  • Birima, the co-operative credit society founded and managed by Youssou N’Dour, was created to assist Senegalese people in need of funds for a business project or promising activity, but unable to provide sufficient security. Birima is the title of a song by Youssou N’Dour, a track on his album Joko: From Village to Town, but above all it is the name of a 19th-century Senegalese king who was very reserved (he spoke to his people once a year) and placed great importance on keeping one's word.

  • He assumed the throne of Cajor And became well-known for his festive reign Where every occasion was reason for Celebration in great style Having inherited a rich oral tradition He encouraged local musicians And his patronage gave rise to the flourishing of The music known as mbaboor Ah! • it just magical

  • Dear All,

This song shows that if Africans want to do things they can do them well. It is not because Youssou N is a great figure in Cameroon that I am saying so: no. I do not understand what he says, but the scene leads me to some of our traditional scenes here in Cameroon, at our village levels: we did not learn these things from the whites.

The poetry, the lyrics, the setting (attire, background, movements... ) are all very common to our Cameroonian villages here!!

    Saidou, Yde Cameroon

Est-ce que qqn peut m'éxpliquer le sens du mot ''Birima'' ainsi que le sens général de la chanson?

  • @richsocaplaya Birima was a king of Kingdom of Cayor ,in Senegal of old,

ie was actually a great warrior, like a 'samourai' in Japan

  • @richsocaplaya avant la colonisation francaise, le sénégal était divisé en royaumes et BIrima était à la tête d'un de ses royaumes (le royaume du cayo en l'occurence) et puis dans cette chanson youssou ndour lui rend hommage !
