@marquessse you aren't right. Example? I live on Nowowiejska Street (in Wrocław, of course)- it took its name from german village called Polnische Neudorf, which means "Polish New Village". It is people from Wroclaw - who came there because they were moved from Lwow (currently Lviv in Ukraine) and other territories of pre - WWII polish territories in the east.
That's your opinion now I'll tell u the facts . In 1970 Chancellor Willy Brandt at his trip to Warsaw had recognized PL west boarder in the name of free West Germany. In 17 VI 1991 after german reunion a threaty of " goog neighbourhood, friendship and cooperation" was sighned between free independent Germany and Republic of Poland and it was approved by both Bundestag and Polish Parmanent. It had recognized polish west boarder once again so in law aspects everything was set long time ago
it seems like you studied your history books very well to protect something you call your own identity. but there is no own identity when there are no own roots. to give a city another name and proclaime the people who live there as patriots makes no different. I also like Cicero and his quotes but Wyjątek potwierdza regułę. Nevertheless Thank you for being so honest.
Sometimes Cities have diffeerent names according to many languages Wrocław,Breslau,Broszlo. For us it was always Wrocław since it had belonged to polish Kingdoom under Piast dynasty before it divided itselves on few autonomic dutcheries in 1138 u can see it on medievil maps. As for Identity u can be sure 65 years and over 3 generations is enough to plant roots so people could say this is our "Heimat".If u have objections just visit Wrocław and ask it's citizens about it
"Heimat" ... With all due respect to your opinion. It is the tragic role of Polish people in history. Some people would say "Czas leczy wszystkie rany" but it's not true. We will never forget our roots there. We will never betray our ancestors. When I see how Polish people think about the Expulsion of Germans after World War II... how self-righteous. Instead of fighting for reconnecting your lost territories in the east. Ex iniuria ius non oritur. Dum spiro spero. In honorem Borussia.
With all due respect to your opinion. It's the tragic role of German ppl lured by Nazi ideoligy in 1939-41 when they had attacked all their east west and north neighbours stealing lands breaking each norm of international law by then etc. Finally at the end of this madness they spread due to their actions Yalta&Potsdam conference took place where 3 supreme world powers decided on fate about german east provinces and it's citizens. All this stuff was consequences of your actions not Poles
U r wrong polish govermant on exile wit PM Mikołajczyk and his succesors were fighting for pre-war boarders till the bitter end but we had no voice about it and finally we had to ackwnoledge decissions of Potsdam and Yalta just like u. Germans ppl feel anger now but apparently they have amnesia since they don't remember when they were expelling Poles from their west lands in 1939 just like germans were in 1946 and the fact 6 mlo Poles died during german occupation this is called double morality
Noone comand u to betray your ancestories u can worship and honour memory about them forever but stay away from west poland cause we are already attached to this lands and we are ready even to die for it if we must.I read a book of german historian Gregor Thum original title"Die Fremde Stadt.Breslau 1945" in epilogue he says that after 1945 poles put new life in Breslau and today it's a great polish metropoly, great center of polish culture a city no less polish than Warsaw or Cracow u can check
Today there is no country and no govermant in the world including Germany who dare to undermine lawfulness of polish west boarder so u can choose either to ackwnoledge simple facts ( In fact u already did it just like I said) or we are gonna to have World War III there is no other way but this is your problem not ours. And if u choose first option u should once and for all stop blaming poles for your WWII consequences and willing to see nothing beside your victims your expulsions your losts
Whether other countries, other governments or even our own don't dare to undermine lawfulness of polish west borders or not I don't mind. Todays Germans are truly not responsible for the cruel crimes of the NAZI regime. As well as you are not responsible that you now live on our ground! Nevertheless I know we are both right. So there will be no logical solution for this problem. I really don't blame Poland.
But I also know that Hitler before he established tatalitarism and dictatorship in Germany, he came to power and gained chancellor chair by democratic ellections in XI 1932 when NSDAP gathered biggest support in german society. Earlier he had a big chance to became a german president in III 1932 when about 14 mlo germans voted on him. So noone can deny that Nazi ideology and hitler's revisionism was very popular amongst germ society. Of course not all germ were Nazis but huge part of them was
When we put it that way decisions of Yalta and Potsdam conferrence was quite close to justice since after V 1945 most ppl in Europe by then wanted German state to be punished for it's arrogant and aggresive attitude. Question is what is German state? It's german citizens and they must had bare the costs for their gov actions it's sad but avoiding collective guilt was impossible in this case.Stalin&Roosvelt were thinking about themselves on 1st place but they also did what entire europe expected
But as you said you would die for it... me too. If I was an stupid neonazi I would curse you to hell! But I don't. Think of somebody who's ancestors were ruled by a cruel government once. His ancestors had no choice. They lost everything they had including their homeland, their identity. They were droven out their land. they had been beaten and raped just for living there, on a ground which another one decided to annex.
This was no justice. We just lost this wonderfull land because of the hegemonial claims of totalitarian russian regime. No of these Yalta and Potsdam conference guys thoy thought of justice. Justice for Poland - out of the question. So please refer to such fuckin spectacles of history. This was no justice. In justice is all virtues found in sum. Justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical. It is the spirit and not the form of law that keeps justice alive.
Even during war while german war machine was winning Nazis had a great support in their own ppl that's why moral responsibility for WWII lays on german ppl imo. I'm not a God or at leas philosopher and I don't know what exactly Justice is or does it even exist. My guess it's something like average of wishes of all ppl.I also believe that when somebody do any harm to anybody no matter if agressor is strong or weak reach or poor sooner or later this act will turn against the agressor
Of course u have right to your own vision of Justice but like I've said u r not the only one ppl living in europe. We raised this city from ashes of Festung Breslau we recondstructed city center and gave new life here. It used to belong to your ppl I respect this heritage but now it's my city and my country. U can claim it's still yours I don't mind as long as polish flag waves in front of city councill. We didn't take it away from u but U've lost it
Yes I feel sorry for tragic story of german ppl expelled form Breslau who had suffered in consequence of their own govermant actions.I feel more sorry for polish people died in gas chambers or burned in flames of Auschwitz Chełmno, Treblinka, Majdanek and other death camps established by natives of thouse germans in Poland.Thouse victims also had no choice and lost even more
One more U've mentioned something about fear. Do you suggest something? For now absolutley nothing indicates any danger for us so I don't see any reason to fear but don't worry we don't fear anyone exept God just like ancient romans were saying "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori"
... and every of those patriotic Poles should be able to understand the Germans attitude! To call a spade a spade in my opinion Polish people have their heart in the right place. I also understand your view of this matter.
But we will never betray our Silesia because this is what our ancestors who had been droven out of their homeland would expect from us!!! Patriots of all people should be understanding of that.
How about u Germans try to understand others u are not the only person who suffered and lost homeland becouse of stupid war you 've started Poland lost much more lands on east becouse of your bloody war entire central europe was kept in soviet captivity u don't wish to remember it? You like latin so u should know "Historiam nescire hoc est semper puerum esse" when u demant someone to be understanding u should understand oters first. And today Wrocław ids polish in each aspects
Why so? Wroclaw (Breslau) has been in Poland for many years, and it's full of patriotic Poles. Why do you think that we should give it back to Germany?
Let me remind you that Wrocław alongside with Silesia, Pommerania East Prussia was given to Poland after international conference in Potsdam after WWII so there was no "annexation" and recent polish west boarder was recognized by german govermant twice in 1970 and after reunion in 1990. If you talk about violation of international law you should rather check more about german aggression on Poland and other souverign european states in 1939-41.
Sorry Sensymilla, this wasn't meant to be a provocation. I just feel sorry that there is just a very small number of Germans in today's Wroclaw. The Germans contributed by far the biggest part to the beauty of Breslau. And I am ashamed that the allies (including my country) didn't try to stop the Soviets from expelling them.
Sensymilla, a city is an organism which doesn't consist just of houses, roads, squares and bridges. People are the brain and the blood of this organism. By the expulsion of the Germans the Soviets decapitated Breslau and shed its blood. Just imagine that in your beautiful hometown all Poles were replaced by Turks? Would it still be Kraków?
Wroclaw was an organism long before German came there. The city was est. and built by Poles and Czechs, which you can see f.e. in Ostrow Tumski, the oldest part. There are still marks of Wroclaw's origin for some reason saved by this time "newbies". After Germans came, they devastated Slavic structures and built their own. That's the same "soul losing" as this what happened after the ww2, with the difference, that this time Poles didn't devastated German marks.
Not completely true, Sensymilla. Wroclaw was devastated in 1241 during the Mongol invasion. The inhabitants burned down their own city to force the Mongols to a quick withdrawal. Like many Polish cities of that age the city was expanded by adopting a German town law. A new center of the town was created around Rynek. The new and rebuilt town adopted Magdeburg rights in 1262 and shortly after joined the Hanseatic league.
Despite the control of the region by the Polish Piast dynasty the city enjoyed self-administration. But however, as I said Breslau's 700 year old soul was destroyed forever by the Soviets 70 yrs ago.
Sensymilla, you said "Poles didn't devastate German marks". That's totally wrong. Have you ever heard of "odniemczanie" and "polonizacja"? This degermanisation and polonisation of Breslau included f.e. the destruction of German monuments, the overpainting of German inscriptions and symbols on houses, churches and schools but also the complete evaporation of the historic German street names...
...not to mention the falsification of history by telling the city's new Polish inhabitants that the expulsion of the Germans was a necessary act for the recovery of old Polish soil. For me it is a shame that there was no protest from my country against this acts of inhumanity.
Germans wasn't expelled because of land recovery. They main reason of expulsion, was that they were announced as Polish enemy. Sure it was an evil crime, especially from the perspective of 2008. But back then it was I guess hard to accept that some of them happen to be innocent. War in Poland was not the same as war in France, here was a real hell. It made people very easy to turn against Germans.
"odniemczanie" you mean rebuilding 70% destroyed Wroclaw to match it's original German architecture, you call polonization? bringing back the streets, squares, buildings alive again, you call odniemczanie? Sure those structures that survived the war were polonized, but isn't that logic result what happened? The same was in Lviv which became Ukrainian. But I don't blame Ukrainians that they renamed Polish structures there. Why wouldn't they? the city became theirs.
oh, I love when people are quoting wikipedia. The southern part of the city was indeed burned after Mongols, but what remainded was replaced by newcomers. Which is normal, every city or village is comming through rebuilding, reshaping throughout history, that's natural. But calling Wroclaw only a German city is an exagerration, especially after the war, when 70% city was destroyed, and rebuilt by Poles.
Have you ever been to Wroclaw anyway? In the center of Wroclaw, atmosphere is just amazing. I can't compare people from both cities, but what kind of arhitecture is there in Krakow, besides the Wawel and city center? Besides, nice girls are everywhere in Poland :] And finally, Krakow is very polluted.
Przepraszam wynikla pomylka.Moj komentarz tyczy sie wypowiedzi andrewcobra2000, jakoby wroclaw nie odniosl zniszczen wojennych> fakty sa takie iz dzielnice zachodnie i południowe zostaly zniszczone w 90 %, Stare Miasto i Środmiescie w 50%, dzielnice połnocne w 30% i wschodnie w 10%. z 30 000 budynkow znajdujjacych sie w spisach miejskich, zniszczonych zostalo 21 600 budynkow.
Jasne :-) Wroclaw swoje jednak przezyl. Wiele cennych zabytkow i zbiorow ucierpialo, czesc bezpowrotnie zostala stracona.
Proszę o pisanie komentarzy z szacunkiem do innych.
Boże, jak przecytalem Twoje "wypociny ulomnego wiesniaczka" to mi sie plakac ze smiechu zachciało. Jesli dla ciebie porownac Wroclaw do Krakowa to jakiegos rodzaju debilizm, to musisz byc slepy albo totalnie tępy. Chyba raczej to drugie, bo inaczej nie napisalbys "porownywaj". PS.
Why this song??? Wroclaw is a non-violent beautiful place, Eventhough one has to know where to look beside the obvious spots.. A song by Cantoma: "Pandajero" would have been better here
Cheers,
Wroclaw keeps it real, go and check 4 yourself :)

... in my oppinion Polish west borders were recognized by a German marionette government of the occupying forces! There was never a referendum.
escotteins 3 years ago
That's your opinion now I'll tell u the facts . In 1970 Chancellor Willy Brandt at his trip to Warsaw had recognized PL west boarder in the name of free West Germany. In 17 VI 1991 after german reunion a threaty of " goog neighbourhood, friendship and cooperation" was sighned between free independent Germany and Republic of Poland and it was approved by both Bundestag and Polish Parmanent. It had recognized polish west boarder once again so in law aspects everything was set long time ago
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
By law aspects you are certainly right but by moral aspects Silesia and Breslau are German forever.
TurkmanMuzel 3 years ago
it seems like you studied your history books very well to protect something you call your own identity. but there is no own identity when there are no own roots. to give a city another name and proclaime the people who live there as patriots makes no different.

As for Identity u can be sure 65 years and over 3 generations is enough to plant roots so people could say this is our "Heimat".If u have objections just visit Wrocław and ask it's citizens about it
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
"Heimat" ... With all due respect to your opinion. It is the tragic role of Polish people in history. Some people would say "Czas leczy wszystkie rany" but it's not true. We will never forget our roots there. We will never betray our ancestors. When I see how Polish people think about the Expulsion of Germans after World War II... how self-righteous. Instead of fighting for reconnecting your lost territories in the east. Ex iniuria ius non oritur. Dum spiro spero. In honorem Borussia.
escotteins 3 years ago
With all due respect to your opinion. It's the tragic role of German ppl lured by Nazi ideoligy in 1939-41 when they had attacked all their east west and north neighbours stealing lands breaking each norm of international law by then etc. Finally at the end of this madness they spread due to their actions Yalta&Potsdam conference took place where 3 supreme world powers decided on fate about german east provinces and it's citizens. All this stuff was consequences of your actions not Poles
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
U r wrong polish govermant on exile wit PM Mikołajczyk and his succesors were fighting for pre-war boarders till the bitter end but we had no voice about it and finally we had to ackwnoledge decissions of Potsdam and Yalta just like u. Germans ppl feel anger now but apparently they have amnesia since they don't remember when they were expelling Poles from their west lands in 1939 just like germans were in 1946 and the fact 6 mlo Poles died during german occupation this is called double morality
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
Noone comand u to betray your ancestories u can worship and honour memory about them forever but stay away from west poland cause we are already attached to this lands and we are ready even to die for it if we must.I read a book of german historian Gregor Thum original title"Die Fremde Stadt.Breslau 1945" in epilogue he says that after 1945 poles put new life in Breslau and today it's a great polish metropoly, great center of polish culture a city no less polish than Warsaw or Cracow u can check
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
Today there is no country and no govermant in the world including Germany who dare to undermine lawfulness of polish west boarder so u can choose either to ackwnoledge simple facts ( In fact u already did it just like I said) or we are gonna to have World War III there is no other way but this is your problem not ours. And if u choose first option u should once and for all stop blaming poles for your WWII consequences and willing to see nothing beside your victims your expulsions your losts
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
Whether other countries, other governments or even our own don't dare to undermine lawfulness of polish west borders or not I don't mind. Todays Germans are truly not responsible for the cruel crimes of the NAZI regime. As well as you are not responsible that you now live on our ground! Nevertheless I know we are both right. So there will be no logical solution for this problem. I really don't blame Poland.
escotteins 3 years ago
But I also know that Hitler before he established tatalitarism and dictatorship in Germany, he came to power and gained chancellor chair by democratic ellections in XI 1932 when NSDAP gathered biggest support in german society. Earlier he had a big chance to became a german president in III 1932 when about 14 mlo germans voted on him. So noone can deny that Nazi ideology and hitler's revisionism was very popular amongst germ society. Of course not all germ were Nazis but huge part of them was
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
When we put it that way decisions of Yalta and Potsdam conferrence was quite close to justice since after V 1945 most ppl in Europe by then wanted German state to be punished for it's arrogant and aggresive attitude. Question is what is German state? It's german citizens and they must had bare the costs for their gov actions it's sad but avoiding collective guilt was impossible in this case.Stalin&Roosvelt were thinking about themselves on 1st place but they also did what entire europe expected
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
But as you said you would die for it... me too. If I was an stupid neonazi I would curse you to hell! But I don't. Think of somebody who's ancestors were ruled by a cruel government once. His ancestors had no choice. They lost everything they had including their homeland, their identity. They were droven out their land. they had been beaten and raped just for living there, on a ground which another one decided to annex.
escotteins 3 years ago
This was no justice. We just lost this wonderfull land because of the hegemonial claims of totalitarian russian regime. No of these Yalta and Potsdam conference guys thoy thought of justice. Justice for Poland - out of the question. So please refer to such fuckin spectacles of history. This was no justice. In justice is all virtues found in sum. Justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical. It is the spirit and not the form of law that keeps justice alive.
escotteins 3 years ago
Even during war while german war machine was winning Nazis had a great support in their own ppl that's why moral responsibility for WWII lays on german ppl imo. I'm not a God or at leas philosopher and I don't know what exactly Justice is or does it even exist. My guess it's something like average of wishes of all ppl.I also believe that when somebody do any harm to anybody no matter if agressor is strong or weak reach or poor sooner or later this act will turn against the agressor
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
Of course u have right to your own vision of Justice but like I've said u r not the only one ppl living in europe. We raised this city from ashes of Festung Breslau we recondstructed city center and gave new life here. It used to belong to your ppl I respect this heritage but now it's my city and my country. U can claim it's still yours I don't mind as long as polish flag waves in front of city councill. We didn't take it away from u but U've lost it
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
Yes I feel sorry for tragic story of german ppl expelled form Breslau who had suffered in consequence of their own govermant actions.I feel more sorry for polish people died in gas chambers or burned in flames of Auschwitz Chełmno, Treblinka, Majdanek and other death camps established by natives of thouse germans in Poland.Thouse victims also had no choice and lost even more
Hetmannnn 3 years ago
We will fight for our justice, for our ancestors homeland we lost, and you should so too! Fear is the mother of morality.
escotteins 3 years ago
One more U've mentioned something about fear. Do you suggest something? For now absolutley nothing indicates any danger for us so I don't see any reason to fear but don't worry we don't fear anyone exept God just like ancient romans were saying "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori"

... and every of those patriotic Poles should be able to understand the Germans attitude! To call a spade a spade in my opinion Polish people have their heart in the right place. I also understand your view of this matter.
But we will never betray our Silesia because this is what our ancestors who had been droven out of their homeland would expect from us!!! Patriots of all people should be understanding of that.
escotteins 3 years ago
How about u Germans try to understand others u are not the only person who suffered and lost homeland becouse of stupid war you 've started Poland lost much more lands on east becouse of your bloody war entire central europe was kept in soviet captivity u don't wish to remember it? You like latin so u should know "Historiam nescire hoc est semper puerum esse" when u demant someone to be understanding u should understand oters first. And today Wrocław ids polish in each aspects

It is time for Breslau now to be given back to Germany again.
TurkmanMuzel 3 years ago
Why so? Wroclaw (Breslau) has been in Poland for many years, and it's full of patriotic Poles. Why do you think that we should give it back to Germany?
TomAsz451 3 years ago
No problem for Poles to live in Wroclaw furthermore. But Breslau genuinely belongs to Germany by geographical and cultural reasons.
TurkmanMuzel 3 years ago
What geographical and cultural reasons?
TomAsz451 3 years ago
Germany and its Soviet allies invaded Poland intending to re-occupy it and divide it again.
They lost and Poland gained territory in the west while losing it in the east.
To put it another way, Poland now occupies once again the territory that was Polish a thousand years ago.
Niech zyje Polska.

Breslau. Not Wroclaw. Annexation is illegal undter international law!
escotteins 3 years ago
Let me remind you that Wrocław alongside with Silesia, Pommerania East Prussia was given to Poland after international conference in Potsdam after WWII so there was no "annexation" and recent polish west boarder was recognized by german govermant twice in 1970 and after reunion in 1990. If you talk about violation of international law you should rather check more about german aggression on Poland and other souverign european states in 1939-41.

parisienne72 - why are you provoking?
"Unfortunately Wroclaw has lost it's soul since the expulsion of the Germans. "
is it mean - you are so old, that you visited Wroclaw when Germans occupied it, so you know how was it there then?
Or you just want to be a bitch, and want to upset people who just want to enjoy this movie?
Sensymilla 3 years ago
Sorry Sensymilla, this wasn't meant to be a provocation. I just feel sorry that there is just a very small number of Germans in today's Wroclaw. The Germans contributed by far the biggest part to the beauty of Breslau. And I am ashamed that the allies (including my country) didn't try to stop the Soviets from expelling them.
parisienne72 3 years ago
Sensymilla, a city is an organism which doesn't consist just of houses, roads, squares and bridges. People are the brain and the blood of this organism. By the expulsion of the Germans the Soviets decapitated Breslau and shed its blood. Just imagine that in your beautiful hometown all Poles were replaced by Turks? Would it still be Kraków?
parisienne72 3 years ago
Wroclaw was an organism long before German came there. The city was est. and built by Poles and Czechs, which you can see f.e. in Ostrow Tumski, the oldest part. There are still marks of Wroclaw's origin for some reason saved by this time "newbies". After Germans came, they devastated Slavic structures and built their own. That's the same "soul losing" as this what happened after the ww2, with the difference, that this time Poles didn't devastated German marks.
The history made it's wheel...
Sensymilla 3 years ago
Not completely true, Sensymilla. Wroclaw was devastated in 1241 during the Mongol invasion. The inhabitants burned down their own city to force the Mongols to a quick withdrawal. Like many Polish cities of that age the city was expanded by adopting a German town law. A new center of the town was created around Rynek. The new and rebuilt town adopted Magdeburg rights in 1262 and shortly after joined the Hanseatic league.
parisienne72 3 years ago
Despite the control of the region by the Polish Piast dynasty the city enjoyed self-administration. But however, as I said Breslau's 700 year old soul was destroyed forever by the Soviets 70 yrs ago.
parisienne72 3 years ago
Expulsion is a crime against human rights. Just look at Palestine.
parisienne72 3 years ago
Sensymilla, you said "Poles didn't devastate German marks". That's totally wrong. Have you ever heard of "odniemczanie" and "polonizacja"? This degermanisation and polonisation of Breslau included f.e. the destruction of German monuments, the overpainting of German inscriptions and symbols on houses, churches and schools but also the complete evaporation of the historic German street names...
parisienne72 3 years ago
...not to mention the falsification of history by telling the city's new Polish inhabitants that the expulsion of the Germans was a necessary act for the recovery of old Polish soil. For me it is a shame that there was no protest from my country against this acts of inhumanity.
parisienne72 3 years ago
Germans wasn't expelled because of land recovery. They main reason of expulsion, was that they were announced as Polish enemy. Sure it was an evil crime, especially from the perspective of 2008. But back then it was I guess hard to accept that some of them happen to be innocent. War in Poland was not the same as war in France, here was a real hell. It made people very easy to turn against Germans.
Sensymilla 3 years ago
"odniemczanie" you mean rebuilding 70% destroyed Wroclaw to match it's original German architecture, you call polonization? bringing back the streets, squares, buildings alive again, you call odniemczanie? Sure those structures that survived the war were polonized, but isn't that logic result what happened? The same was in Lviv which became Ukrainian. But I don't blame Ukrainians that they renamed Polish structures there. Why wouldn't they? the city became theirs.
Sensymilla 3 years ago
oh, I love when people are quoting wikipedia.
