  • Great video. Your model seems comfortable and easy to work with. The boots are a great idea, like you said it's about making the model safe too.

  • Ben, thanks for sharing your videos with us. I have enjoyed watching them and have picked up some additional knowledge about exposing for ambient light and using the flash to expose the model. I am looking forward to see more of your videos. I wish you continued success.

  • man well done....

  • If you dont mind to share, what lens did you use and what setting? thanks in advance!

  • @lbanzphotography I used non-pro glass in this one:

    Nikon 50mm f/1.8

    Nikon 55-200mm f/3.5-5.6

Settings varied as the light was constantly changing. I can say that during the bright daylight, I was shooting at or slightly faster than sync speed. As the sun dropped, I opened up my aperture and slowed my shutter until I reached the point to where it was too dangerous to get sharp images, which I then bumped my ISO as the last resort.

  • @lbanzphotography hi!! what triggers use? what sync time?

  • @canonistul74 Paul C Buff Cyber Syncs. For the daylight shots, I was at sync speed for my camera which is 1/250th. I even went a little above when I could

  • Nice Video!!! Thanks , was very helpful

  • the model just kinda always looks weird at the camera! lol

  • You are awesome Ben...

  • have watched many of your videos. this one like the others very nice,.... but this one had a little something extra! your calmness and gentle naration along with the very well suited music really aided in a very thought provoking look at what all was being done during this shoot. it has a very professional quality to it making it very easy to watch and enjoy. kudos to the videographer and editor!

  • Great video, but I hate that models face. The same look every single photo, looks like her, "I'm board get me out of here" face .

    Nice lighting though.

  • Helped me a lot! Thanks!

  • Dudes gotta slim down.. damn.

  • please do stereosounds for talking in the future..this is horrible with headphones

  • would be nicer if the horizont is straight

  • I want more :))) thanx fo your videos!!

  • Hey .. it was extremely good technique... good job..!! and thanks for the video.:-)

  • Check into the Alien Bee 400 lights and the new Alien Bee lithium battery power unit. Together they are about the price of a Nikon SB900 or Canon 580 EX II. They give much more power and they recharge to full power in less than a second. You can use those Cyber Syncs to adjust the power level too, if you get the Cyber-Commander. There's a good reason to use them instead of those overpriced Pocket Wizards.

  • @scottelly2

I was equally excited with the new Mini Vagabond LiOn battery pack. My only issue is the AB-400 is only slightly more wattage than a Speedlight at full power. The faster recycling time is a definite plus

  • I'm sorry to be nasty to you. I actually have cybersyncs and they are pretty awesome. I just got pocket wizards and am really wondering why. Also love the elinchroms. Great choice. You work is pretty good with speedlights. Must be awesome with quadras.

  • @YIMMA996TT

I don't ever think I'll be able to afford a set of Profoto lights. I do have a set of Elinchrom Quadras that I cautiously bought after shooting strictly with speed lights for several years and only after my business was stable enough to justify it.

I love the cybersyncs. They are affordable, reliable, and have a build quality that suits my needs.

  • @YIMMA996TT

Man you are MEEEAN! This guy is an awesome photographer and was nice enough to put this video up here to help people out and you just want to make fun of him. I'm SURE HE DOES have $8000 lights because he's obviously awesome at what he does, let's see some of your work and let's see you helping people out!

  • great videos, any post processing involved?

  • @MYTRB Just some minor color processing, sharpening, and contrast added

  • Thank u.. This was very informative and the results of your work are beautiful!!

  • Great tutorial man. What is the height of the light stand? And how big is the umbrella? Thank you, I have learned a lot from you.

  • @cgioris These were your average 9' manfrotto stands. Umbrella was a standard 43" Convertible

  • Your work is truly amazing and you have inspired me to take my flash off my camera - Yippeee - and the results I am getting are nothing but amazing!

  • thnxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    iLoved !!!

  • Thank you for the video...very inspiring! Thanks! :)

  • simply ........AWESOME!!!

  • where can i buy the same lighting kit? ;)

    -PCC

thank you, love the techniques . <3

  • I've tried doing this with my off camera flash (lumopro) but whenever I expose for the ambient light F-stop, the shutter speed drops TOO low to get the flash to bring out the model? Am I doing it wrong?

  • @wildone106 Make sure that your Flash AND your Camera are on manual mode. When shooting within the confines of Sync Speed (1/250th) for MOST DLSR's, shutter speed will control ambient exposure while Aperture and Flash Power controls the exposure of the model. You stated your shutter speed drops too low. I am confused to what you're asking as the slower the shutter speed (Lower the number) the longer the curtain stays open, hence more light is allowed in.

  • @bigbs4 Yep I always shoot manual, maybe I got it backwards then I was using the F-stop to control the ambient and the shutter speed/flash for the model lol

  • Thanks for share this video.

    Simple equipment with beautiful result.

    I wanna try this.

  • I have a Nikon d80. Could you please list me what lighting equipment you used?

I have sb600 also which lens would did you use and recommend.

  • @lbanzphotography Head over to David Hobby's Strobist.com and read section's "Lighting 101" and "Lighting 102".

For this shoot I used the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. It is one of the least costly lenses on the market and offers us that shallow DOF for around 130USD.

  • bro, what lens is that ? the 105 2.8 ?

  • @catalin205 These were mere budget lenses including the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 and the 55-200mm f/4-5.6

  • @bigbs4 wow very nice, I own both of them too :P

  • @catalin205 wow very nice, I own both of them too :P

  • Hey, do you have any suggestions for any flash that I could by for my canon rebel xsi to do a shoot like this? Please be specific. Anything around 100 dollars or less. Thank You.

  • @sergey94102

I highlight this in my Basement Strobist Episode 1 video. Since we are shooting in manual mode, all we need is a flash that has variable power settings and a PC jack to connect a radio trigger. Any old Nikon, Canon, or other flash will work. Search you local used camera store or head over to Ebay.

A good option for a new flash close to your budget is the Vivitar 285V. You can get these from Adorama, B&H Photo, or Midwest Photo Exchange.

  • when i go past 125th half of my picture is completely black

  • @joecoz26 What Camera Body are you shooting with? Some older cameras do have a sync speed of 1/125th. Also, what settings are you shooting with? ISO, Apeture, etc.

And what type of strobes or lights are you using?

  • @bigbs4 I have a canon 550d I found out my problem it goes to about 1/200th second now since I figured out what i did wrong. Thanks for your help

  • how do you meter the flash? im shooting a canon, but im using a nikon sb800(just barrowed) :D

  • @psalmxider

Your camera's built in Light Meter is only good for getting a general idea on the Ambient Exposure. You meter the flash by adjusting its power as well as balancing with your Aperture and ISO

  • how do you amped up your shutterspeed to 500?, it wont allow me w/ the flash on it. great vid man. thanks.

  • @MrCioteks We are going for a Strobist approach which encompasses the art of using off-camera flash to obtain studio quality lighting. Getting the flash off the camera is the first step. Whenever we have our flashes On the camera, they detect the flash and limit our shutter speed to the camera's sync speed which in most modern DSLR's is 1/250 of a second. We cheat this by getting our flashes Off the camera.

  • @bigbs4 thanks a lot ben. you are a great help. keep it up.

  • I love the last shots in the sunset, your model look absolutely gorgeous.

  • Your awesome!!!!

  • Nice video..thanks! I live near the Great Salt Lake. I usually shoot with natural light, but am wanting to learn how to use artificial light for cool shots like this! I'm not sure if you answered this in previous questions on earlier pages...but I'm curious what lens you used. Thanks!

  • @CallZeroG This particular shoots was done with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and the Nikkor 55-200mm. I shot these with budget lenses to show that you can get pleasing results regardless of lens you use. happy Shooting!

  • @bigbs4 Hey I was wondering if you can help me choose a good speedlite like yours but for Canon. Any suggestions? Thnx

  • @sergey94102 Any old speed light that has a Manual Mode and a sync port will work regardless of the brand.

  • Great video, found this really helpful and it was interesting to watch too!

  • sweet

  • Videos like this makes me wanna shoot creative pictures even more :) Amazing what you can get out of a single flash. I wanna try stuff like this! What model flash did you use for this shoot?

  • Great model in Wellies. Good demo with one light. Big thankyou.

  • GOOD SHOTS!!

  • Inspirational indeed....I'll be breaking out the SB800 this weekend! Great work, Ben!!

  • bigbs4, just tell me how to adjust two Exposure ?

did you use light meter also?

  • bigbs4, thanks for sharing of your amazing video, honestly did you use any image processing, like lightroom or photoshop cs5? or this is your real image shot taken?

  • @sharagim1

I used minimal post processing in LR and PS. Mainly contrast, tone, and curves adjustment. The big thing is to nail your exposure in camera. I make a personal rule never to adjust the exposure slider more than a half stop.

  • My question is how did you get the camera to focus in the low light?

  • Great shots Ben. One question. How big is your umbrella? I have a 33in and want to get a 60in for better coverage.

  • great video! may i knw what seting do u use? iso? s/s? apertur? thanks..

  • @heidizam

The settings I were constantly changing as the Ambient exposure changed every few minutes as the sun went down. Remember when you shoot with flash or artificial light, we are dealing with 2 exposures instead of just 1. Aperture and Flash Power control Model / Subject Exposure and Shutter Speed controls Ambient Exposure (in this case the setting sun). ISO balances Aperture and Shutter out. I dislike noise, so I shoot the lowest ISO possible at all times.

  • Beautiful shots! Thank you for showing us how you did it. =)

  • Thanks for this video. Very helpful. I have a photoshoot coming soon and I only have a 480ex ii and umbrella/lightstand. So I'm hoping I might keep some good shots with just that and my camera. Also...I liked this video for the ending. lol MadTv. :)

  • Thanks Ben. Very educational and inspiring. Can't wait to test out my speedlite and umbrella!

  • suscribing to your channel you will be my new teacher!

  • its fan

  • Thanks for sharing Ben, I loved the video!

  • the lens flares sucks!

  • hey ..i've seen much hotter girls on " 69pron.tk" and its free to join there..

  • Amazing stuff, where can I get that light stand?

  • Man you rock with this vid, just one thing, the music volume doesn't allow me to hear what you say properly, but yeah! you do it great, im looking for some vids as background information to my first beach shoot with models, it's just fine for me cause i've the same strob equipment!

  • @atento611

I apologize for the audio. The interface I recorded the narrations with only allowed me to record my voice in a mono channel which defaulted to the Left Side. If you are not viewing with stereo speakers or headphones, or the balance is shifted all the way to the right, you won't here the narration. I have consulted with my sound guy and all Future videos won't have this problem.

Again I am sorry for the inconvenience.

  • great video!

  • Is the Canon 580ex II similar to the Nikon flash used here? I want to achieve these kind of photos with my Canon 7D, and just-ordered 580ex II.

  • heck out my video with title: MAKE MONEY JUST BY USING YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA

I am going to show you how to make money just by using your digital camera and submitting your photos online.

  • Hi, you used Cybersync CST transmitter right, i just want to know whats on the speedlight? is it the CSRB+ CyberSync™ Receiver Plus - Battery Powered?

    Thanks

  • thanks for the video... mad tv ftw! hahaha

  • Nice work, great advice especially for those wondering how to get these sort of shots with less then what most might expect to need on location. Light being almost everything it isn't everything. I'm glad you pointed out the simple yet not well known fact that you can use light while using your imagination to create really great shots. I'm wondering if the shots you previewed were straight off your drive or photo manipulated at all. Just wondering, not especially important. Nice work! Thanks

  • Hi, thanks for your video. it was an eye opener for me, nice video work showing your setup. I am new to photography and have a Nikon D40x with a SB600 speedlight. 55-200 nikor lens. Guess I'm gonna need that diffuser umbrella, which one is the one you used in this video? I am truly amazed! Great pictures, and assures me i don't have to shell out the big bucks for strobes. Thanks.

  • Nice vid man, im a rookie at photography n was wondering if i do that set up and lets say i have pics underexposed a bit would i b able to fix my exposure in lightroom3? Thanks.

  • @WESTWOODBEATS

The Exposure Slider in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw is a powerful tool that can be used to assist you in exposure corrections assuming you are shooting RAW.

However, I would make my absolute best attempt to get an appropriate exposure in camera. I make it a personally goal and policy to never to need to adjust exposure in Lightroom more than a quarter to a half of a stop. More than that and you're asking for trouble. Remember you have 2 exposures. The flash's and the ambient

  • @bigbs4 yes im shooting RAW. i just wanted to make sure if i try your set up ill b able to get some descent shots. if i mess up my exposure i can try to save, tweak it a lil bit in LR so thats great. thanks man keep up the good work im a fan.

  • @bigbs4 lolo

  • nice job. Sorry to see you lost much of the colour of the setting sun in the photos. The colour was beautiful in the video. Perhaps 1/2 stop underexposed would have brought the colour back. Any ideas on that?

Model was beautiful. I know she must have a great smile but your editing of the photos didn't reflect that. That's cool. She's super hot.

  • @cdnbigfoot

Thanks for the insight. I've never used a light meter other than one built into my camera and the one in my brain. I believe I was close to 1-1.5 stops underexposed for the ambient, but obviously it wasn't enough. One of the downsides of shooting digitally is the decreased dynamic range our cameras have, making it ever so important we get our exposures more spot on.

I should have paid better attention to my histogram and not the image on the LCD screen...

  • Your model is not very smilling .....

  • well that's weird my Nikon speed light syncs up to 1/4000 of a sec with my D90

  • @a6km

That is only if you are shooting on TTL and using Nikon's High Sync FP mode. When utilizing the camera and flash in Manual mode and triggering with a radio trigger excluding the new Pocketwizard TT1 or TT5, 1/250 is what you'll be synced at without seeing shutter curtains appearing in your frame

  • lowered expectations LOL

  • Ability44 sent me.

  • this is so incredibly helpful. thanks for taking the time out to record this and post it.

  • great work...thanks for the vid....interesting comment about not buying the sb-600 instead buying any of the sb- 24, 25, or 26....i guess throwing money around is not always the best thing to do...thanks again....

  • Great! Loved the video, Nice to see a nifty 50 on there (I am a canon man and love my 50 f1.8!) Its interesting you say that used flashes will do what is likely to go wrong with a off camera flash as they get old and how long should they last?

  • Nice vid....good model too.. :-)

  • Great shots man!

  • Great shot, I almost always use the umbrellas myself, sometimes I use barebulb though, but I am always very careful with the shadows they tend to create.

  • Interesting that you mentioned the shutter speed at 500 and that will leave a black bar. If you know this ahead of time, and realize how much of a crop you will need to do in post... You can use it as a creative tool... Thank you.

  • Hi!..I would like to know, what lens are you using for the sunset photos?

  • @staticro19

    Nikon 50mm f/1.8 and the Nikon 55-200mm f/3.5-5.6

  • @bigbs4 consumer level lenses on a high-end body? Interesting..

  • @bigbs4 you have to have the 50mm 1.8 :D

  • This one speedlight set up is exactly what I was looking for, great video. Keep up the good work man.

  • Gorgeous photos !!!! Very informative video, thank you.

  • Dude, Great tutorial! Thanks!

  • Dude, This is freaking amazing!!!! I didn't know a speed light could look so good!!!!

  • Great Video, Great Shots..... Cudoes

  • thanks for the great video, really liked the singing at the end

  • The result at 3:14 is realy good. What type of lens you're using?

  • Thanks. a lot.

  • great video man! i learned a lot. hope you make more!

  • Hi, Have you tried a gel on the flash to produce a warmer light (like a cto 1/2 or cto full) closer matching the ambient ? I'm just curious if that would work good. Thanks!

  • Asian marriage **busizz4me.info**

  • "Lowered Expectations...!" lolol

Just have to tell you, that was a great video. It was concise and informative.. You covered even what to meter for!

    Great work!

  • rock'n roll man! your video inpired me.I just ordered stand and umbrella :-)

  • These pics are great! Ive seen shots that use 2 or 3 lighting sources that are boring compared to these. awesome job

  • awesome stuff bro.

  • Great bro! cool and good photography!

  • Great tips man. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you for showing us your no-nonsense approach to taking great photos with a simple setup. I think your opinion about breaking the sync speed rule has its merits. Good on you Big Ben. Cheers!

  • I wouldn't want anything i own sitting out in the "great" salt lake, Awesome video, Props to anyone that actually makes the salt lake look good, good thing there is no smellovision

  • @asigravitate27

Depending on the time of year, it isn't always that bad. However. Extra caution and proper sandbags are needed to help preserve your equipment. I usually keep my nicer SB-800 and newer speedlights in my bag and use the old SB-25's, etc. on the water in the event one takes a dip.

And always be sure to clean your light stands and anything that touches the ground/ salt water since it will corrode everything. - I learned this the hard way

  • again thanks for sharing, i hope you can keep posting more videos to show us your work!

  • You are a champion!! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Great video

  • lowerd expectations lol

  • Thanks for all the tips, I've learned a lot!

  • Good stuff there Ben!

  • This was a little helpful. It takes me a while to retain the info. Thanks.

  • model is hot! i bet she's married.
