Holy crap how did I miss this video? Thank you for speaking about this. It is true: we must never forget. I'm so glad Shmuel got to Israel & you got to meet him. OMG the ED thing...yeah I have similar struggles about this too. :( Much love, precious sister of my soul! Xoxox
Also, when my host grandfather would tell the stories, he would say, "The Germans did such-and-such," and one or the other of my host sisters would gently say, "Babay ["grandpa" in Tatar], it was the Nazis, not the Germans." And he would correct himself. They all made a huge effort to remember that distinction. Like you, I wish more people would pay attention to things like that.
Thank you for this. I really liked hearing about your grandparents. :) My host grandfather in Russia was Tatar and had been in 4 different concentration camps in Ukraine when the Nazis got there. He escaped 4 different times, only to be put into Soviet punishment battalions each time for "being a traitor" (escaping capture, which supposedly meant you were a Nazi spy). He was also in the Siege of Stalingrad. I got to record his stories before he passed away. It is important to remember.
in 2010 i spent Yom HaShoah at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. It was an incredible experience. several survivors were on hand to share their stories.
P.S. -- Yom HaShoah is also my birthday so it is always an issue very close to my heart. <3
