  • I remember seeing this at the NRM.

  • there could of been a 7th A4 preserved the commonwealth of Australia, apparently British railways asked NSWGR it but they said no

  • there cold of been an

  • The Silver Link not being preserved was a crime. And so was the scrapping of Herring Gull. Six engines left, two in America, WHY in the USA? Any British locomotive should stay firmly on British rails.

  • Wonderful bit of film, in colour too. That was a bit of a rarity in those days. Silver Jubilee and The Coronation - good stuff. Location, Ganwick Curve?

  • great film :-0)

  • the silver link train would be something special if they brought that back :)

  • It's sad you are moving Mallard to Locomotion. She's the crown jewl of the National Collection and is why many people actually visit York's NRM...

  • stunning footage.

I look forward to seeing more stunning footage like this

    Tom

  • i wish you guys at York Rail musesm will bring back LNER Class A4 4496 Dwight D Eisenhower and the LNER Class A4 4489 Dominion of Canada , These are british trains they belong in england not in america or canada , its ashame becauses these trains are stuck in a dusty museum never been properly care for lets start a donation box up in york to get these fine A4's back to england

  • If these are "British trains" then england is not they only country they could fit into. Britain is made up of 3 countries...

  • @Prestonukbenny While I agree that Dominion of Canada is in a sad state at the moment (I cannot vouch for Dwight D. Eisenhower, although I think it's still treated decently), don't forget that BR gave the two engines to Canada and the US respectively, and thus are not going to go back unless the respective museums feel it is appropriate. Besides, 4489 is expected to undergo a cosmetic overhaul sometime this year, and 4496 is part of an exhibit with two of Eisenhower's carriages.

  • ok im coming up to the a4 weekend in july and i need the times that the charters arrive from kings cross into york station,if you have the arrival times that would be fantastic, also if theres any heading down to london saturday night please let me know thanks

  • If you're coming with Steam Dreams on the Sir Nigel Gresley (Saturday) or the Union of South Africa (Sunday) then I believe they get to York at around 12.30pm.

  • Excellent cine footage there ! It would be good if I could see them in July but I live to far away :(.

  • Still THE best looking streamliners ever. 5*

  • that was the best A4 footage i've ever seen straight from search engine i'm guessing (is it?) it's like a promoting of when the 4 brittish surviving A4s will be reunited this year it would be cool to see this also reminds me to visit and see mallard and all the other gems in your archive

  • Nice, I never had the chance to see these although I do go out to see what I can when they are on tours!

  • Ah the age of steam. I love it. I used to go to preserved railways al the time, but life these days is so busy. When I came to york I remember I was pleasently suprised by the mallard, the fastest steam engine in the world, which is one of my favorate steam loco's. It just goes to show that Although LNER, GWR, The original Sothern Railway and LMS it just shows that the age of steam is always there.

  • Hi Stirlingshire - thanks for the comment. I think it's most people's favourite steam train (probably mine included, although I've got a soft spot for Deltics and Stanier Black 5s as well).

You can see in the museum that the Mallard is the centre of attention a lot of the time (when the Flying Scotsman isn't around, anyway!), and with good reason!

  • yes, The flying scotsman certainly is a favorate. It was the one that made me fall in love with trains and it was the first one bought for my model railway.
