@rogerfreeman1 Thank you. I am tired of people watching this one video and thinking this is the one and only diagnostic criteria for autism. Most all "early signs of autism" will occur in typical children. As you stated, one must also look at the other diagnostic criterias.
@aware4autism I agree. Only a doctor can truly determine whether a child has autism. Some behaviours can happen for any reason, it doesn't always mean he or she has Autism.
@rogerfreeman1 Well, yes, but if you've seen the other videos and read some of the comments left by the uploader, you would know that Jade does indeed have autism.
@lonepantherkmt You talk about exterminating her because she has autism? I say we exterminate morons like you who have nothing better to but troll around talking about people. There are kids out there who have autism that are 10 times smarter than you or me. So do the world a favor and get a life.

Get your daughter to see a pediatric psychiatrist - don't trust the uneducated opinions of random people on the internet. Early therapy helps. MY two sons have Asperger's syndrome - and the sensory diet therapy and social skills therapy helped them tremendiously. Read the book "Pretending to be Normal" written by a very smart woman who has autism, and is the mother of an autistic child. Good luck!!!
@64forestkat what is the diet?? I have autism and was wondering if a diet would lighten my symptoms some. I am a bit doubtful (for me--not for all children, as I have seen diets work for other people). Just curious, and maybe I will give it a shot.
Wow how the hell did you manage to relate that to autism? She has feet as well, and she has autism, logically feet cause autism. She jumped as well, any child who jumps must have autism!
Oh Hand Flapping?! Thats what you got for autism? Just because a toddler reacts to the TV instead of standing or sitting there with a blank stare like a retard doesn't indicate autism. There isn't a child in the world who doesn't express excitement through vague tactile output. I'll bet the TV gets way more eye contact than you.
Both my little girls has Autism. One hand flaps one doesnt. And to those who have made unhelpful comments, its one sign. Yes it might be a red flag to one parent to get a little one checked out but its not like you go to doctor and say oh their hand flapping they are autistic. You have months of observations, appointments and tests (well in the UK atleast). Early intervention makes a huge difference
@mummytoTandJ dont mind them ignorance is bliss and if by chance one day they or someone they know has a child with autism that they may have to watch or take care of for a day or so they will learn to eduacte themselves before soeaking so boldly. These are just signs her daughter was already diagnosed with the disorder, she is just trying to help other parents who have to wiat through time to figure out if this is just a child being a child or one of many signs that may mean otherwise.
Hand-flapping is NOT a red-flag for autism. Many people don't realize this. First of all, most toddlers to this. Secondly, most autistics have sensory processing disorder, but you can have sensory processing disorder WITHOUT being autistic. My daughter is one of those people. She flapped her hands and walked on toes..but no autism. There's also something called motor stereotypies. social/communicative impairment is a red-flag,.not hand-flapping.
Hello I'm not trying to be rude but it does just look like a normal child flapping her arms out of excitement .This is something that could cause undue worry in parents with healthy children.
@Nachomomma2 this is just one early sign of autism. A child needs to display additional symptoms to be diagnosed with autism. Most toddlers will in fact display a symptom or two of autism during their development.
@aware4autism This was the very first thing I noticed about my child with Down Syndrome. Everyone said it was because she was delayed, noone would believe it was autism. Guess what? Six years later, diagnosed with autism.
I jm from the Philippines. It was just today that we came to an observation of the possibility that our child might have the same condition as well.
The hand flapping of your baby jade is almost identical to our daughter also. Might you give us some useful tips and links on how to further assist for the development of our child?
It is well to note however that we simply "suspect" that she has the same condition.
For information on the bases of many nonverbal learning disorders (common in Asperger's), in addition to audiological disorders such as Autism (toward end of talk) search "Dr. Laurie Cestnick" and "harvard university" on youtube for a video. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
Thoughts of a girl with Asperger's: I think this could be concidered a sign, of course in combination with tons of others~ This particular one is probably a sign only if she does it for -things- she loves, not for people~ In this video, she doesn't notice her mom's there at all, a normal kid would probably try to show her mom how much she likes it, right?...
i do worry that people are looking for problems and finding them when its all just part of growing up. my little girl flapped her hands hummed for an hours on end and did all sorts of things that we thought was kind of crazy between the ages of 0 and 5 but now she is just about to turn 7 she is a happy smart kid who has superb social skills and is doing great at school all of the odd stuff she has grown out of . so all im saying is dont drug your kids up just wait and see .and let them grow.
@scribs01 never drugged my kid up, but 6 years later, still autistic.
the thing to look for in children like your daughter is communication skills. Did she ever lose them,or have a delay in them? That is the hallmark sign of autism.
I would also like to add that this is the only behaviour that I'm aware of as signs so far in him. He love his cars does not line up toys or anything like that. I am making him an appointment to see the doctor and have his opinion. I"m just so darn worried about my little guy my heart is breaking at the thought.
I'm feeling a little sad and worried for my little 2 year old boy. I've noticed he flaps and sometimes vibrates when excited and also out of frustration. I had no idea this was a sign of autisim and thought he was just being a normal toddler. He will also spin sometimes and shake his head back and forth with a smile on his face. On the other hand he is very affectionate and give me lots of hugs and kisses. He makes eye contact and will look at me when talked to. He does not talk yet.
Many of the comments here are similar to those of the very few friends and family I have communicated my concerns with. How can people assume that a parent is being over protective or over reacting when certain behaviours are pointing to possible autism? I have been patronised to the nth degree so now I dont speak to anyone about it. My friend, whose son overcame autism said that she experienced this from her own circle and health professionals.
Jade looks exactly like one of our twin boys in this clip...she has precisely the same body movements. Our little guy (just 2yrs) is displaying most of the autism signs although doesnt stack or line things up. We are fighting for an assessment, there is a waiting list for the waiting list! Its been 7 months now and no movement, told it could be another year or more before he will be seen. Time to get a bank loan and pay through the nose so that we can move forward with helping him.
It is amazing that so many people live in such a state of denial that they feel the need to judge a parent for being selfless enough to seek the help their child needs and then try to educate others.
ok im sorry, but she looks excited, this really upsets me for every little thing a child does from flapping hands to maybe doing some thing else, theres always something wrong, im sorry i just have my opion
Your opinion is correct. All children will display a sign or two of autism during their development. However, multiple signs need to be present for a child to be considered autistic.
@lissettegijay i agree, she is definitely flapping for a reason. it's normal for kids to get excited at videos like that! i've seen hand-flapping and that is NOT hand flapping. that looks like normal excitement to me.
@lissettegijay I have a daughter who learned to speak through ecolalia. She had trouble with communication and theory of mind when she was younger so they labeled her autistic. I never agreed with the DX and they thought I was just in denial. Well today she speaks completely normal, engages and the "professionals" who gave her the DX originally can't explain why she is "miraculously recovered". Its like I had been trying to tell them all along, she wansn't autistic to begin with.
couldn't agree with you more. Society is so anxious to diagnos disorders in children , when real autism is actually quite rare. This is sick, and parents posting their children on youtube is inappropriate
@lissettegijay To a person who does not know what to look for, then that is exactly what this would appear to be. This is a form of self-stimulation common to those with autism. That's the reason we need to share this information- not to have people think they can diagnose on their own- but to give some education. Especially with Autism- TIME IS CRITICAL. Early intervention can be a tremendous help.
This could just as well be Stereotypic Movement Disorder (in a typically developing child) and not autism at all. Autism/Asperger must be diagnosed independently of stereotyped behavior such as hand-flapping, pacing, etc. Unfortunately autism is the first diagnosis most people assume. -- Roger D. Freeman, M.D.
@lissettegijay wow first of all if you dont know about autism then your opinion doesnts really count. Ignorance is bliss. I work with autistic children all day and most dont take meds nor do they exhibit steryotipical behavior for there age range. Thais lady is just trying to bring wareness out there for many parents who know or fear there child may have autism. I dont believe it's in our vaccines, but can you blame a mother for trying to show others who may need to see this
@lissettegijay She does look excited--but a lot of neurotypical excited children do not flap their hands. That is a classic sign of autism. Nothing in the video or the description of it says the poster thinks there is anything "wrong". She just pointed out the girl has autism.
I remember when my son used to do that from the time he was 6 months old. It's been a long time ago. He is 9 years old now. But when he was a baby I always knew something was wrong with him and I had never heard of autism until he was diagnosed at 3 years old. It's been a long hard road but he has really come a long way. He's technically a 4th grader now at a 1st -2nd grade level
i have an autistic son who is responding very well to the gluten free diet. you should check it out IF your child is autistic. gluten feeds the 'spacey' behavior. we are getting lots of eye contact from him, and it's only been 10 days on the diet.
Look, don't make your kid suffer when she gets older. If she's capable enough to act as a moderately normal child would, treat her like one. Obsessing over her differences can only cause pain.
I don't obsess about her differences, I CELEBRATE them! Jade is the most amazing unique kid in the world!
I am SOOOO THANKFUL however, that she was able to get a dx early, so we knew why she was different, and could help her early, so she can grow to do amazing things!
@aware4autism Thank you for your videos. It must be hard when those who are truly ignorant to this disease make comments like some have to you. I am piping in as a voice of support and encouragement. If my mother had known that early signs like these are indicators, then my brother would have had a better shot at getting some early intervention. These videos will help many. Thank you for sharing.
@SuperHurra That is a very ignorant comment to make- you are saying to try to force a person to be what WE want them to be, rather than WHO they are? What good has that ever- EVER- done for a society? Autism is a disease, it's not a choice. My brother is on the spectrum, and my family chose your way. And you know what? It was the wrong choice. Accepting EACH person for who they are is the only answer.
Yeah; But she isn't her disease. Instead of labeling her hand-flapping as "an early sign of autism" they could simply accept it as -a child flapping her hands-.
What a beautiful little girl! My brother has asperger's disease and he does the same thing. He's 11 now and has gone through a lot of different programs and groups to help him learn better ways to deal with excitement. We just have to put in a family effort to remind him of what he is doing.
I think your daughter is beautiful and it's parents like you that help others to see that every little thing is important. I work in a residential school that specialises in autism in the UK and it is the best job ever. Thank you for putting up these videos of your beautiful girl.
Little babys and tots all react like that when they are excited. You can't go by that to diagnos someone so young. I had five sons and as babys they all acted like that when they were excited . I do have one son who was diagnosed by psyciatrist as having AS. He is briliant and was reading at two years old. He had to have the same shoes all the time if I baught diffrent shoes he through a fit, he waddled when he walked loud noises really upsets him. Thats how I knew.
My wife has a full grown cousin and the guy scares me when he comes near me! The guy is 17 yrs. of age stands at 5' 10" tall! He is a big kid and was diagnosed at a very young age with the wost autism 1 can have! He rocks back and forth flaps his hands quickly and violently and also makes so loud noises! He like to pat people on the back it seems to me or what ever! I don't go near him because I do not know much about his afflictions I guess
I cant believe the amount of awfull comments people have made on here . I work with children who are battling Autism every day and I think that those comments prove that people need educating about Autism so that they understand what its about and can then stop commenting on something they obviously know nothing about . I hope Jade is doing well she is adorable :) xxx
Seems like doctors and "experts" come crawling out of the woodwork when they have the chance to open their flaps without thinking. Jeez. Wish people would just keep their inane thoughts to themselves.
My son does this but only when he's angry. He goes for the "big test" in June. I am nervous, but I have known for about a year that he was different. Good luck in the future.
It's your video, so I believe that you can just delete that person's comment. It's pretty hateful, but I get the sense that the person is just trying to get a rise out of others.
My son hand flaps too when he is excited and he is on the spectrum thanks for sharing this video, i just was looking to see how other children respond to excitement in their worlds :)
Aware4autism, I just want you to know that I appreciate the videos. I am a pre-k teacher and often we are the fist people to say that there may be a problem with a child's development. We are trained to work with children developing typically and when we see development that is not typical, we often don't know if calls for intervention. It is important to see some of the typical signs of autism, apraxia, sensory disorders etc to show us that there is a pattern. The videos really help.
all of my children have done this when they are excited,,and none are autistic..although my younger sister is mentally retarded she does alot of hand flapping since she was a tot she is 30 now and still flaps strongly although her brain development has stayed at that of a 2 yr old mum thinks it may of been a vaccine its still a mystery.the dr has said its all the syptoms of autism but its not so i understand things from ur point of view best whishes..p's i like elmo too he is red & cute
listen my 5 yr old nephew is autistic just because they are flapping their hands around doesn't mean that she is too she is a toddler for gods sake she is watching TV and excited about what ever is on i did too when i was little and I'm not autistic personally i think your just a hypochondriac and your the one that needs to seek help
do you think I saw her doing this one day and decided she was autistic- let's post a video!? After a 2nd opinion, which confirmed her dx as severe, I decided to post old videos to help people see the early signs of autism. Jade is now 4, and still autistic. God I only WISH I was a hypochondriac, and it was I that needed help.
oh sorry i saw the video and didnt think she was that old already only reason we found out bout my nephew was bc his adhd and so they wanted him tested for it but i mean i watched all my cousins and nieces and nephews from the time they were born and they all did the same thing thats why i dont think to much into the arm flappin
ur daughter is so cute!!! I have a 3 year old that has Autism and is now in preschool....he can spell his full name, and say his ABC's...my husband made the comment that he wished he could do that at his age!!! i agree with u that i hope the world can share my view on my son as well....good luck to u :)
chrissy..if you have such of a problem keep it to yourself and stop putting other people on the spot for a 14 year old girl you quie cheeky which i think is very rude people can do whatever they want. my friend works with autistic children and she told me its the best job shes ever done.
why are you responding to a 14 year old? ignore and block her posts. anyway my nephew did the same things jumped a lot and flapped arms over excitedly. he doesn't speak to this day and he is 9 now.
what kind of child comments on things she knows nothing about? What makes you think I want her to have autism, or that I diagnosed it? I posted these videos after Jade's dx. In hopes of helping other parents. You really need to grow up before posting such ignorant comments.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ohhh burn.
haha not.
i'm 14 && far from a little girl,
ohh && i didnt say i was "informed" on ur kid, i simply said u need 2 get a life && quit assuming that every little thing that your child does means she has autism.
thats kinda pathetic && i feel sorry for your kids.
haha, & i dont give a shit what you say about my spelling.
btw, it's good to know a 14 yr old is more informed than Jade's team of doctors. Get over yourself before you grow up little girl, the world is a cruel place.
Ok, lady, you're a loon. This is the 3rd video you posted that does NOT display the behavior you said it would. She isn't flapping her arms. All babies do what she's doing. What, do you get all sorts of sympathy when you tell people(falsely)that she's autistic? Sick.
Yes, I get so much sympathy, that is why I made the entire thing up. Jade is even in an autistic school, and must ride the bus an hour each way so I can get sympathy. She is 4, and not potty trained, so I can get sympathy. She cannot answer questions, so I can get sympathy. She runs into the road, and nearly gets hit, so I can get sympathy. She beats the shit out of herself so I can get sympathy. Zona, you're the loon, and karma is coming for you.
Whats with the tv watching? Kids should not be watching any tv for at least the first 2 to 3 years of their lives. The television has an effect on their neurological developement. Heck.. there are even cases of adults having epileptic attacks due to what they see on tv.
Yes, some who are prone to seizures can have them if the tv (or computer for that matter) plays a sequence of color flashes in the right order. Happenned in Japan after an episode of Pokemon.
Allowing Jade to watch Elmo while I cleaned doubtfully altered her development as much as the mandatory vaccinations she couldn't handle, and had seizures from.
NEVER vaccinate an individual who has Primary Immunodeficiency. I wish we had known.
I wish you well. You have adorable & clever girl. She will be OK. Our modern society is developing way too fast nowdays - that is the real reason for labeling everybody autistic who otherwise would had been considered having developmental delay 30 years ago.
My wife and i found this video very helpful..Our son is waiting for diadnosis..We are trying to find out as much as we can..Callum is 2 and does exactly the same thing and also shows many of the other traits...So thanks again for going to the trouble of posting this very helpful video xx
I am not trying to be mean, but if I was curious about Autism, this video would totally confuse me, because this girl doesn't show any signs in this video...SHE MAY BE AUTISTIC, BUT THE VIDEO DOESNT SHOW IT, AND it is confusing to non autistic parents. my son Charlie is 4, Autistic, diagnosed at 2, and she isnot even a fifth of what he is.
I am sorry for writing that...my comment is totally pertaining to THIS CLIP...I did watch your other clips and see the tendencies. That was the first video I saw, and I felt she looked like a happy 21 month old. Take Care.
S'ok. I posted this, because while reading about autism before Jade's dx, I never knew what hand flapping really was, although I kept reading about it. Heck, I never knew what half of the early signs were until I saw a child displaying them!
It is amazing how each child shows varying signs. Although Jade is very social, and vibrant, has excellent eye contact, she can't answer questions, and can't truly communicate. These kids are all sooo unique and amazing.
I think it's important to remember that hand flapping is NOT necessarily a sign of autism. It can be a sign of sensory integration dysfunction/sensory processing disorder (terms are interchangeable). People with autism usually have SI dysfunction/SPD.
Hand flapping can also look more like trying to take off and fly than this cute little girl is exhibiting. I've also seen it happen when a child is not excited and jumping but just casually playing.
Sad that people think this is making fun of her. Personally, we found her "flapping" adorable (and still do). It wasn't until later we learned that it is a sign of autism. It is true that most children will display a sign or two of autism, but when a child shows many signs very early, intervention should be made.
Excuse me, CommentCommenter, but I am autistic, and yes, one of the reasons autistic people flap their hands is BECAUSE WE'RE HAVING FUN. We may also do it because we're stressed, too.
Saying that someone is autistic is not at all an insult or "making fun". It's attitudes like that that made me so miserable going to school.
My son does that all the time. He's done it since birth. When he could stand up it turned into the jumping and hand flapping and his legs go mad when he sits down. He was assessed as autistic last November.
I have found today a video with my daughter (at 6 years old) where she is doing hand flapping because she was excited while playing in a show at school. Thank you again. My daughter is doing very very good, thank G-d! Merry Christmas! All the best to you and your family!!!
This video gave me chills...your daughter looks and does in the video exactly what my daughter did at that age, even looked physically the same, even the hair looks the same. :) Her and I finally know we have AS. I want to encourage you, my daughter is 11 now and doing very very good. I am doing good, too. We are not very social, but we are happy and functional.
My son has SI dysfunction & at 8 still handflaps when excited or just has excess steam to blow off, but has started clapping & watching his hands instead of just flapping.
aww, she is so cute! i've been looking at autism websites at the moment, just to see what it was all about, having watched a movie "Miracle Run", where the children in it have autism. Thanks for doing these to show people the early signs, also quick question, how old is Jade now then?

These are just signs her daughter was already diagnosed with the disorder, she is just trying to help other parents who have to wiat through time to figure out if this is just a child being a child or one of many signs that may mean otherwise.
nyruby 9 months ago
Hand-flapping is NOT a red-flag for autism. Many people don't realize this. First of all, most toddlers to this. Secondly, most autistics have sensory processing disorder, but you can have sensory processing disorder WITHOUT being autistic. My daughter is one of those people. She flapped her hands and walked on toes..but no autism. There's also something called motor stereotypies. social/communicative impairment is a red-flag,.not hand-flapping.
TheBluesky72 11 months ago
@TheBluesky72 Yes, but hand-flapping is ONE sign of autism (not ONLY for autism, and not the most important sign OF autism, but still, it is a sign).
littlelily613 9 months ago
Hello I'm not trying to be rude but it does just look like a normal child flapping her arms out of excitement .This is something that could cause undue worry in parents with healthy children.
Nachomomma2 1 year ago
@Nachomomma2 this is just one early sign of autism. A child needs to display additional symptoms to be diagnosed with autism. Most toddlers will in fact display a symptom or two of autism during their development.

Dear Ms,
A pleasant day to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Junmer

Thoughts of a girl with Asperger's: I think this could be concidered a sign, of course in combination with tons of others~ This particular one is probably a sign only if she does it for -things- she loves, not for people~ In this video, she doesn't notice her mom's there at all, a normal kid would probably try to show her mom how much she likes it, right?...
Purly 1 year ago
i do worry that people are looking for problems and finding them when its all just part of growing up. my little girl flapped her hands hummed for an hours on end and did all sorts of things that we thought was kind of crazy between the ages of 0 and 5 but now she is just about to turn 7 she is a happy smart kid who has superb social skills and is doing great at school all of the odd stuff she has grown out of . so all im saying is dont drug your kids up just wait and see .and let them grow.
scribs01 1 year ago 3
@scribs01 never drugged my kid up, but 6 years later, still autistic.
the thing to look for in children like your daughter is communication skills. Did she ever lose them,or have a delay in them? That is the hallmark sign of autism.
aware4autism 11 months ago 3
I would also like to add that this is the only behaviour that I'm aware of as signs so far in him. He love his cars does not line up toys or anything like that. I am making him an appointment to see the doctor and have his opinion. I"m just so darn worried about my little guy my heart is breaking at the thought.
Cassandra649 1 year ago

AnCailinRua73 1 year ago
Jade looks exactly like one of our twin boys in this clip...she has precisely the same body movements. Our little guy (just 2yrs) is displaying most of the autism signs although doesnt stack or line things up. We are fighting for an assessment, there is a waiting list for the waiting list! Its been 7 months now and no movement, told it could be another year or more before he will be seen. Time to get a bank loan and pay through the nose so that we can move forward with helping him.
AnCailinRua73 1 year ago
It is amazing that so many people live in such a state of denial that they feel the need to judge a parent for being selfless enough to seek the help their child needs and then try to educate others.
kdubowik 1 year ago
ok im sorry, but she looks excited, this really upsets me for every little thing a child does from flapping hands to maybe doing some thing else, theres always something wrong, im sorry i just have my opion
lissettegijay 2 years ago 26
Your opinion is correct. All children will display a sign or two of autism during their development. However, multiple signs need to be present for a child to be considered autistic.
aware4autism 2 years ago 2
This has been flagged as spam show
@lissettegijay i agree, she is definitely flapping for a reason. it's normal for kids to get excited at videos like that! i've seen hand-flapping and that is NOT hand flapping. that looks like normal excitement to me.
hayleykg 1 year ago
@lissettegijay I have a daughter who learned to speak through ecolalia. She had trouble with communication and theory of mind when she was younger so they labeled her autistic. I never agreed with the DX and they thought I was just in denial. Well today she speaks completely normal, engages and the "professionals" who gave her the DX originally can't explain why she is "miraculously recovered". Its like I had been trying to tell them all along, she wansn't autistic to begin with.
KSitz77 1 year ago
@lissettegijay
couldn't agree with you more. Society is so anxious to diagnos disorders in children , when real autism is actually quite rare. This is sick, and parents posting their children on youtube is inappropriate
rnstuffy 1 year ago
@lissettegijay To a person who does not know what to look for, then that is exactly what this would appear to be. This is a form of self-stimulation common to those with autism. That's the reason we need to share this information- not to have people think they can diagnose on their own- but to give some education. Especially with Autism- TIME IS CRITICAL. Early intervention can be a tremendous help.
Queenlizzybeth 1 year ago
This could just as well be Stereotypic Movement Disorder (in a typically developing child) and not autism at all. Autism/Asperger must be diagnosed independently of stereotyped behavior such as hand-flapping, pacing, etc. Unfortunately autism is the first diagnosis most people assume. -- Roger D. Freeman, M.D.
rogerfreeman1 10 months ago
@lissettegijay wow first of all if you dont know about autism then your opinion doesnts really count. Ignorance is bliss. I work with autistic children all day and most dont take meds nor do they exhibit steryotipical behavior for there age range. Thais lady is just trying to bring wareness out there for many parents who know or fear there child may have autism. I dont believe it's in our vaccines, but can you blame a mother for trying to show others who may need to see this
nyruby 9 months ago
@nyruby :-)
I agree.. except on your last point.
SickOfKnowItAlls 9 months ago
@lissettegijay She does look excited--but a lot of neurotypical excited children do not flap their hands. That is a classic sign of autism. Nothing in the video or the description of it says the poster thinks there is anything "wrong". She just pointed out the girl has autism.
littlelily613 9 months ago
I remember when my son used to do that from the time he was 6 months old. It's been a long time ago. He is 9 years old now. But when he was a baby I always knew something was wrong with him and I had never heard of autism until he was diagnosed at 3 years old. It's been a long hard road but he has really come a long way. He's technically a 4th grader now at a 1st -2nd grade level

i have an autistic son who is responding very well to the gluten free diet. you should check it out IF your child is autistic. gluten feeds the 'spacey' behavior. we are getting lots of eye contact from him, and it's only been 10 days on the diet.
happyfuncakes 2 years ago
I'm not sure what you're trying to show us. It just looks like she was excited about Elmo. All kids do that when they're excited...
hypershorty 2 years ago 6
very true. ALL kids will display a sign or two of autism at some point. MANY signs are needed to be diagnosed with autism.
FWIW, this is not the only early sign video here...
aware4autism 2 years ago 2
Look, don't make your kid suffer when she gets older. If she's capable enough to act as a moderately normal child would, treat her like one. Obsessing over her differences can only cause pain.
SuperHurra 2 years ago 16
I don't obsess about her differences, I CELEBRATE them! Jade is the most amazing unique kid in the world!
I am SOOOO THANKFUL however, that she was able to get a dx early, so we knew why she was different, and could help her early, so she can grow to do amazing things!
This week, she wants to be an astronaut!

Queenlizzybeth 1 year ago
@SuperHurra That is a very ignorant comment to make- you are saying to try to force a person to be what WE want them to be, rather than WHO they are? What good has that ever- EVER- done for a society? Autism is a disease, it's not a choice. My brother is on the spectrum, and my family chose your way. And you know what? It was the wrong choice. Accepting EACH person for who they are is the only answer.
Queenlizzybeth 1 year ago
@Queenlizzybeth
Yeah; But she isn't her disease. Instead of labeling her hand-flapping as "an early sign of autism" they could simply accept it as -a child flapping her hands-.
SuperHurra 11 months ago
What a beautiful little girl! My brother has asperger's disease and he does the same thing. He's 11 now and has gone through a lot of different programs and groups to help him learn better ways to deal with excitement. We just have to put in a family effort to remind him of what he is doing.

My son does this but only when he's angry. He goes for the "big test" in June. I am nervous, but I have known for about a year that he was different. Good luck in the future.

Thanks

Yes, I get so much sympathy, that is why I made the entire thing up. Jade is even in an autistic school, and must ride the bus an hour each way so I can get sympathy. Whats with the tv watching? Kids should not be watching any tv for at least the first 2 to 3 years of their lives. The television has an effect on their neurological developement. Heck.. there are even cases of adults having epileptic attacks due to what they see on tv.
joules1999 3 years ago
Yes, some who are prone to seizures can have them if the tv (or computer for that matter) plays a sequence of color flashes in the right order. Happenned in Japan after an episode of Pokemon.
Allowing Jade to watch Elmo while I cleaned doubtfully altered her development as much as the mandatory vaccinations she couldn't handle, and had seizures from.
NEVER vaccinate an individual who has Primary Immunodeficiency. I wish we had known.

I am sorry for writing that...my comment is totally pertaining to THIS CLIP...I did watch your other clips and see the tendencies. That was the first video I saw, and I felt she looked like a happy 21 month old. Take Care.
chinadoll112370 3 years ago
These kids are all sooo unique and amazing.
aware4autism 3 years ago
btw, she WAS a happy 21 month old (and is now a happy 4 yr old). Autistic kids can be happy, no DSMV criteria saying they can't! :)
aware4autism 3 years ago
I think it's important to remember that hand flapping is NOT necessarily a sign of autism. It can be a sign of sensory integration dysfunction/sensory processing disorder (terms are interchangeable). People with autism usually have SI dysfunction/SPD.
Hand flapping can also look more like trying to take off and fly than this cute little girl is exhibiting. I've also seen it happen when a child is not excited and jumping but just casually playing.
harlean32 3 years ago
Looks like a kid having fun to me! Nice how you make fun of your own child on YouTube. How sick.
CommentCommenter 3 years ago
Sad that people think this is making fun of her. Personally, we found her "flapping" adorable (and still do). It wasn't until later we learned that it is a sign of autism. It is true that most children will display a sign or two of autism, but when a child shows many signs very early, intervention should be made.
aware4autism 3 years ago
Excuse me, CommentCommenter, but I am autistic, and yes, one of the reasons autistic people flap their hands is BECAUSE WE'RE HAVING FUN. We may also do it because we're stressed, too.
Saying that someone is autistic is not at all an insult or "making fun". It's attitudes like that that made me so miserable going to school.
