Whatever vocal ability this woman may have head was eclipsed and destroyed by drug use. Calling her a role model or a positive influence of any kind (for anyone) is really disgusting.
how can people judge her for her flaws and mistakes rather than prise her for her talent, i'll never understand this. it's such a missarable aproach to life. to me heartless critisism has killed more people than we can even imagine. and then we go blaming it to heroin or alcohol or drugs...
@charinetta You can judge for her flaws and mistakes because she took her great talent from us. She should have been more thoughtful of herself. I am very mad at her, Hendrix and Morrison.
@keaton1895 that is a very ignorant thought. it is the lifestyles that those people lived and experienced that enabled them to make the music for us to enjoy.
@madSHKRILLZerrrrt You and others are because you make excuses because they were selfish. The artists can have the experience without being stupid. You take Lennon for example, we lost him because he was murdered not from drugs.
I found about about janis jolin years ago when I was looking for people born or died on my birthday...and there she was. great artist; didn't give a sh!t about fame, or being popular, or getting all dolled up. You think someone like lady gaga or beyonce would be as popular having to complete with women such as tina turner, janis, or grace slick?
Janis laughs at the popularity question because she wasn't in it for attention and paid that aspect no regard. Imagine days when music was made for the sake of art. Janis Joplin, what a true musician
@Didgeridoozie I think that's so true and regretibly, I don't think that Janis thought much of herself either, which is incredible to me! We never see ourself in the positive light that others do. Most of us tend to jump head first into believing the very worst that people have to say or think about us. Crazy huh? Either way, she was a rare gem, who because of a few insensitive "professional assholes" (pardon my french) who were cruel to her, had no sense of her own self-worth. Sad. Peace.
I was born and raied in PA TX and most good people miss Janis, she was ahead of her time for our area. We have a concert every year and they always have a Janis rememorance band, same one for the last several shows. Please believe she is missed in her home town. Janis is the best and overall the people from PA respect what she did and I for 1 of many am proud to say she is from Port Arthur Texas!
Nothing wrong with Kelly Clarkson. But the difference between Kelly Clarkson and Janis Joplin is that Janis created herself--and then the media picked up on her.
Whereas in the case of Kelly Clarkson, the media created her: she had to be what the producers wanted her to be: subject of the symbolic order. How could she be a creative individual?
I got to talk to her briefly in the streets of New York one night in 1969 - the year of this interview.. but she was not as serious that night we met.. you can read about it on my blog... you can search dakiniverona or dakini verona. on blogspot
Janis was an extremely intelligent woman, but high school was heartbreaking for her. Her devotion to black music/blues made her an outcast (this was Texas!) and she was voted Ugliest Girl. Even though she became famous, something dragged her down and heroin did her in shortly after I saw her at The Festival Express in Toronto (1970 - with her great Canadian musicians - The Full Tilt Boogie Band) She was so funny and sweet - giggling and inviting us all back to a party.
I FREAKING LOVE HER HAIR!!! i WANT her hair! and man, janis was and still is, RIP, one STAND UP lady. so what she had her problems, who the hell doesnt? but dammit, she did what she wanted to do professionally, and her music and love for it always came before anything else she did. fuck you port arthur for not knowing what a flower in the sun you had!
I so agree with you. Janis did her own thing, and paved the way for other women in rock, and in general. She paid a price for her honesty and good heart, and never did find peace of mind. In a way, she passed away at least knowing that she really made it, and was a star in her own right, and no one has been able to compare to her yet.
Its unusual, but when you watch the young performers of the 60s (Janis, Jimi, Jim, the Beatles, etc) they all speak very well...calm and thoughtful. I dont want to say that the rough life matured them beyond their years, because that doesn't make you well-spoken. I think people back then had both manners and a larger vocabulary. Stars these days sound like morons in comparison.
aw man.... words cant explain how much i wish i hung around with her... just the emotion she gave on stage.. uhh man... id give everything to see her preform... one day man... one day ill join her
Prejudice helped to destroy Janice. The recent blogs detracts from the real issue- that her talent shines on .Beauty is in the eye /ear of the beholder so why destroy another innocent girl? behave yourselves bloggers and show a little RESPECT.
why are you so negative about music? its not like you can be the best at art....music is such a big thing, its sad you cant open your mind to other kinds. i never said you had to like what i like, but you should at least respect other kinds of music and respect other people who enjoy other kinds. im sure janis was big enough of a person to do so. but im not going to argue with you anymore, its not really worth my time if you dont listen and your just rude about it.
i'm in no way, shape, or form negative about music. i was only being rude because you were being rude first. i couldn't care less about what kinds of music people listen to, but i don't respect artists who are just in it for fame and fortune. kelly may have talent, but she was handed everything through american idol. to me, she just blends in with the rest of the music industry today. she isn't really creative, it's just the same old pop stuff that we've listened to for the past decade.
dear sweet Pearl...wow, long time gone...you were beautiful and you never knew it....Trust In Me Baby, that song used to make me cry, your voice was the dove that carried you, and your adorable lil cackling laff....RIP Pearl....x

i completely agree about janis, but there is ONE singer nowadays that i can think of that is very honest and open and strong and thats kelly clarkson. she reminds me a lot of janis actually.
you'd be surprised. go look up kelly clarkson singing patti griffins up to the mountian...shes different then other artists today...people just stereotype, and she loves and appreciates janis's music
kelly clarkson is shit compared to Janis. kelly is mainstrem pop. i mean being on american idol is just a fucking cry for attention and publicity. Janis worked her way up to the top and she's stayed at the top for over 40 year now.
You are ignorant. kelly is every genre you can think of, youd know that if you actually knew what kind of artist she was. and she was on the very first american idol, before it was huge so you cant say she was on there for attention. so pretty much everything you said is retarded. learn your facts and then talk. janis is an incredible artist though, ill give her that.
YOU'RE retarded for comparing a washed up trashy artist to Janis Joplin. i know what kind of artist kelly is. she's mainstream pop, like i said. going on any reality tv show in order to try to win a record deal is a cry for attention. you do that kind of shit to get your name out there. Janis was purely about the music. she wasn't rich and she didn't care about how many records she sold or how famous she was. i bet in another 30 years, nobody will even know who kelly clarkson is.
I think he is saying that Janis was unique with her singing, she put so much heart and passion into every note she sang, she truly had soul when she sang. He is just saying no other artists today are like that with their music. While Kelly does have a great voice and does put emotion into her singing, it just could never compare to the passion Janis put into her music.
i agree with everything said about janis. however im sure all the people on here talking negatively about kelly have not actually heard all of her music. or have listened to her live performances. ive watched kelly and janis. i guess we will all just have to agree to disagree on this one.
This clip is from the film documentary "Janis". I have it on VHS, but it has never been released on DVD. I wish somebody'd get that act together and put it out on DVD with lots of extras. This is a touching, moving interview of Janis. God! No b.s. Just pure honesty, no pretense, like her singing. Janis, after all these years, I still miss you. Somehow the world was a better place when you were alive.
Texas also produced bill hicks richard linklater wes anderson willie nelson townes van zandt buddy holly the city of Austin and on and on...
and the elder Bush grew up in the northeast.
I have actually been to texas. and while its not the place for me (neither is america), you should know that there are some great fucking texans out there.
you would do better not to judge a group of people based on some of citizens. it shows a deep lack of of understanding.
Haha I love the way she sought freedom elsewhere and thought going back to her hometown was a bummer, i can totally relate to that. man i love janis, what a great human being. a real human being.
YES, that Biography is amazing!I loved every inch of it!Janis Joplin is absolutely amazing!Love to Janis so much! One of the most talented women singer's during that time! And Yes I believe what she said what true, San Fransisco was so much more freer. It sure is. My hometown! And I wouldn't live here for anything.
I absolutely love Janis, I just got done reading the biography written by her sister, Laura. I was crying by the third page...what a wonderful lady Janis J was! (:
I read that she found out she could sing when she and some of her friends were in a lighthouse and she tried singing and heard her voice in the echos of the lighthouse and ran out screaming, I can sing! I can sing! How exciting that must have been for her, and now, for those around her to have been there when she discovered she could sing. I wish I was there. Thanks for posting this interview.
