard this on a TV show :( Such a great song. Shame it took something like lost to make it known today.
@frznbxy Heh, thanks =), well actually the song recurs quite a lot throughout all seasons of lost. The song shows up in flashbacks every so often, its really hard to hear sometimes. :)
It's terrible that I'm sorely tempted to say, "They don't write songs like that anymore!" I can't be that old! :-) I was just two when this classic hit the charts in the UK. I've always loved it.
What I like best about this, besides Petula and her amazing song and voice, is that the audience is actually listening and enjoying the song. Nowadays the audience is be filled with arms holding camera's, video-phones, etc, and barely showing their appreciation to the artist. We're more concerned about preserving a pictoral memory, and having evidence to present to our "friends" so as to be seen as "cool" (you know what I mean), versus actually keeping a real/good memory.
Weren't 60's amazing? All those singers from back then could impress a public wearing decent costumes, long skirts are elegant dresses. Not to mention the great voices they had. :) (you should check out Marie Laforet - she's my soul!) Nowadays you can't make a successful career unless you show them some boobs, skin, butts and legs. Voices don't matter anyore. >.> It's sad.
LOL i listened to this in music class in 6th grade and now (lol) dis is like my fav song hahahaha and irk?! that guy in the back looks sooooooooo pumped about her lol jk
Good lord. The teenaged audiences have really changed over the past 50 years. Look at all those well-behaved kids in the audience sitting and clapping in unison. Can you picture the fucking teenagers today, yelling, screaming, jumping around, stabbing eachother, pushing and smoking meth? It's really sad.
@xDamianx0 i was replyiing to the wedding planner , as she talked about the well behaved kids at the petula clark concert in early60s. and said now a days thatkids are too wild. iwas suggesting to look back 10 years to 1955 when an elvis concert was juat as wild as a now a day. the joke to her was did you forget the 50s! i know everybody knows who elvis was! so use your brain ,idiot!
The guy at the front holding Petula's hand was the legendary Sky Saxon of The Seeds. He sticks out like a sore thumb among all the other clean cut kids there!
A couple of years ago, I heard this song for the first time in a department store on one of the oldie radio stations. When it started, I just stopped what I was doing and had to listen to it. Then, one of the sales clerks made an announcement over the PA system and I kept thinking, "Shut up so I can hear the rest of the song!". I heard most of it and I thought it was the greatest song I had ever heard. And it still is one of the best I've ever heard.
Petula had it many singers do not? Pet had the beat listen and watch her she counted her beat and just belted out this song > She was awesome we were amazed Who was this beauty that could sing like non before We were young boys going into puperty and we all fell in love with her and the song!!!
when you're alone and with telephone you can always go -online if you've got no hair and it's driving u to despair tap on those little squares and you'll feel so fine online read what some others write, life will seem much sweeter imagine them a nob jockey or a hairy lookin Peter you just choose forget what they say, forget what they do you can forget all yr troubles there's always trolls waitin for you orrrrnline orrrrnline..
GREAT TIMELESS SONG, this is from a time when people had REAL talent, and people wrote great songs, I am 26 years old and I think the 60's was the best time for music, I HATE MY GENERATIONS MUSIC, its boring and doesn't mean anything, one of my other favorite singers is Karen Carpenter, also from the 60's and 70's.
