The scene with the motorists forming a procession absolutely brought tears to my eyes. I mean, this whole movie is extremely touching but I think this is one of the parts that probably touched me the most.
Great film. Watch in on HBO awhile back and said to myself that this is has got to be one of the best film i have ever seen. I cant say anything else cause this is such a wonderful movie.
This is my favourite scene in the movie. The only problem with it is the fact that the trailer is traveling on the opposite lane on a 2 way road, and suddenly, when the camera shows us the driver, we see something at 2:50 traveling on that lane, and in the opposite direction. If the trailer was using it, where did it went through? A very good movie, love how everyone shows respect to this difficult job. Kevin Bacon can do any role he´s given.
@TheSRalston if you notice the lines on the road, the yellow lines closest to the car with Kevin Bacon are broken - - -, vs the lines next to them which are solid ____. the broken lines mean that a car can pass another if there is enough space to safely do so. if it was double solid lines then you cant pass at all or if it was double broken then both directions of traffic can pass.
Also had to add this.. Mike Strobl agonized on not being "over there" with his brother Marines, so he took Chance home as a way to make up for it. In my own opinion of the countless officers I served with ( some great, some bad and many in the middle, Marines and Navy), I myself would have have felt safe going into combat with him. Yes, I'm not a Grunt on the ground... but he had that "air" about him. He would take care of you.
The scene at the funeral home moves me the most. Even though Chance was disfigured and his remains "not fit for view" LtCol Strobel still insisted that he made sure his uniform was right. And all the nameless people back at Dover ensured that it was, even the person putting together his ribbons.... I'm a retired Navy vet... Hope I am honered the same way when my time comes.
It's been over a year since I first saw the movie (I OWN IT NOW) and not a week goes by that I don't tell some one to go get this movie. To our BRAVE men and Women who have or are serving, My sincere thanks. To the families who have lost someone while in service to our country, you will forever be in our prayers.
The scene where he sits down with the other marines who served in different wars was nothing short of chilling in the subtlety and undertones present throughout.
Good day everyone. I am from India, I was deeply touched by this movie. People give their respects to the dead , though language and cultural differences may be there. Good contribution by everyone who has made a decent comment. Thank you.
Truly the most moving movie I have ever seen. The true respect, Honor and Dignity shown to a fallen hero, is truly deserved. Thank you too the Phelps family to allow us to share this with them. May God Bless Chance.
@bigboyjack21 Funeral escorts always turn on their headlights. Also, if you leave the church or mortuary, following the hearse, and drive to the cemetery with all the other cars, it shows you are part of the entourage. Bright stickers that read "FUNERAL" may also be given to you to put on your window shield. In some states, as long as it's safe to do do, you may be allowed to drive through stop signs, red lights, so your funeral party stays together until you all reach the cemetery.
@bigboyjack21 Also, it will hopefully stop other drivers from cutting you off from the line of cars, so you can all stay together. Finally, it can mean you're helping to light the way for the dead to get to the next world. In this case, I think it just shows that everyone's showing respect and wanting to help bring this soldier home. Note the trucker took his hat off. There was a time when removing your hat was a sign of respect.
The film is a much watch for anyone. How all the nameless people who painstakingly take care of the deceased once they arrive in Dover MD is the part that moves me most. Even the faceless person who ensures all the decorations and uniform are proper and perfect... since they are as much a part of him forever as his soul. As a veteran of 30 years I could think of nothing that would make me more pleased than to meet my shipmates in this way when my time comes.
The American public doesn't want the media to shove the Military and Wars down there throats. Sgt. Guinta isn't comfortable with the Congressional Medal of Honor. I wouldn't feel comfortable with the CMOH. I've never felt comfortable with the Combat Infantryman Badge that I received in Iraq. I was outside the wire a lot, but I was lucky. My vehicle was never hit by a bomb and I was never involved in a firefight.
@aamorri1 I'm comfortable with you having the Combat Infantryman Badge and I'm damned proud of you and the fact that you earned it. It doesn't matter that you were never killed or injured or involved in a firefight. You are a hero. You are my hero.
@aamorri1 I appreciate your thanks but, instead, please accept mine. You are the hero. And, I apologize that I just saw your response. Wear that Combat Infantryman Badge proudly.
This movie has impacted on me considerably. I saw it a couple of weeks back in a hotel in India and immediately brought the suffering of the people surrounding the fallen home to me. I used to visit the American cemetery in Manila and I could only think of the telegram and its effect for each Cross and Star of David in the cemetery. Thank you to all for this movie. I'm not an American but hell, this brings the losses home to me.
@deathstick16 It is not a stupid question. Yours is an insightful and sensitive question. Yes, it's symbolic and respectful. It's typical for any funeral procession to have the vehicle lights on. In this instance, the body was being transported and those passing by figuring out that a soldier was being transported were simply paying their respects. You're very thoughtful.
My brother joined usmc 2009 18 fab, a year ago, done with the training and all,he has been transfered to afghanistan 2nd infantry usmc this year, he doesnt really cares if he will come back home on a feet or in a box, all he said to me is that " its some one over there, your brother that has been fallen and its your duty to salute him and replace him,u will replace someone someday too " and it will be my pleasure to replace that fallen marine that has sacrified hes life so i could sleep,
i choke up every time i see this part in the movie, i have seen it maybe 10 times and it still impacts me just as much as it did the first time, this movie is a first class movie and every one should watch it, i have 2 brothers in the corp so this always feels personal when i watch it.
I have a son in Afghanistan now. I think of him everyday. I cringe when the phone rings and my heart skips a beat if I hear a knock on my front door. And then I have never been more proud of my boy. You stay safe brian..
Kevin Bacon is such an under-rated actor, simply the best....This movie gives you an idea how the military gives so much respect to our fallen brave warriors. Very touching movie.
I have served my country for over thirty years in the Army and Army Nat Guard. Now that I have retired I pass the torch to my Son to carrying on the tradition of serving this great Nation! its nice that in your country valiant servicemen scuh as the Marines are remembered and respected in this manner. Its too bad that in mine not everyone recieves such beautiful consolacion
I know it's just a movie...but a Marine should've been carried in a Cadillac Hearse because they deserve the very very fucking best our Marines. I would've driven right behind the motorcade in my Cadillac. : )
@Killjoy174 It is traditional for automobiles in a funeral procession to have headlights on. In this instance however, it's more a spontaneous, collective sign of respect. The fact that you noticed and asked is, I believe, respectful as well. God Bless.
Just finished watching this film in addition to the added extras on the dvd. I cannot lie. I went through at least half a box of tissues. I've had this movie in my possession via Netflix for a few weeks and had put it off because I knew what I was in for. I am not sorry that I finally got around to watching it. It is unbearably moving. It is a story that everyone should know and watch, and pass the word on.
It is an honor to know that this young man was my fellow American, and the dignified members of service and civilians who showed their most heartfelt respect for USM Phelps lends hope that there still is some humane decency left on this earth. God Bless you, and your comrades. My deepest respect goes out to all. Thank you for your service, Marine. Thank you General Strobl for sharing the experience. I know that I will never forget this story.
If only this happened more often. Regardless of anyone's views of war, always respect and honor the fallen. This was honestly probably the most powerful piece of cinema I have ever seen. Thank you Chance, and all our serving men and women.
@Murph1331 Should it matter what your view is on Iraq???My father was killed in Vietnam and I served from 82 to 88 and My brother did also,If you put your ass on line for America whther you survived or made The ultimate sacrifice please honor those that always do.PLEASE?????

I'm in High School right now, and we watched this movie in Military History. Usually, students in my class fall asleep, but I saw no one was sleeping while we watched Taking Chance.
This was one of the best scenes in the movie, when the passing cars switch on their headlamps and fall in behind the hearse, and, in effect, form a motorcade in honour of the dead marine. Couldn't stop crying.
watched it three times and will again. I know and have known many veterans and heard the stories of their lost buddies - it is and has been a privilege to listen to every one.
@eawoodard I have been in the military and by most part, not very prone to crying, but this movie will reach inside a strong person.... One of the most realistic and emotional movies of all time. Enjoy the realism and yes, when you feel like crying, just watch this movie...
@eawoodard I will pray for your brother and all the troops in harms way. My son is a Marine but is currently not deployed. However he just found out his neighbor, a fellow Marine, was killed in Afghanistan on 29 Jul. We all must pray for one another.
