The only way to fight the lion is to stand up to it face to face. I live in rural northern michigan, but if I was the woman's neighbor, I would have gotten right out there and built my own raised beds and hope others around her would have done the same just to show face to Mr. Rulkowski.

Yes, we need to get laws changed. It's horrible that it's okay to dump chemicals on our front yard to grow grass (a weed) but it's not okay to grow healthy veggies. And shame on the neighbor who complained. Maybe one day she'll be so poor she'll need to grow her own food but can't, and she'll need to beg for food. It would be fitting. I happen to live in the type of neighborhood where about 90% of the neighbors would complain. Sickening. This is one reason why I'm leaving the burbs!

Europeans often comment on the dreary leaden atmosphere of American suburbs. Well, here's why: a dreary lifeless atmosphere is a legal requirement! , How stupid are the lawmakers anyway? Biodiversity is the key to our long term survival on this planet.
In England where I live, in Europe generally, this is unknown. In my neighbourhood--not so different looking from John's-- people grow everything. And some keep hens! (which btw are fine and quiet and give you an organic egg for lunch!)

I just called the mayor and you should to there number is 248.691.7410. I think that we need to work hard for this woman so she is not going to jail for a tomato.

I hope Julie's issue brings attention regarding Victory Gardens and more states allow and encourage it. Best Wishes to Julie and her supporters. :0) Thanks again for your video!
Oh my gosh!!!! Thank you so much for telling us about this. It is amazing in a time of people losing their jobs and homes this would become an issue. She should be praised not given stress over her garden. Isn't Obama from MI? Didn't she plant a garden in the lawn of the White House? Guess, she won't be making one in MI when they get back.
Such a great idea and now is a perfect time to do it. It was recommended during the World Wars I and II, even in the 70's. Why not now?????
If you live in a HOA, comply with the rules you explicitly agreed to comply with, or work within the HOA to change them, fine. But no one, ever, should have to ask permission to grow a garden on any part of their property when it's just private property . . . the city is not owner of your property. Be peaceful, do what you want to do. To hell with anybody who thinks they control you.
the point that he is making is possibly a little incorrect. while there may be some cause to worry about growing veg being illegal, in this case that is not the reason they prosecuted her. it has more to do with the eyesore of the planters/dead plants in the fall. moreover, the fact that it was in the front yard is the main point. there is no issue with planting in the back. however, i do believe that the gov wants to make all of it illegal. thats why i plan to move to costa rica asap!
I was a city planner for 10 years. I have a masters degree in city planning and was a planner in a suburb of Chicago and another midwestern city. I left government because I worked with a lot of bitter bureaucrats who saw their "power" as giving them a measure of self-worth. Instead of working with people these bureaucrats take pleasure in saying "no." Pathetic.
Ok... having looked at the photos of her front lawn it is certainly neat and organized... but.. given it was the front lawn I probably would have made the garden an ornamental distribution rather than standard raised beds in order to avoid complaints from neighbors. Only half the lawn is raised beds and they are low beds at that. The walmart raised bed material would have been outstanding "edging" for an ornamental ly distributed vegetable bed.
I agree, gardening is Art and it is Therapeutic. ... Oak Park, Michigan locking up a person for growing vegetables... tisk-tick. It's crazy. They should reward her for being proactive and responsive to the times! Parched lawns in middle class neighborhoods give little back or forward. There is a poetry to every garden which bonds people together - Families, Neighbor's and friends share what comes from efforts and their earth.
I'm so glad you are raising awareness about this Oak Park situation. When I read the story the other day I couldn't believe my eyes...our government is out of control on so many levels
In spite I'd start a campaign in that town to make raised bed gardens and make sure everyone grows something else. Either they can jail the whole town or they can realize how silly this entire idea is.
A fine would be bad enough, but JAILTIME? America has got some waking up to do, I think.
you should watch "Meet your Strawman" and "The Occult World of Commerce". understand we no longer have the government we thought we had. it is a fraud and we are not subject to "Code" laws under common law which is what we should be using and what this country was founded on. if we dont understand this, we will be playing the game with their fradulent rules where they control the game. dont let these criminals get away with this. please watch the films! may they empower you and all of us.
What? You can't grow vegetables on your own property? That's crazy. I can never understand American politics. The politicians are not on the same page as the people who elect them. The country is going backwards.
What an awesome idea, John, to encourage all the supportive neighbors to plant a veggie garden in their front yards to show solidarity and "suitability"! Thanks for posting this video and for relaying all the information so that we can do everything possible to help this woman and help bring the "leaders" (and I use the term loosely) of her town to their senses. It's surreal to think how this absurdity is juxtaposed with Casey Anthony getting a Get Out Of Jail Free card. Unbelievable!
What about a vegetable seed ball bombing campaign organized by people who live near this lady? Rain down seeds on all the government buildings ground in the area.
It is similar to what India faced with imposition of the salt tax during British rule, only S 510 extends control over all food in the US, violating the fundamental human right to food. S 510 would give Monsanto unlimited power over all US seed, food supplements, food and farming.
Senate Bill S510 Makes it illegal to Grow, Share, Trade or Sell Homegrown Food S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the US.
can't you somehow engage mrs michelle obama? she is promoting growing vegetables. yes, the vegetables in white house are probably in back yard, but anyway - the idea has to be spread to everyone not restricted!
I told you about the light in the front of the house being stollen, well my city is charging us more money for property tax for growing a garden in front of our yard "home improvents" and they are taking us off of a flat rate for water and charging us with a water meter. I am the only one in my block that has a raised bed garden in my front yard. I know being sent to jail is worse then what I have gone through but, this shit does happen.
This is absurd and ridiculous. I wish everyone would start growing food in there own front yards(or back yards), there are so many benefits to doing this. Its sad when appearance and just overall shear stupidity trumps logical common sense.
I don't have a back yard, and my garden IS in my front yard. I have 4 cucumber vines, 4 mild pepper plants, and 16 tomato plants. If I had more room, there would be more. I have watched your videos and I plan to go vertical so I can plant more. Yay Julie, fight it all the way.
I am the one that emailed John about this lady's problem. Can you IMAGINE??? NOT being able to grow food on your OWN property??? This is total BS IMHO. America is turning more into Nazi Germany every day.
This is actually the reason I started watching your videos I was waiting for you to talk about this. My uncle told me about private edible gardens being outlawed in Texas and people actually being forced to pull up fruit trees etc. And I couldn't believe it this is completely ridiculous keep up the good work love your videos every one is entertaining and a learning experience
I have seen houses with far worse yards than hers and far more useless.
I suppose I should have a town planner come and chew me out about my one lonely avocado tree on my porch since that's probably not suitably useless enough.
Keep on growing Julie Bass! You are a free individual in a free Republic. Your city government does not have the right to tell you what to do with your own property. YOU are the owner, not the city. The ability to keep and do what we wish with our own property is a fundemental part of liberty.
@sibleyirene Yeah but if you eat healthy that less trips to the doctor for things like heart problems etc. Which means less money for the medical industry! What about the poor rich people! They need people fat and sick! :P
I grew up down the street from there, In fact I delivered newspapers in Oak Park. It's a low class neighborhood to begin with. And like a McDonalds manager on a power trip, that is how the "authorities" treat citizens in these neighborhoods. I'd like to go down there and shoot some footage of all the graffiti and trashy homes, to compare it with hers. This is called tyranny.
I found this link: facebook.com/pages/Oak-Park-Hates-Veggies/184553881597878
Good info John! I've gone over there to give my support. I have grown 2 squash plant on my ever expanding front yard garden. Although I have a lot of plants in the backyard I want to expand to the front. My problem is not the city but the husband who hates veggies! lol
John you should talk to Novella Carpenter who wrote the book farm city. she had a farm on the poorer side of west oakland and let the neighbors pick fresh food. the city has shut her down.
@martenfisher1 I think that is not the point. Some people have small backyards or one that face the wrong way for the best sun. I think the point is that in these days of hard times large corps should not dictate that we should eat only the food they sell us. That what will happen if they win the front yard band. Then the back yard will be next. We should all be afraid!
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of! I wrote to the Mayor and City Manager. I'm in Australia, and we thankfully don't have such ridiculous 'laws'.
I just heard about this yesterday. Unbelievable. Have we actually reached the point that a vegetable garden is considered an eyesore? Stop this ride, I wanna get off...
One way I avoid getting flack for the growing I do in my front yard is bordering my beds with flowers. They aid in insect protection, disguise bare ground, and hide plants that are going seed. Also, I don't invest in raised beds in front, in order to create a "naturalized" landscape, and I allow grass and ground cover to grow between beds. Amaranth, sunflowers, borage, calendula, nasturtium, and chard are quite pretty and edible.
I heard about this a few days ago and sent a letter to her city council member. A similar thing happened in Kansas City, and basically we shot them down with an email campaign illustrating to history of lawns in America and the usefulness of edible landscaping for the community and economy, not to mention the environment. Some people are just ignorant of why we have lawns, and the fact that edible landscaping has NEVER been shown to lower property values. Total myth.
Funny how our grandparents can be sent over seas to fight in wars.... BUT WE WONT stand up to these same fascists pigs here at home! I wouldn't get a lawyer... I'd get a gun and LOTS of ammo!!!!!!!!
It is immoral to be threatened for doing things with their your own property that hurts or threatens nobody. Asking the permission of your masters for doing things like growing food isn't American. It's people who go along with the tyranny of their perceived masters who propagate this sort of thing. If her neighbors would step up and support her the masters would have to back down.
Just type Julie Bass of Oak Park, MI into search and it'll pull up plenty of information regarding this issue. It's ridiculous!! Oak Park will find that they're losing even more revenue when people begin to vacate Oak Park to places that allow a family to grow a garden in their front yard.
I understand the need for certain rules re: this issue b/c we have ppl here w/rusted out vehicles, etc. laying around their front yards and it's unappealing and lowers prop values. But THIS is ridiculous!!

I have my vegetables garden in the backyard and I take pride on keeping my lawn looking great. But all respect John, I agree with the city laws you got to keep your neighborhood looking good. If you don't have the space to garden, grow what you can in your limited space or move out of the city or buy a house with a backyard.
They want people to go to work all week and waste their weekends cutting their lawn, watching football, and drinking beer. Never mind the FED and the men behind the curtain.
Yea, they are going to put her in jail for having a tidy and neat raised bed garden system in her front yard, however they showed the neighbours yards that were over run with weeds and two feet high grass. These neighbours have no fear of the law because they have a so called "normal" front yard? It's going to be interesting to see what the jury thinks.
@PoorMansNews I agree with you. Unfortunately, nobody actually owns their land in the United States. We are just tenants on the land owned by the government.
And we just continue to just lay down. hmmm...tyranny, infact. We came here to escape Britain from tyranny... then the central banking system embedded itself here while we were all off with our jobs, toys, vacations... sitcoms...reality tv...etc. I'm cooked with all this. The IMF, Federal Reserve, and the World bank has installed this system...and we all just go along. We are screwed if we don't do something about it. Did you notice I didn't say our government?
But what did she grow then? The city zoning dude said only decoratives and some are edible I guess, but if she was growing corn, potatoes and onions or something like that I can understand that the city might say that those are not decorative(??) In that case she knew what the rules are right? But I do think it's rediculous that you may not grow veggies. Unless you live in a villa park or something where the landscaping needs to be uniform, you chose for that yourself then.
@growingyourgreens John, I've been watching a bunch of your videos and have been learning a lot. You've said that comments are the best way to contact you, so here it is. I heard about this and immediately thought about you. I'm totally stoked you posted this video. I suspect our political views may disagree on some things, but on this (and many more?) I totally agree. You are more polite compared to the way I feel about "laws" that dictate what one can and cannot do on their own land.
I've looked up several dictionaries and not one of them says suitable means common. The Oxford English Dictionary says "right or appropriate for a particular person, purpose, or situation" (which the garden is). Merriam Webster dictionary says "adapted to a use or purpose" (also true of their garden). Websters dictionary (which the planning guy allegedly quoted from) does not mention the word common at all in its definition of suitable. It's insane that this family is being victimised like this.
If I had a front yard I would grow up front as well. some people just can't mind there own business, and thats so sad. Well hopefully one day the United States will actually legalize our constitution, and we might just become that home of the brave. Thanks for making this video, it reminds me that our country is going to hell in a hand basket, at least my basket is filled with fresh vegetable to eat on my way there.

While I support being free, one of the other things you have to consider is plain old eye-sores. While I support anyone in trying to do something different or going against the grain, sometimes it all depends on how you go about it. John, I love your videos and I hope you have a lot of success in making them, but I'm very glad that I don't live next to you. I'm sure that the appearance of your yard, while awesome for you, isn't so awesome to the people that have to look at it all day every day.
@MrMyrdok Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's painful for me to hear about people going hungry in this country and then to see the eyesore of manicured lawns everywhere I go. Not to mention lawns aren't even that attractive, they are about as interesting to me as grey concrete walls.
2:00 Interesting, in the uk the paving over of front gardens has actually been blamed for summer droughts at the resevoirs due to rain not been able to drain through the ground and into the water table.
@growingyourgreens This is where I sent my message... You'll have to find a place on this website to send a message to the people running this village but I think it will help... oakpark-mi dot com I haven't a clue what they are thinking there in Oak Park...

To hell with anybody who thinks they control you.

the point that he is making is possibly a little incorrect. while there may be some cause to worry about growing veg being illegal, in this case that is not the reason they prosecuted her. it has more to do with the eyesore of the planters/dead plants in the fall. moreover, the fact that it was in the front yard is the main point. there is no issue with planting in the back. however, i do believe that the gov wants to make all of it illegal. thats why i plan to move to costa rica asap!
benjorgensen1 7 months ago
@swikfors I hate to say it, but they will probably be stealing it from her instead of asking.

HEY MEMBERS OF THE US GOV. I'm going to grow a garden in the front yard now.
mizzoulibertarian 7 months ago
Ok... having looked at the photos of her front lawn it is certainly neat and organized... but.. given it was the front lawn I probably would have made the garden an ornamental distribution rather than standard raised beds in order to avoid complaints from neighbors.

Why not plant in the back yard?
martenfisher1 8 months ago
@martenfisher1 I think that is not the point. Some people have small backyards or one that face the wrong way for the best sun. I think the point is that in these days of hard times large corps should not dictate that we should eat only the food they sell us. That what will happen if they win the front yard band. Then the back yard will be next. We should all be afraid!

redwood575 8 months ago
One way I avoid getting flack for the growing I do in my front yard is bordering my beds with flowers. They aid in insect protection, disguise bare ground, and hide plants that are going seed. Also, I don't invest in raised beds in front, in order to create a "naturalized" landscape, and I allow grass and ground cover to grow between beds. Amaranth, sunflowers, borage, calendula, nasturtium, and chard are quite pretty and edible.

The city zoning dude said only decoratives and some are edible I guess, but if she was growing corn, potatoes and onions or something like that I can understand that the city might say that those are not decorative(??) I've looked up several dictionaries and not one of them says suitable means common.
