We were lucky to have the 6 player version in our Arcade...me and a bunch of my friends would spend our hard earned law mowing money every Saturday on this beast...good f'n times for sure.
I was apparently lucky, it seems; I wanted to play this ever since reading about it a month earlier in Nintendo Power (June 1992) and on my first time doing so I not only got to play as Storm but also finished the game (getting the 2nd highest score; there were all six players active)!
I love how this game (unlike so many others) actually offers an inkling of how devastating Storm's powers can be! ;)
This is the game that made me fall in love with Nightcrawler, lol, even if his power was misrepresented. I never played Wolverine after trying him once. Waste of credits with his special :|
Cyclops had a nice special, too, but I was a moron as a child and didn't understand why I had to punch things as Mister Eyebeams.
i remember once playing the 6 player version, i remember also having problem whit a kid who wanted play but the only spot free was the one were you play as dazzler, and he doesn't like it so he stayed there waiting for some of the others to run out of coins, and it was hilarious because he waited so long that his mom come from him before he could play, good times of yore
LMFAO! I think the only time I got to play this with a full 6 players I got stuck as fucking Dazzler! That was the only aspect of this game where they kinda dropped the ball- I mean they could've put in Psylocke, Rogue, Jean Grey... even Jubi-fucking-lee would've been better. Still, this was literally the beat-em-up to end all beat-em-ups; after this it was bascially all 1-on-1 fighters in the arcades.
They don't make like they use to.I miss the old school games like this. working together with people you don't even know to beat a game you all like awesome stuff
anybody remember how the cyclops and jubilee players would get screwed because they were on the ends and it was hard to see the screen/ control your character? also needs more "Welcome to DIE!"
hell yeah that would of done good on the home console.Kinda 2 d like street fighter 4 but have them look like this but better backgroud and detailed graphics for the heros. Also have sum cool other characters in it.Yep I remember this game from Peru in 98,was awesome
Ia ask myself the same question... Turtles in TIme became a masterpiece and the best TMHT game EVER MADE! It could've happened the same with X-Men Arcade game!
Yeah Konami only put TMNT Turtles in Time and Sunset Riders for SNES and Sega Genesis, they didn't put The Simpsons arcade game for SNES and possibly Genesis, but instead we got shiity Simpsons game's by Acclaim.
Yeah I waited forever for them to do an SNES port of this. They should SO do an HD remix (or fuck, a straight port) for the modern consoles now that TVs are widescreen
I worked at an arcade in Thousand Oaks, Ca. called 'Tilt'. We had this machine, the 6-player version (there was a 4 player conversion mod). One busy weekend, I turned the difficulty up to 8 (the highest). I watched 6 people dump something like 8-10 dollars each trying to finish it. The must've spent 3 dollars just fighting Magneto at the end. Never saw a videogame make so much money all at once. Never turned it up that high again, cause I'm not that mean, despite my District manager's urging to
only arcade game i ever put enough quarters into to beat. I was an arcade rat though, every weekend. I was and am a video game junkie for better or worse lol.
You probably know more than anyone here on the Tube how many requests I get, but since it's a fellow VGM guy, I'll keep it in mind if I come across it.
It's too bad there will never be a home conversion of this with up to 6 players. When Konami had the license for this, the home systems at the time were not powerful enough to handle this game. Now that we have game systems that can handle perfect translations of all these licensed games, the companies that made them don't have the licenses anymore.
Yeah, all these games have super moves that drain your power. Otherwise, there's no challenge - you could just use your super moves continuously without dying, if that were the case.
But I was just playing the game right now,and I saw the Select Character screen is different than mine. So maybe this is an updated fan-made version or an upgraded official version?
Yes, you could! There were two versions of the arcade game: one was a standard four-player cab in much the same vein as Konami's TMNT titles. On the character selection screen you then chose from the 6 characters.
The other version was a thing of beauty: it had 6 sets of joysticks/buttons, one assigned for each character. It was also TWO monitors wide, giving it a "wide-screen" effect. I think Ninja Warriors also had a two monitor setup...
Also, if you look carefully at the action in this vid, you can make out a very slight "seam" down the center of the picture. That's probably the middle of where the two monitors were connected.
I remember playing this is the arcade. It was loads of fun. I never heard the music though because there was just too much noise. Goddamn, I miss arcades... T_T
There still is a cabinet at the boardwalk arcade in Santa Cruz, CA as of around January '08. The sound is broken and Nightcrawler is broken as well, but my friend and I still pumped it full of quarters for nostalgia sake.
