@darraghtank its for the spring that pushes the bullets...
.. the spring us narrower like a normal ak mag spring,
this gun is the russian 1st generation of underwater gun they now have 2 and 3rnd gen guns..
the newest can fire on land and in water with the same effect, and feed both types of ammo from the same magazine.. the new ammo is normal 5.45/39 ammo but with a special underwater bullet about 55mm long 2 1/4 inch ..
Don't kid yourself. This weapon was designed to defend Soviet ports when there really were attacks and suspicious activities under water. They still invest a lot of money in defending ports under water because how hard would it be to float a bomb into a port at night and attach it to a ship, then detonate it as the ship is pulling out with a full load of cargo. 10Kg of semtex or homemade explosives would be plenty to cause a catastrophe. We are always at war in one form or another.
Yes there are.... Russia has an elite group of frogmen that I think are a part of the navy, other groups like special Spetsnaz operators also use underwater firearms.
Why would the Navy want to copy that gun? What makes it better than a spear gun that probably costs less, makes less noise, has a larger projectile, and weighs less..
now you must ask yourself:whats the point of making a gun that shoots underwater but fucks up when your out of it? Did russia declare war on the gungens or crab people?
The reason for frogmen with this type of weapon is to deal with enermy frogmen attacking or spying on your naval ships.simple.You may also ask why train dolphins to patrol naval bases
It's also useful against said dolphins as well. (And I read in russian-language sources that it was used so by soviet frogmen at least in Nicaragua). You may read about "US Navy marine mammal program" in Wiki. Dolphins and seals are large, fast and dangerous when trained and equipped for anti-frogmen missions. I think it's difficult to fend off or kill military dolphine with a knife or spear gun, machine gun being more suitable piece.
Like the other gent said: it is for the interdiction of underwater threats against fixed or anchored naval targets for to facilitate the assault on the very same assets of one's enemy.
If I recall, I beleive that they actually made a pistol as well of the same design. Also, HK makes a pistol with 6 or 8 seperate sealed, water tight breaches and barrels for underwater usage.
It can fire out of the water, but the power is reduced and it's not as effective. It is also not recommmended to do that much wit this weapon becasue it could damage the mechanism after some time.
very cool

As if the USNAVY couldn't design an underwater gun if they wanted to.
Apathian 2 years ago
Why would you want to fight underwater on a large enough scale to demand mass production, anyway?

Can civilians buy this gun?
BrandonRonPaul 3 years ago
Civilians can't buy it. because they don't want it to get into hands of US NAVY, that will copy the gun :P

Yes. After the pistol magazine is empty it has to be sent back to the manufacturer for reloading.

picture shooting that out of water, with all that power you're taking someones head off.
Ghostcavador 5 years ago
It's not designed to fire out of water, and it most likely would mess up the gun.

Thats pretty strange though, I figured that they'd just increased the velocity on the gun to make it shoot under water... Hmm.
Ghostcavador 3 years ago
unfortunately, if the round has a high enough velocity, it will shatter as it hits water. otherwise they'd just use high velocity AK47s
