Opeth is really the metallica of their genre. Some fans have been around since the first album and say the first 4 are the best, and the new fans who hadn't discovered the band till the black album or in opeth's case "blackwater park". New fans will argue that Opeth has only "progressed/evolved" and Heritage is their best album ever. As an old fan i'll just say I'm disappointed with what the band has become and would like to see a reunion with the original 4 members from the first 2 cd's.
@syclone1931 I agree and truthfully,I discovered them when they released Damnation but was was determined to buy their old stuff and I have to tell you that MAYH and Orchid are my favorites from Opeth...period.
Meh, that's just the personality he shows. I think Akesson is a lot like Lindgren personality wise. Though Akesson is a way better guitarist and not only guitarist, also a better Musician, he really shows creativity in the way Mikael wants it.
I don't know, I personally think Mikael and Peter rhythmically together were just so perfect and natural sounding. And while Akesson is (in terms of technicality) is a superior musician, his tone and sound is still different from Peter's I feel and as a result I think Opeth's sound has suffered a bit. I loved Ghost Reveries, but Watershed has to be my least favorite Opeth record to date. And it's also the first record without Peter or Lopez...
How on EARTH can Watershed be your least favourite Opeth album? In my opinion it's their best ever. But opinions are opinions, it's all about taste I guess.
By no means do I call it "bad" - but maybe I've become just so familiar with Opeth's sound and style that Watershed just sounds recycled to me. They made it a lot more Progressive, that's for sure - and I have no problem with that. But at times it seems like they were trying a bit too hard with that (the organ solos in burden..really?). And they could've done waaaay better with the guest vocal choice for Coil. Of course this is just my opinion.
Yeah, it's all about opinions. A reason for why I LOVE Waterhed is maybe because I actually started to love Opeth the week it got in the stores. So I never really was a fan when Lopez and Lindgren was in the band. I love pretty much everything from Opeth, but Watershed sticks out as the best for me. Not only are Fred and Axe doing great, but it has the best material also.
Also, I was one of the few that thought Ghost Reveries was their finest work since probably the days of Morningrise. A beautifully diverse album, that molded together all of what Opeth once was and now is. I guess I may have had a bit higher expectations this time around. Not to mention the songs were a bit shorter than I usually like, similar to Still life in length - but SL was a much better record in my opinion.
@Timetakesusall Still Life is my favorite record from Opeth because in my opinion the guitar riffs are the best Opeth has ever written and the whole album has a very dark and unique atmosphere, which you don't find in the later albums.
Sometimes I feel that Mikael may have taken Peter for granted a bit. Just because Mikael does about all of the song writing, does not mean that Opeth won't change for the worse should an old time member leave. Opeth won't ever be the same without Lopez or Peter! Their own unique styles really did aid in capturing Opeth's unique sound, and I honestly preferred both of them to their replacements.
Yeah I see what you mean. But the way I would like to see it now: It's done, they are gone, so you might just as well try to fully get into the new musicians.
This might sound like a weird request but if someone knows Peter I would like to ask him if he in the days of the Amiga Demo Scene where active as a musician called "Dirk"..
For real, man, Martin Mendez has got to be one of the most creative bass players in metal and is most definitely an integral/irreplaceable part of the band
@NightlightsFlame hey maan!!! you forgot LOPEZ!!! HES THE ONE WHO perfected the drum style of anders nordin! only 2 albums is lopez ever absent! the first and the latest!!!
@Pollero20 yeah i wanted to write the two martins but i guess i kinda combined their names ... disturbingly enough it is the same kind of naming as celebrity couples.
Peter is an unique guy... It´s tolerable, that he left, but a horror due to we will see him nevermore!:-( Does anybody know, what does he at presence????!!!He´s one and only, nonrecurring, kind and nice ...I love him!
change is good. incompetent, amateur level people aren't being recruited to fill the gaps in the band. something tells me this record is gonna dwarf their older material in certain ways. Opeth=YAY
I dont think the band will be harmed much from his leave. Micheal Akerfeldt is the genius behind their music and the arch enemy guitarist is indeed VERY good.
wow, either theres alot of dutch interviewers, or these are all done by the same guy. funny how dutch is the closest language to english(that and german) yet swedes speak better english than both germans and dutch, and in some cases than americans.
@lethalinjection666 Peter's English is pretty well... English!... can't really make out that Swedish tinge to his accent... it's really pronounced in Akerfeldt's English...
Peter + Mikael + Mendez + Lopez --> the heart of Opeth.
Fredrik + Mikael + Mendez + Axe --> the kidneys of Opeth

Martin was an average guitar player at best, and make any meaningful contributions. Mikael did all the song writings.
While I "like" him, I see Opeth as a much more talented band with the new drummer and guitarist, and their album Watershed shows this.
