If you get just one DVD get Dennis "The Art of Accompaniment." I wondered why Dennis knows all these other guitatrists and it's probably because he's one of the finest rhythm player/teachers around.
To learn the basic melodies and chords to songs Robin Nolan's books are very good.
Younger players worry too much about being able to play fast and flashy. It will come in time. Learn to play rhythm and learn the melodies first and all the rest will fall into place.
@jaapberk when Denis calls out the numbers, like "12-10-12-12" for the Dmin6 chord he's giving you the fret numbers, from the one closest to you. i.e. 12th fret of the fourth string/10th fret of the 3rd string/12th fret of the 2nd string . . .etc. -- listen to those numbers and you don't need a chart
Thanks for posting this - concise, helpful, and easy to follow! a question though, does anyone know how Dennis is providing the beat at the end of the lesson where he plays through all the chords? Is that a drum track he looped into the video, a constant thumb slap or something else entirely? Thanks for helping!
This is very interesting and helpful to Django fans, of which I am certainly one. My thanks to Mr. Chang for excellent instruction. Also, to the blogger below who asked about "A minor" you might go to the Internet, "Chord Finder" or "Chord Master." Many websites like these will give you diagrams of thousands of chords, including the less common jazz chords with diminished and augmented fifths. Good luck!
It's worth forking out for the (gitane)DG-500 - it's not that much more expensive and it's a very expressive guitar. Don't use sagas gypsy jazz strings though - they aren't very good. Get some argentines, and a good stiff pick - dugain or wegen for preference.
playing django music or gypsys music is not about fuc....g instrument many gypsy s like django and django too was playin at classical guitar folk but music is in our hearts not in expensive guitars and im so sorry for my bad english we gypsy play sometimes at guitar s cost 20 euro but we got feeling man :-)
i'm looking to buy a selmer style guitar, does anyone have any advice they could give me? right now i'm loking at the gitane 250, since its the cheapest and has some good reviews, but if anyone has any suggestions they would be MUCH appreciated. :)
@singana1 gah i got the lulo reinhardt model. its hard to play and i knew that before i bought it, which is why i bought it. same idea, just i spent more money ha.
It must be really frustrating for you to have to talk in terms of frets and notes interchangeably, I personally prefer talking in terms of notes/scale tones, but then again, I'm not a beast like you Mr. Chang.
at 2:30 listening through for a second time I hear Amin6/9 , E9 , Bb9+ you refer to the last chord as a simple Bb7, although theoretically it's a Bb7#9 chord or 1-3-5-b7-#9 if the entire chord is sustained.
It's known as "stacking" thirds; because when you stack thirds together, a chord is created.
in the DVD, I explain why i call chords by their simplest names. the important thing is to be able to hear the sounds.. a pro musician will know what extensions to use...
I would say it was strangely syncopated, but I wouldn't go so far as to judge whether I thought it was later or early. I think it's a stupid chord anyways. I don't see how Django's mangled fretting hand would have been able to do a stretch like that.
I just discovered your videos today. They are by far the easiest lessons to follow I've found on YouTube. Thank you so much for putting them up. I've spent a couple of hours practicing these techniques and I can already see improvements.
mrbluestrek1, it would be a D6/9 if the bass note would be D, here I guess it is G so... Jean Paul

Why not show these chords on a chart? it would help me a lot.
Or can I find a place to see them?
