It is astounding how that ethereal lost landscape of our parents' era of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl can be repainted in emotion through the genius of art. Something of the past we cannot leave behind, can we? It is that emotion which lingers to haunt and inspire us: emotion has the longest memory. Thank you, immortal Woody Guthrie.
This is the best version of this song in my opinion, Keith Whitley and Ralph Stanley do a good job to. The old house in the video I believe is Woody's home, where he was raised as a child. Woody's voice seems to fit this tune well.
@dirtynuke Yes, I ask myself the same question, again and again here forlorn in an unfriendly, cold and "settled in its ways" country with all my dearest ones far, so far away. Thanks Heaven we do have Woody and Friends to remind us that we are not that alone in this life and that even unknowingly, we can share
Woody went too soon! No Leadbelly image because he isn't there! Woody sings lead and plays the mandolin, Cisco (unusually) the bass harmony and guitar, Sonny the harmonica and I think the female harmony is Bess Lomax Hawes.
Great video! This is a Carter Family song, by the way. Woody was a huge Carter Family fan, and used tunes from Carter songs for many of his own compositions. The Carters dug Woody's music, too, and they exchanged letters when Woody was on the radio.
You've really got to hear the version of this song on the "My Dusty Road," the new Guthrie boxed set. It's obviously the same take, but it's way clearer and more powerful: they freakin' discovered the original masters. It sounds like Woody, Cisco, Leadbelly, et all are sitting right in front of you!
Thank you so much. Woody did domany great songs, but this one always moves me, time and time again. I heard it years ago, on a cassette tape from the Smithsonian archives, and never imagined anyone would bother to put it online; I am glad someone did.
