@Revhead you are right about them being one of the first Aussie band to do a US tour. They were also one of the first to know the pain of touring and coming back broke. And I'm pretty certain Mark Kennedy just finished recording with Genevieve Chadwick this year.
(edited today) I used to go see these guys in concerts during the 70's and just out of high school. I got to know Chris in the late 80's. He is now a chiropractor and I see him as needed. Had the extreme pleasure of jamming with him on guitar and Sammy Gaha on drums at a party in Baulkham Hills in the late 1980's. I was in awe.
There were three times as many people congregating outside on the street listening than were at the party. They could hear us from 2 Km away apparently.
This is Ayers Rock in April 1975 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. part of the Melbourne "Concert for Bangladesh". There are other clips on youtube of the same gig: Ayers rock playing "Gimme Shelter", and the band Daddy Cool playing "Eagle Rock" and "Hi Honey Ho". AC/DC was also on the bill.
Actually got the orginal LP sitting beside me now. Saw them in Gymea pub Sydney excellent musos. Idiot camaeramen never get the guys playing lead right always focus on their faces not their fingers
You might be thinking of Russell Dunlop, who died in 2009. He spent a short while as drummer with Ayers Rock in 1976 (I think). Another brilliant musician and producer who's very sadly missed.
It's Ayers Rock. The DVD '1975, the year it all began' was spelled wrongly....and thankyou everyone for your comments and compliments. Love to y'all, Chris Brown
got this LP Big Red Rock as a sampler from my old friend Peter Karpin who worked for Mick Gudinski back then...he also gave me Chain Towards the Blues..wore out the needles on the old HMV...no wonder Abba never quite 'got me' a few yrs later.....sheesh
That was f'en awesome, i can't believe i found AYERS ROCKagain, i saw them live around 1975, and then i lived in North America for all of 76 and bought their album in Montreal, good ole Chris, Duncan, Col...
I recall this whole concert was televised in the 70's, but I have never been able to find any more footage, except this Lady Montego. I would love to see them doing The Big Red Rock and Boogie Woogie Waltz, again !
drumsontherange: Thanx...I remember him with Max Merret & the Meteors, & Murtceps..I think he went to England & joined a noted brass section....very nice player indeed.
Back in the mid-seventies I thought this band was great but now I see that they were just riding the wave of the West USA Coast hippy music of earlier times. Sorry but they are a band of the 70s that should stay in the 70s
I remember all these guys and friends and used go to most of their gigs...they were known at the time for being such professional muso's and gregsbad is so right about Mark Kennedy the drummer. Chris Brown was the lead singer.
Yeah, I think Mark Kennedy died not too long ago. He was one of those live life to the fullest kind of guy if you get my meaning . . . Chris Brown is still around and still playing music in his spare time, though he lost most of that hair.
chris lost his hair in the 70's!!!Didnt know abt mark thou he wasnt that old either, i think big goose from chain passed away too a couple of years ago, cld be a rumour tho, do you know wot band chris is in now?
Mark Kennedy is alive and Kicking Hard playing for the James Southwell Band, Leo Sayer and Kevin Borich. Saw him at Blues on Broadbeach with JSB,,,, they were AWESOME!!!!
