  • they have 6 or 7 now

  • When you say a team of 4 people, is that 4 level designers, or you literally only have 4 people creating the entire game?

  • I keep freezing when I play the engine target test thing help?

  • I would recommend you guys to just license the newest Stalker dx10 game engine and then modify after that, see tech demo. It be easier -IMO and I'm sure you could negotiate a decent cut

  • STOP SAYING NATURAL SECTION 2. FUUU

  • Although I already have NS2 thanks to your generosity, having pre-ordered Overgrowth before the Organic Indie Pre-Order pack, I I think I will reserve a copy for a friend or something to help support you guys. NS2 looks utterly amazing considering the size of the team.

    Keep up the awesome work!

  • Charlie is really talented and has put his life and soul into making this game for years now. Its just on the Horizon I urge you all to preorder the game.

  • Yes but will there be wide open environments? WILL THERE?!

  • Sqirril.

    i hope thats sarcastic insiderjoke.

  • Wide open environments are what defines great games...

  • @Sqirril What happens to wide closed environments? Whats so bad about them? theres practically more fighting space, in a corridor, with roofs, and places for aliens to hide. where marines can't see them. >.<

  • haha the weapon is still from the old NS1

  • oh and the gun is pretty sweet

  • It all looks amazing, the lighting is great. Looking forward to playing and modding.

  • well it's from a 7 year old game.

  • Map development without any building process like in VALVe's Hammer Editor, did I get that point right?

That's like the best engine ever! :3

  • 1:30, when he passes through vent's shadows... that's incredible

  • It's called Volumetric Shadows (or Sun Rays or Sun Shafts) by the way :P.

  • the only thing here that really REALLY shocked me about this game i am dieing to play is, ONLY 4 PEOPLE WORKING ON IT! :O jeez that's amazing work that they have done! :D

  • only 4 people. wow

  • On responce to Gjen55: NO, they are using their onw engine (the 1st steps of the game they was using HL2 engine, but sometime after that they buildied their onw engine), and will not have any relation with HL2 / steam / valve (but they say they want to seel NS2 on steam too)

  • wow unk world made their own engine o.O!!! that is awesome then we don't have to pay for hl2

  • WRONG

  • what language are they using?

  • they are building there own engine off of C++

  • I do believe the game itself is mainly coded in LUA. But the engine itself was probably coded in C++.

  • Cant wait cant say anymore

  • I think this is one of the prettiest games I have seen, a mix between doom3 and source without the celluoid.

  • WOOOOo Ns fan 4 lyf xD

  • is it al ready out of when it comes out??

  • I'm a Constie! I remember feeling badass with my icon in game. I'm looking forward to playing NS2. I'm itching to play some NS, but I can't really do it on a laptop. :(

  • this game will be awesome like ns1, cant wait for it

  • Looks like you are wasting a lot of time making it look fancy. Nobody actually gives a fuck about graphics. It's the gameplay that matters.

  • Many people critisize valve for using an outdated engine for their new projects. If Unknown Worlds manage to have an engine that looks great on high-end systems and runs smooth on lower-end machines everyone should be fine;)

  • my gamehope #1

  • They already have a working version of the the game they are just concentrating on making the game fun.

  • Is this a beefed up mod team or are you trying to make the game? I know you want to make it a high quality game, and so does the community. If this is a real project you wont have the funding to develop for 3 years (unless it is more of a side project thing as mentioned before.)

Make those models that are needed for the game. Make the core elements. We would rather see a game slightly less on the technology side than have no game as a result of loss of interest/lack of funding.

  • It looks fantastic, but I noticed a bit of glitch when the blinds were activated. Does the lighting effect create an overdue burden on the graphics process?

  • Im just a little curious. Are you going to include shadows from the players, and not just stationary objects? Sorry if you said that somewhere in there and i missed it.

  • awesome work guys

  • Eh, I don't care if this takes another two years to be released. Maybe I'll have given up my WoW addiction by then. :)

  • LOOKS AMAZING even with the NS1 models! Keep it up!

  • It's really cool that you develop such things, but really, get the game out already. Anyone serious about playing competitive games will disable that stupid lighting anyway.

The gameplay is what it's all about.

  • very well done, this looks incredibly good. props to the 4man development team :) keep up the good work

  • constellation donations have been closed only until recently so i dont know what your talking about with the "milking".

  • milking valve. Do you think they do this for free?

  • Wtf are you blabbering on about?

  • Flayra is the company owner... I don't see how he can milk himself for money.

Just fyi Valve is not paying them a penny.

  • So. They do it for free then? Companies cost money. Companies are sponsered and owned by somebody. I think someone doesn't know much about how a company operates.

  • I think someone doesn't know much about unknownworlds entertainment...

Flayra is the owner of the company.(The guy on the left in this video.. aka Charlie.) They are being "funded" by Investors and their constellation program. NOT VAlVE

They also only have 4 in house developers(or somewhere around that number) So of course it's going to take a long time.. Most commercial games these days have teams of 100+ people.

  • Correction. SOME commercial games have teams of 100+ people. Most have a team of less than 20. Not all games are big budget games believe it or not.

  • When you say "SOME"... you mean every single game in the charts right now... correct?

    Cus that's what I meant.

Fyi This isn't a big budget game.. Seeing as you know soooo much about low budget games you shouldn't be surprised that it isn't finished yet. Yet for some reason you thought they were employed by valve and should have released the game 2 years ago when they were just throwing ideas around.

  • 2/10 would not be trolled again

go back to trolling /b/ and slashdot, assnugget

  • YOU GOT SERV'D There Nub.

  • Tard...

  • Thats nice stuff they make :)

  • Am I the only one seeing only minor progress on NS2? Seems to me like it takes ages...

  • Yea, i bet they need another year to finish with this pace

  • I'm placing bets on 1 and a half years from now. It seems realistic, allows for extra polishing time, and it happens to coincide with my graduation date. You see, I will then be able to build the monster gaming rig that this game so righteously deserves.

I'm also factoring in a small expansion of the art team. At this rate, it feels like media assets are going to take far longer than game mechanics (this is true of anything, but more so with UW's small team).

  • NS2 is looking similar to UT3... I like that. :D

Good job guys...I'm definitely going to buy that game. :D

  • When I got the mail, I had to sign in and post this comment.

I can't wait for this game, and now I'm surely gonna try to do your art test. Can't wait to see more of you guys!!! Keep it up.

  • insaaaaaaaaaaaane!

i would definately pay for this mod!

  • Good job, really really good job, can't wait to play ns2 *_*

  • we have to wait a thousand years to ns2 reach the finish line :( i so0 sad ...

  • Great!!!!

  • MOAR

  • I really, really hope they get the balance right this time.

NS1 was so fucking nice at the very start, but a few patches later it was far too easy for marines and on public servers aliens almost never won anymore because the balance was so fucked up from their patches.

But I really dont expect much from them. I will check it out when it is released, but my hopes are of course very low after Ive seen what was done to NS1.

  • When was the last version you played NS? It was something like this: 2.0 - Aliens won more than marines. 3.0beta, marines won more than aliens. 3.0 Final, aliens won more than marines. 3.1 aliens still won more than marines.

BTW, this is going from my experience playing on the Guns4back2school server.

3.2 is the most balanced version IMO.

  • I really dont remember the versions anymore, but last I played it was like 2 or 3 years ago. And back then the balance was totally fucked up still.

I played from the very first version up to I think version 2 (it started to suck then).

I never played on a single server. I always changed servers. I doubt you can tell the balance of a game if you keep playing on the same server anyway.

I think the biggest problem was the skill that aliens needed to be played successfully.

  • cont'd:

Aliens were much harder to play than marines and thus on public servers marines always won (unless the aliens had a little advantage, which made it much more balanced on public servers).

But when the marines had a skilled commander and people who folloed his orders, there was absolutely no chance for the aliens to win, unless they had a whole clan playing.

The balance changes just amplified this because marines got even more unchallinging to play.

  • I'm tired of waiting for this game, honestly.

Alls I hope for is that they keep bhopping in but make it easier to do (i.e. make the jump button continuously spam jump when you hold it).

  • Yeah, I hope they take the skill out of aiming too. That would be nice, not having to aim and all.

  • ...most people use mousewheel or a macro anyway, how is getting a jump's timing right a 'skill' if nobody treats it as such? I'm not really sure what you're getting at =/

  • Low spec pc with awesome visuals, good show there... Good show indeed!

  • UWE needs tons of $ so they can hire 20+ staff and steam roll the production of NS2.

  • again like the 10th time i have commented on this, great work guys. :D big fan!

  • Release date?

  • Thats a really nice engine

  • ow man awesome they got those cool fans with those cool shadows ow now I totally want to paly omg .... this sucks

  • It looks sweet.

  • I'm scrambling to finish life before this gets released, cause I won't be doing anything else for a long, long time!

  • yo guys you should probably make ns scrabble now to cash in because i bet you're going to need some more money to finish this neverending project

  • To be fair, you guys who say "2 years and this is all you have"...

On the one hand, yeah they have a huge amount left to do, but don't forget they haven't really been in full developement for 2 years... I remember reading that at some point they finally got an office and hired some staff; I don't think that was 2 years ago.

My 2nd point - 2 years isn't a long time really. It's a long time to wait for a game, but not a long time to be developing a game, when you haven't been working full time.

  • Why do people asked retarded questions? He specifically states this will increase their productivity and everyone is like "ZOMG JUST LIGHTING?" or "NICE BUT WILL IT HELP MAKE CONTENT FASTER?". Open your ears people.

  • i am glad they worked on a light engine instead of a game

  • Looks awesome, even more impressive with just 4 team members.

You will soon enough be showered in mine and everyone else's money.

Was obsessed with the first NS and can't wait to play round 2!

  • have you even began network code yet?

  • I love the glowing effect on the Hive and other Alien buildings!

    UW, hire more people!!

  • Errr, Hire more people so you could get the job done sooner. ;) I've been all giddy over this since you announced it!

  • FLAYRA IS THE NEW GOD!

  • wonder what the system requirements will be now, been playing ns1 for a very long time and I cant wait for the "new game" if you can call it like that.

  • OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! Wow, you did some amazing stuff with that engine. I hope all the work you did on tools means making actual content takes far less time =D

  • taking foooorever, hope the wait is worth it!

  • It's nice to see this cool engine and the lighting effects, seriously. But these guys are waaay behind, they obviously don't have any kind of schedule. It looks great but, that's all they have to show after all this time developing NS2?

4 guys in the dev team? OMG. By the time NS2 is done, we won't need this game because humans will already be living in space, fighting real life aliens.

  • Best. Comment. Ever!

  • lmao Flayra you are the coolest

idea: call up valve and release NS2 along with hl episode 3, like they did with TF2 on the orange box.

result: NS2 gets released in a timely fashion and valve + UW rake in some serious monster cash!

    food for thought!

  • Hey, your GUI looks very similar to UnrealEd. :)

  • i rember when i used to play the original natural selection, and it was a blast.

i cannot wait for this, keep up the awesome work guys!

  • O M G

  • I wub you guuuys <3

We want to see the end of this, beating my own personal expectations on every other game since I just loved NS1 so much. SC2, D3, WotLK, Mirror's Edge... nah!

Also I think the community is itching to get into your pa... I mean editor, so the mapping can begin ^^

  • I love how NS 1's artwork still looks great to this day. It just goes to show that art is one of the most important aspects of graphics.

  • NS Ftw :D

  • flayra wears abercrombie... that's awesome!

  • I love you! xD

  • Heroic job you're doing there guys, keep it up.

5 years of CS, 4 years of CS:S, 3 years of Quake, 1 year of UT, Day of Defeats, various smaller-genre MP's, MMORPG's...

...and yet I remember Natural-Selection pre-2.0 as my best MultiPlayer experience ever.

  • nice start, but lets wait and see gameplay, netcode peformence and stuff!!

    keep good work

  • You kids don't know what real games are like! back in my day we had pong, and it had pvp! take that you damned kids with your eye pods and sex robots! and stop stepping on my lawn!

  • They wrote a whole new engine... now that they have this up, things will move WAY faster.

  • They wrote a whole new engine? haha Where do you get this info? I do believe they are using a modified version of an existing engine (AKA they licensed a game engine and then modify it to their liking). I don't think anyone they have on their team has the experience to code an entirely new game engine, not to mention their budget is pretty tight and time is money. All people wanted was NS2...years later all we have is lighting effects. Maybe next year we will get an actual model!

  • the engine is custom... that means new, even if it was based of another engine its still "one-of-a-kind", am I correct? The word 'whole' should be removed from my first statement...

Regardless, neither flaming nor debasing criticism will speed things up. I like the way they have done things so far... yes, I would like to play it NOW, but I am willing to wait for quality. I think that most any game anymore has good enough gfx that its immersive and enjoyable-- its stuff like this that counts.

  • I have no plans to speed things up by leaving comments on youtube. Flayra will most likely never read these comments anyways. However, my point is that people just want to play NS2. Many people would of been happy with what could of been done with the Source engine. We were all happy with what was done with the HL1 engine correct? I feel they should of released to the Source engine, then thought about ways to profit from the game later on. We just wanted a pretty NS1 for the Source engine.

  • Dumbass.

  • "would HAVE", "could HAVE", "should HAVE"

    Fixed that for ya.

  • Our engine is 100% our own and written from scratch. That's the whole point of this video we uploaded (did you listen or just watch?).

  • @Gutter22 It must be fun to go around acting like you know everything but actually not knowing anything.

  • @ThePhatIndian It must be fun to go around to post worthless comments towards a comment posted 1 year ago. The only thing going for their engine is dynamic lighting. You will see after it is released what the actual limitations are.

  • @Gutter22 Your original comment had nothing to do with the quality of the engine or even the features the engine was capable of. The engine may be the most limited, beat down and shitty engine in the history of PC gaming, but that wasn't what my argument was about. Reading comprehension ftw. Better luck next time.

  • @Gutter22 BURRRRRRN!

  • My feedback is that Abercrombie and Fitch is an evil company that supports sweatshops to produce subpar clothing at extremely high prices.

Besides that, your website got hit by a ton of people due to your email and can't keep up, which I hope you'll fix soon.

The lighting looks amazing and I hope to see some interesting uses of lighting in levels (aliens destroying light generators or something).

Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see the final product!

  • Your website is dead guys. :/

  • I hope the dynamic infestation feature you demoed two years ago gets implemented.

Likewise hope that you don't base level design decisions on the basis of demoing the engine's capabilities, but rather on creating the eerie atmosphere of its predecessor.

Hope the gameplay also evolves to reflect the greater control on design you have this time around.

  • Wow, that's amazing!

  • Finally some progress, I guess the speculation that the game will never be released can be tossed away, because now we can actually see the gameplay.

  • CANT WAIT!

  • amazing amazing amazing amazing amazing amazing...

  • Amazing work, waiting with impatience the game, we are with you Unknown Worlds!

  • Looks awsome!! ill buy a new PC when it comes out worth the upgarde I needed

  • Wait, so you guys aren't using Source anymore?

This is some cool tech, but I thought the *game* would be alot further along by now...

  • That NS1 hive made me blow a load in my pants.

  • Finally a mod that goes in a differnt direction unlike COUNTER STRIKE SOURCE

  • This is a standalone game. It's not even based on the Source engine any more, they've switched over to their own in-house engine ("Evolution")

  • uh what?

  • do want ns 2 now

  • looks amazing guys Keep it up <3 Flayra

  • this game ever gonna come out?

  • Yeye, 4 ever waiting.

    Abercrombie T-shirt ?

    Like my one.

i see parallax occlusion mapping in the game ?

At the vents we have NO shadow ?

ohh, damn, we see the OLD hive :((

  • Damn dude I never expected anything to look that good.

  • That is some mighty fine lighting effects.

  • good job!

  • Amazing. Can't wait so see this in action.

  • I do have to agree with the other that the graphics shouldn't detur the gameplay. Visuals do look good although in multiplayer games the graphics are typically secoundary.

  • I think Flayra and the NS2 team are well aware of that.

  • framerate does matter

  • Thanks for the update Flayra...

Please just get those game mechanics done. Granted the lighting looks marvelous; it isn't gonna be so marvelous in 2 more years. Drop that game because your dynamics (although visually gorgeous) will become commonplace in the videogame world soon.

MECHANICS. GET AN ALPHA. SEEK COMMUNITY HELP FOR TEXTURES AND MODELS. DO IT!>

  • Wow, looks good. The only thing,,, it seems like the amount of pfs dropped down in certain places with all these unnecesary light effects and big textures... Please, remember, it doesn't matter the graphic quality if you can't get a decent amount of fps in game... Awesome, just tweak it and take care of the hardware community stats,,, we have shitty computers, mostly, so keep it in mind for the sales in 2012,,, you aberzombie balds rock! XD

  • the framerate is not something they will be worried about at this stage

  • Freaking awesome, its been long time since they gave an update but im glad to see they are actually working with it, bit shame they haven't done much with the models yet but i guess its better to finish working on the engine first anyhow. Thes lightings will be perfect for such atmospheric game like NS is.

  • Wow that's awesome work you guys are doing it's looking excellent =D I look forward to the release.

  • Looks Fair :D - See your enjoying the Dx9/Dx10 Code.

    Best of luck!

  • Hey hey hey, are those new concepts in the background i see there?

*gasp* as soon as that blind window open, it said it all "BREATH TAKING" great job guys GREAT JOB!

BTW, I freaking love that song in the beginning, anyway to release it?

  • Wicked, glad you guys like it!

  • Awesome, dynamic lighting! Bonus points for in-editor lighting. :D

  • i have a ati crossfire system :D i wanna see WTF is happening at 16 x AA :DD (NS 2 will support parallaxx occlusion mapping? )

  • Funky
