I said this to my group of friends in world history class and they were laughing so hard that the teacher couldn't shut them up. Thankfully he is an awesome teacher and made me say in front of the whole class and everybody was cracking up until the end of class. Now there is an ongoing joke where I would say it at times that are not apropriate just to make the class laugh. My teacher gave me the nickname "le fromage"(if that's how you spell it) ever since.

You're right though - "Who cut the cheese?" is an American phrase that's come to mean, "Who farted?" They just translated it into French thinking that it was funny. Which it is, to a point.
