But I think the people that are up in arms don't see what's happening as merely another stage of capitalism, they are told that this IS socialism. Just like people are told that the Soviet Union IS socialism, when it was anything but.
The American idea of left and right is very bizzare in my opinion. So it's easy to label a centrist politician as a socialist, a right-wing politician as a libertarian, etc etc.

@morgenr Yeah, a fair bit of republican spain (circa 1930's) was worker controlled. Apparently there was a fair bit of worker control in the Ukraine and one point, but I don't know much about that. Also the early Israeli Kibbutzim was based on Anarchist/Socialist principals. Also there was SOME level of worker control in Russia just before Lenin took over and got rid of all of that.
