Ironically, Geithner - as president of the NY Fed - allowed/encouraged the use of credit default swaps and other off-balance sheet derivatives which crippled global credit markets. Then he was appointed Treasury Secretary by Obama.

We have had three recessions since Reagan reduced that top tax rate by more than 50% and the debt is higher now than it was with all pre-Reagan presidents combined and you cant blame Clinton's 8 for the debt. clinton signed signed bills deregulating the financial market right before he left office. bush did nothing to undo the deregulation (he had partisan control for 4 out of 8 years). lack of foresight or a simple of gauge of economics is what lead to the crisis. if people find low risk (mislabeled) high return bonds, obviously they will invest in them. deregulation by the government exacerbated the problem. and therefore, contrary to the right wing mentality, government regulation is helpful.

a surprising number of 'normal' people took loans they couldn't afford. this was due to the housing bubble. they thought that they could make a quick buck by taking loans out on houses and then flipping them for a higher price down the road. when the bubble collapsed, the loans became crap, and therefore initial low risk bonds became high risk.

well, if it was a prediction about the economy going down he would be right no matter what reason he used to predict it.
Its ironic the repubs said during the election that a bad economy was good for dems because people had more faith in dems, plus incumbant parties alwals lose during a bad economy

That aside, it would go down no matter what, and it will most likely go back down again because nothing will stop that in the short term no matter what is promised. Its just the state of the market right now. The credit crisis wont fix itself soon, companies are still cutting jobs and closing.
It will take time, what matters is whats done over whats said, and nothing will happen until Obama actually gets into office.
