  • incredible dude

  • Kicks ass

  • Your right hand is so relaxed. Impressed.

  • Regular six string tuning?

  • How do you get that growling tone? You know what I mean.

  • @martin10921 You spend $3000+ on a custom bass.

  • awesome playing

  • awesome playing

  • wonderfull

     8:19

  • that is such a beautiful bass with an amazing tone...

  • why is dream theater so good?

  • @heavensfury2121 because they are aliens

  • @heavensfury2121 Because the three founding members went to Berklee, the keyboardist went to Juilliard and the frontman is a former opera singer XD

  • Any idea what brand pick ups?

  • @TheLordFenris - They custom wound Aero pickups (switcheable single/dual coil)

  • are those thomastic strings ? and if they are do you recommend them?

  • @BoboSab3121 - Yes, and yes! Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Rounds. They're my favorite strings by far.

  • i love this bass. I want to buy.. I`ll want to find Chris Stambaugh. How much this bass and wich country ? Wats brand of pickups ? trees ? Ative or passive pickup ? Whats brand of strings ?

  • @MrGoktugerol - Check out his website. This bass has Aero pickups (active, switcheable single/dual coil), Aguilar preamp. Black limba body (semi-hollow), claro walnut top and back. Hard ash / walnut neck. Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Round strings.

  • Good bassist!

  • Would you swap your bass for a cool t shirt? Might have a hole in it, might not. Depends on the condition of the bass =D lol

  • Very nice job. What amp do you use?

  • this is the reason why my next baby is going to be a 6 stringed beast!

  • Hey dude do you perhaps got any tips or techniques on how to switch from 4 to 5 string?

i mean i know i can do some Dream theater songs and stuff and that i could take shortcuts for some songs. But if there are tips or scales on how to understand that 5th string better i would appreciate to know it.

  • @Guyverhoeven

The 5th string is very simple thing

It is just a low B, you can play any scale by taking advantage of the B string, you just get lower octaves and fatter tone.

  • @Guyverhoeven Just do it! That´s what i did ;)

You will get used to the low B string in a week or so

  • You played the wrong line of music you would have to accompany the guitar in the introduction. But, legally sound, congratulations.

  • it's Fodera?

  • @alancelso10 - No, it was made by Chris Stambaugh.

  • where are the 15 other minutes of this song!

    good job

  • I don't normally cuss, I like pure responsible language.. But that fuckin kicks ass man.. Nice work..

  • The man plays bass..

  • How come you sold this bass? You don't like 6-strings?

  • @nikklazz - Nothing against 6-strings, I just ended up playing my Ken Lawrence more.

  • @GBagley Ok. I just thought that you are a guy that plays pretty busily and maybe prefer a wider range of tones. I have ordered a 6-string bass for myself and I feel really excited about getting used to it and learn to play it well.

  • FUcking sick

  • I love how dark 6 string basses sound \m/

  • That bass is beautiful dude. How much did that put you back?

  • Beatifull Bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Coollllllllllllllllllllllllll.

  • metronom!!!

  • Myung really makes stories on his instrument

  • OMG dude your bass is beautiful, and the sound is amazing

  • About the finish of this monster, is it TUNG OIL???

  • @abshmusic - I don't know exactly, but it was an hand-rubbed oil finish of some kind (as opposed to a hard finish).

  • Hey Greg! Please tell to the actual owner of this bass:

EVERYBODY ON YOUTUBE IS WAITING NEW VIDS :)

  • This bass just looks like you man! I'm soooo sad because you said you sold it. THANK YOU SO MUCH for being my inspiration. Who's the actual owner of it? Is there new vids???

  • Thanks for watching! Someone in California owns this one now (same guy I sold it to). No new videos as far as I know. Though I still have a bunch of archived videos with it that I might upload sometime. I put up another Dream Theater one a couple months ago. Stream of Consciousness, check it out :)

  • Awesome!

  • I crapped my pants the second this video started...nice playing, nice bass, nice pants. Quit your dayjob :D

  • Awesome bass tone! Nice playing too mate

  • whats the bass in the background

  • There's a DeArmond Pilot Deluxe on the couch, and a 1966 Guild Starfire standing up against the couch.

  • You would be able to tell if it was fretless from the sound.

  • no its not fretless ?

    look on the video ^^

  • some fretless basses do have fret stickers where the frets would be. It doesnt sound like one though.

  • really ?

    ok sry ^^

i never saw one like this before ...

    I'm 17 so ....... but now i here the difference, thanks :P

  • the best question I've seen in a long time, I'm really sorry to be joking if you're actually blind

  • yeah, i guesss that was a really retarded question to ask. i was just wondering.. the only fretless basses ive ever played had fret markers. but i should have been able to tell by sound. not exactly my moment of wisdom :P still... great cover of a great song.

  • Are you blind\deaf?

  • amazing solo and playing man your amazing

  • jeez man i dont even know how to utilize the top string on a 5 string bass let alone a 6 string, all those diff tunings, maybee i should stick with my 4 for a bit..

  • on a 5 string the tuning is the same just has the extra low B string, on a 6 string u get an extra sting on the bottom, the high C. so ur 4 string is EADG, the 5 sting is BEADG, and the 6 is BEADGC. and its really not that hard going from 4 to 5. u can just ignore that extra string and kinda casually try to mix it in your playing. ive never got up to the 6 string though, not enough money :)

  • that is one beatuiful bass

  • awesome dude! :D i wish that you were my bands bass player :P

  • awesome bass, awesome playing. i have absolutely no advice. i see that you don't have the problem that most other guitar/bass players have which is keeping the fingers close to the fretboard. usually their fingers go flying everywhere but yours stay close to the frets. very nice technique. just...keep practicing lol

  • @ironwolg So it is improper technique to have your fingers flying all over the fretboard? Ah I do that a lot! John Myung also seems to do it a lot too.

  • i'm not sure if it's considered improper, but it does slow you down a bit. keeping your fingers closer to the fretboard makes it easier for them to get where they need to be quickly because they don't have as far to travel

  • why dont you do more DT songs ? it would be awesome

  • It's written on a 6 string. It's meant to be played on a 6 string. If he played it on a 4 string than it wouldn't sound right. Go away.

  • lets see you play like him. then you may not be looked at as such a douchebag. ignorant people like you amuse me

  • btw you have an awesome right hand technique... Left hand's confusing to watch because sometimes it looks like you're cramping together, and other times you're using the pinky and extending across the board :P very hard to make a constructive criticism comment about.

I was actually only going to comment about the right hand but then I felt I had to comment about the left... anyways...

You're a great player. Keep it up!

  • Dude I love the bass.... I saw "Dream Theater a Change of Seasons on bass" than saw the bass and went....

"ooooooooh. That's a nice looking bass. Gotta watch" :P

You like 6 strings? I love the tone that comes out of them.

    Got any others?

  • Nice sound!!

  • Absolutly amazing ! 5 stars.

  • Your tone is amazing.

  • A good bass is nothing without a good bassist ;)

  • fortunately both are present here

  • agreed. Whats music with feeling and soul? sounds. thats it.

  • here it comes the new john myung ! wow congratulations man ! from a french guitar player who loves dream theater much than everything

  • beautiful bass my friend

  • Beautiful tone man! Bravo!

  • what a fucking great bass!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great playing and beautiful tone. Keep it up.

  • awesome... i have no words

  • bonito bajo loko :)

  • Man you are amazing. That basses sound is amazing. I wish i was that good. But frankly my skills suck. This video inspired me to go pick up my bass and try to play again Thanks rated and subscribed :)

  • mi piace molto!

  • That is a beautiful bass.

  • how do you get your b string so tight!?!

  • bravo!

  • Really nice cover dude, your solos are awesomes! Congratz!

  • Comment removed

  • It's not ' what is easier', but ' what is better' :)

  • uhh guitar is easier than a 6 string bass. u have to stretch ur fingers like crazy to play a 6 string. and the tunings are different.

  • yeah tuning for a 6 string bass is B-E-A-D-G-C

  • a guitar is a guitar and a 6 string bass is another thing. On the guitar you usually play extended chords, on bass no. This bass is thinked for playing stuff like tapping, comping and more hybrid technics. On the other hand, the tunning is easier in the bass guitar than in the guitar, because between a high string and a low one there is always a 5th, in the guitar this change in the 2nd B. That's the reason because is much easier to memorize patterns in a 6 string bass.

  • Great playing and beautiful tone too.

  • that'a a Cort Curbow, right? :) great work man!

  • Yep. I bet you cheated by looking at his video description though. No cookies for you.

  • no its Stambaugh Custom 6-string bass.

  • Nope and nope (and yep). It's a custom made Stambaugh bass. Curbows have a simmilar fingerboard sweep at the heel end of the neck, but that's pretty much all they have in common.

  • awesome cover

  • Great bass :D

  • great job man.. congratulation :D

  • damn that is probobly one of the sickest basses Ive ever seen.

  • haha reading that do re mi fa sol la ti do thing reminded me of something i learned in history class one time, that the modes of scales are named after Greek cities, i.e: Ionian mode, named after Ionia, Dorian mode, named after Doria, Lydian/Mixolydian mode, named after Lydia, etc.

  • awesome job!!

  • sorry: awesome. 5+ one more time. ;)

  • great job, dude. it's really sounds awsome. 5+

  • very nice job and fuckin great thick sound.

    is it regular si-mi-la-re-sol-si?

  • Thanks. I've never used solfege to express tuning like that, but even so, I can't make out any kind of standard tuning from what you've got there. This bass is tuned BEADGC

  • Yeah it's mainly because in europe we usually learn the notes with their italian names, so it was just my mistake using these names on you tube.

So your tuning is si-mi-la-re-sol-do (BEADGC). I just thought that 6string basses had a higher si (B) and not a do (C). I've never played a 6string that's why I didn't know its standard tuning.

By the way, don't you americans mess with the italian names at all in your musical studies?

  • Oh. I didn't know that there were different Italian note names. It sounds like you use a different version of what we call 'Solfege'? So for us, CDEFGABC would be 'do re mi fa sol la ti do'.

  • In Italian (generally southern & eastern europe) the notes are Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si, rather than C-D-E-F-G-A-B.

These names were given by an italian guy whose name I don't remember round the 11th century.

These note names are from the first syllables of a latin church song or something, and were firstly Ut-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La.

Si was added later and Ut chaged to Do but I don't know why.

So where I am from we learn the notes this way in our musical studies and always refer to them like that.

  • Solfege now, I think was developed by this same Italian guy when he was trying to teach some monks how to sight-read or sight-sing or simply sing or something like that.

To tell you the truth I don't know where the names C-D-E-F-G-A-B come from, I mean historicaly.

I don't mean to say that the names we use are older and that we should use this name system. I just don't happen to know where yours come from.

  • my music theory instructor went over the italian names for the tunings but never really made me learn them and memorize them

  • all 6 strings bass are tuned basic BEADGC... it isn't a guitar that's got B after G... :-)

  • Really good job, sounds nice and tight. Solo is good too, but doesn't seem to fit with the mood of the song.

  • this bass sounds BADASS!!!! awsome vid, love it! 5/5

  • I like your bass very much. The Tone is thick and warm, and very smooth. I can't get enough of that percussive sound that your right hand makes from hitting the strings (particularly on the low B string). I've noticed John Myung gets that same sound as well, and I've always loved it, haha. I enjoy watching your videos, keep up the great work.

  • Ohh, I am also curious... how much did this particular bass cost? After seeing many videos of Stambaughs, I am considering looking into obtaining one myself. Thanks for the help!

  • Check out Chris Stambaugh's website for pricing info. Very, very reasonable prices!

  • looks heavy

  • What bass is that? Looks so very fucking cool, sir O_O

  • It was custom made by Chris Stambaugh.

  • very great

  • I think at 1:30 you play the slides on a higher string.

  • nice job and improv on the solo man

  • Good bass and good play~ :>

  • nice playing

  • Nice, your bass's so cool, wide fretboard :) I've got an instrumental composition called a change of season too, but it has nothing to do with dream theater, you can check it out on my youtube :)

  • YOu sound killer!

  • i love your sound man! how do i set mine? I have a line 6 low down 150 and a B.C. Rich warlock

  • Can't help you there. Tone comes more from the gear and playing style you have than any EQ settings.

  • dude youre awesome i wanna hear someone like you playing alive! should be cool nice job...

  • I must be listening to all the wrong songs of Dream Theater!

COuld you suggest some of their better songs for bass other than this one which I will now learn.

I love 6-string too...just not enough Metal influence out there for it yet...This is some of the best.

  • dance of eternity is pretty good.

erotomania, metropolis part 1 , 6:00 just to name a few...

  • dark eternal night. if you like dream theaters style of bass, check out cliff Burtons solos. Also check out Geddy lee from rush(not exactly same style, but Burton and Myung were both heavily influenced by Geddy)

  • I, too, love the B string on that axe-lots of presence!

  • very nice!! But you forget to play at 1:11 and so on..until 1:28

    ;)

  • v tight B string love.

  • nice!

  • Great job mate! I loved it!

  • HOLY ..!

    what a bass!

  • very nice improvisation on the solo. ;)

  • Your bass is a bolt on isn't it? Love the playing dude, your technique is awesome . . .

  • Yes, it is a bolt-on. Thanks :)

  • man nice solos your arpeggios and technique remimd me of Wooten's playing. Btw thats like 1 tone below standard tune right?

  • Nope, standard tuning. BEADGC

  • thats awesome dude :D

  • sweat sounding bass!

  • ahhh dude dream theater is amazing!

    nice cover.

  • man it's bass players like you, that make bass players like me, look absolutely hedious at playing bass. you are an inspiration to all of us

  • do u have a band man¿? i want to hear some of ur own songs... they must be fucking awesome!

    sorry... my english sux :P

  • lol...everybody understood what u were trying to say so...I think ur english was fine, at least now...xD

  • I don't have any kind of full time band. Just various freelance projects here and there. I have a couple of my own songs on youtube though. 'Dream Within a Dream' and 'Flight of Neptune'

  • Man i'v seen you in all those videos each time with diferent SUPER expensive Basses, where you get them, its your job related to this ?

  • My job isn't related to this (I don't work in a music store or anything like that). I don't have that many 'super' expensive basses either. Don't have this bass anymore. My main electric (Ken Lawrence) was about 3-grand. All my other basses were well under 2-grand. I get them from various places and people.

  • Technically 97% from me (comparing to original). Sound 110% :D (Myoung's bass has much less definition)

  • Just for the intro

    5/5

  • damn nice, such precise playing

  • wow _O_

  • i really like the bass what model is that? very nice job as swell

  • read the tags ;)

  • Nice stuff. What setting do you have for the tone?

  • I usually keep all my settings flat.

  • Please tell me that the melody you played at the very beginning is not improvisation. I can't imagine something so beautiful being spontaneous...

  • It was improvised...wasn't anything special though, to me :P

  • Then you're just so good that your improvisations sound great. I'm jealous

  • AWESOOOOME¡¡ post more metal solos please¡

  • How Much Better Can U Get?(DAMN!)

  • There's always plenty of room for improvement!

  • nice job man! can you play metropolis bass?
