Although he's got the agility & a pretty nice voice, people will always prefer Wunderlich because the most obvious reason is that Fritz sings more naturally while Araiza sounds like he's doing ventriliquism:( It's obviously the technique he was taught. But honestly it separates him from those who sing more natural like Fritz & Pav:) I do notice that many Spanish singers(tenors)do this steady mouth & only the lip moves kinda singing. Try that when talking...it's awkward ain't it? Unnatural:(
@lastofdmelocchians Because speaking is not singing! The tongue makes the vowels and the lips shape them - no real reason to reset the mouth by moving the jaw. The latter would change the space inside and thus the quality. He is really great in the passagework - distinct and unflappable.
@lastofdmelocchians As part of the "people" I disagree with you!. Although I am a big admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, I prefer Araiza's voice. Araiza’s voice is richer in colors and expressiveness. Furthermore, you seem not to be familiar with the technique of Bel Canto. Lamperti once said, “A singer’s primary pronouncer is in the pharynx, NOT the mouth.” (I assume you know who Lamperti is, He is the author of The Technics of Bel Canto (1905). Araiza does it perfectly.
It's amazing to see maestro Araiza in his early 30s, with full agility and right extension to sing this role naturally, but yet with a lirico-leggero grip (check the awesome the timbre), rather than the total majority of Almaviva's, who are mainly tenori leggeri.
I particularly enjoy this aspect, as I like the belcanto roles - especially Rossini and Donizetti - sung with a rather metalic and somewhat not so light voice, with the great agility and fine legatos that are required.
Hace tiempo que no escuchaba este aria. Me encanta!.Lástima que el principio no se escuchó completo porq me gusta mucho el principio. Una gran serenata de Araiza
Very beautiful voice. Thanks for posting, I had no idea he ever sounded this good. I always thought his voice was pleasant enough, but evidently it used to shine.

Thank you so much for posting this, I want to see the Barber of Seville Opera so bad but can't find it anywhere. Again thanks

Someone uploaded a really good version from 1974 with Prey, Alva and Berganza. Completely.
Just search for Barber of Seville part 1
or so and you should get the overture and links to the other parts.

The voice is not always steady, but it is incredibly gorgeous, what a plangent, urgent, lyric tenor.
hightenor123 4 years ago
It is mainly unsteady because of the recording. You should hear him on the CD.
