Basically, the Combine's contention is that physiological needs must be separated from our lives. Their purpose is out-dated and they no longer register use -- they only damage us.
The Combine aims to replace them with more pragmatic needs, like the need to advance and work -- that way we can be happy and productive.
The Combine's need to "combine" and evolve helps them avoid any killing. That is until Gordon and his R-Tard rebels fucked it up.
@Nemesis0300 If by contention you mean "enslaving mankind for their glory" then yes, that is what they are intending when they put up a suppression field. The reality of it is that they put it up so that humans couldn't reproduce and have any children who would one day rise up aganst them. Even speaking against the Combine results in the death penalty, without trial. Further, the "Civil Protection" units are really more of a secret police. They're really brainwashed, soulless monsters.
@NicholasGeschke So? Humans enslave animals smaller than us all the time. It's evolutionary and healthy for the Combine to enslave us.
They're better than us; smarter than us; stronger than us. Why would an imperfect and war ridden race try and destroy them? Basic biological impulse -- that's why. If you want to be a slave to neurological presets, than fine. I for one would marvel at the spectacle of beauty that is the Combine. I would join them, too.
@Nemesis0300 I disagree with you there. We are a young race in need of guidance, yes. But to have aliens threaten our race with extinction to ensure compliance is the wrong way to encourage our evolution.
Besides, the Combine don't want what's best for Mankind. They want Earth and its resources, and they think of us as beasts of burden, if that. Were it not for Breen showing that we're capable of rational thought, they likely would have ended up eradicating the entire species outright.
@NicholasGeschke Indeed, I like them better than humanity, though.
We are going to go extinct before we get anymore visibly Evolved -- that's applied to real life, too. Organisms are designed to decline at some point.
@NicholasGeschke Even if you don't agree with me there, you have to agree that Breen is a good guy. He tried to save humanity by making them seem worthy of the Combine's military. If he didn't, humans would all be eradicated.
@kdreamland Thank you! But that's not entirely true. Only the first few Breencasts are presented without a HUD, because you don't have any gear in that part of the game. The rest are recorded carrying the things I had at that point of the game. And the echo was also in-game. The only presentation elements I added myself, were the intro, outro, the introduction and summary to each Breencast, and the music. And I recorded the whole thing with WeGame, if my memory serves me right. :)
Very brilliant man, and an eloquent speaker. The only real problem I have with him is that he doesn't realize he's a puppet to the Combine. He's a collaborator.
Sure, he says he's doing it to protect Humanity, but in truth - it's just damning mankind to enslavement.
@NicholasGeschke I really think that Breen is doing it mostly for himself. Sure, he keeps his Quisling-attitude all the way to the end but when Gordon has breeched the Citadel its fairly obvious that Breen puts his life before every man and woman on Earth.
@Zhucci Maybe. He did talk about Gordons "contract" being open to "the highest bidder" . Also, Gman did give Eli the crystal from Xen and I would think it would have gone through Breen first.
I love how false the praise is for City 17 and the Combine. It's great to see the subtle touches that Breen hates his job, and is in way over his head.
I think the uploader needs to make Dr. and Breen two different tags to add to the video. under 10000 views since 2009? really? Dude you should have had loads more.
@antdude well not really. in ep 1 there was a pre recorded video that alex watched of him. it implied that he passed himself into the body of a combine advisor worm thing. pretty crazy. and i don't think they mentioned him in ep2. could be wrong though
Dr. Breen was a hero. As was Eli Vance. Dr. Wallace Breen saved humanity from extinction during the Seven Hour War by contacting the Combine. He bought humanity time, and when the time came for liberation I suspect he didn't want the resistance to bring the destruction of mankind he prevented.
7:10-7:30 Breen says he captured eli vance beacuse he hid freeman... But eli was also a MAIN Aliance leader.... So theres more then one reason for capturing be he is using that reason to scare the citizens.... And thus if you listend you would know eli is with him...
We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of actor Robert Culp on March 24, 2010. We were fortunate enough to work with Culp during the making of Half-Life 2, when he wrestled invisible headcrabs, expressed a passionate interest in animation, and taught us all how to bring a character to life from words on a page, as he voiced one of gaming's most beloved villains, Dr. Wallace Breen. He will be missed.
@Matuxmatux If Breen was the first boss, and then the advisors took over in EP1 (A little bit) and took over in EP2(by a lot), then who is the true combine master that we will see in EP3/HL3? Where do you think EP3/HL3 will take place after we have destroyed the Borealis? And Finally...Do you think Adrian Shepard will take place as a npc? I hope that happens, Adrian is my favorite character in the game of HL:OP(Half life: Opossing Force)
I have played half life 2 atleast a dozen times but this is the first time i heard the breencast 4 where he adresses the combine forces, i cant believe ive missed that part so many times. Its really funny, how freeman really is a very unlikely kind of hero, he's a scientest, not a supersoldier or anything like most stereotype video games heros. And to top it all off, he wears glasses. Still though Freeman is the most badass hero as far as video games characters go. even if he is a four eyed geek
@xBHDx Hey there! I was just scuffling through my old comments and I have an artist to recommend - One song in particular. When I didn't know at first, I thought it was dead-on Hive. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist. Definitely check it out, it has an awesome video!

The level of writing that Valve produced here is nothing short of absolutely brilliant. The things that Breen infers in his speeches are somehow both subtle and profound. It's amazing.
The original Half-Life, in it's time, was easily the greatest game ever conceived. The sequel was no-less impressive. Both revolutionary in their own right.
@LazyMofo69 *Is afraid of flame wars starting* I personally think Left 4 Dead is a bad Valve game. I can see why some people like it, but I just can't stand it. Dear Dr. Breen. I have been wondering this for a long time. I- I was wondering, I was wondering if i could have an impression in butter of your ova...
Also, are you by any chance related to Sean Connery?
The second speech is my favorite. It really says a lot about Dr. Breen as a person, as well as scientific ethics.
Listen to him doing his damndest to convince the world that slavery is freedom. He has no qualms about twisting and perverting the ideals of reason and science to justify horrible things. It really shows what a twisted individual he is.
Compare him to Dr. Vance and Dr. Kleiner, who, while partly responsible for the Black Mesa incident, continue to dutifully study the forces that caused it, gaining knowledge and using it as a force for good.
In the end, the world is saved by scientists, but not before it is almost ruined with the help of another one.
Already have, as should every human being. Brave New World is another good one (though its dystopia is consumerist rather than fascist, and is thus even more relevant now than it was when it was written).
Although I found Nineteen Eighty Four's dystopia was far more scary then the Combine rule that Half Life 2 presented. For one the Party's indoctrination made it so it was virtually impossible for them to be overthrown. While the Combine just kill people, the Party instead brainwashes them and forces them to confess their crimes, then kill them. To prevent any sort of rebel uprising to occur.
@Soakedboy Not at all... if you listen to the breencast where he adresses the transhuman unit you'll notice that he chooses his words quite carefully, and even says something along these lines "Though I am not in the position of ordering you...". He has no authority whatsoever over the alien-combine forces, he's a subject to the advisors' will. He is only a propagandistic figure in this larger scheme, there to calm the citizens down.
@GERdeathstar Ohhhh. Since I never played half life (sad face) I don't know what part he played in that game. Was he a good person at first? and are the combine just humans being controlled by the advisors, or are they aliens in human like suits?
@Soakedboy Breen himself is a collaborator. He chose to work for the combine and help them, in exchange for some power and a good life. In EP1 you even see an old recording of him asking the advisors for some kind of a "salvation", I guess he wants to be made an advisor somehow. And the combine..the real combine race is controlled by the advisors and consists mostly of synths like the Striders. The ones with the masks were humans once but brainwashed and turned into cyborgs, hence "transhuman"
@Soakedboy Truth is, I never played the first HL. The story behing the Black Mesa facility, and the zombies' home planet Xen are something I don't know one bit about. But this alien race introduced in HL2 was interesting enough to do some research back then (:
@Soakedboy Breen got his position because of his intelligence and his cunning rethorics. The combine, as their name implies, combine all the stuff they gathered on the worlds they conquered and engineer their troops. The Civil Protection on earth is just the most basic form of synth-life.
If you love speeches from an overly intelligent character I would recomend you to listen to most of Andre Ryan's audio diaries and speeches from Bioshock.
His Overwatch cast is probably my most memorable and favorite, aside from the constant direct lectures he gives in the end of Half-Life 2 (which, by the way, is the most epic segment in the entire game).
I always thought Breen was a great foil for Freeman. Freeman's quiet heroism clashes well with Breen's preachy antagonism. I still get caught up in this game every time I play it and I cannot wait until I can buy Episode 3.
Nice video compilation. Breen is one of my favorite recent antagonists too.
Heh, watching this makes me want to play through Half-Life 2 and Episodes 1 and 2 again on The Orange Box. I'm so hoping we hear something on Episode 3 soon!

Soakedboy 1 year ago
@Soakedboy Breen himself is a collaborator. He chose to work for the combine and help them, in exchange for some power and a good life. In EP1 you even see an old recording of him asking the advisors for some kind of a "salvation", I guess he wants to be made an advisor somehow. And the combine..the real combine race is controlled by the advisors and consists mostly of synths like the Striders. The ones with the masks were humans once but brainwashed and turned into cyborgs, hence "transhuman"

@GERdeathstar Well thank you sir Atlas of Half-Life.
Now I know much more then I used to. :)

@Soakedboy Truth is, I never played the first HL. The story behing the Black Mesa facility, and the zombies' home planet Xen are something I don't know one bit about. But this alien race introduced in HL2 was interesting enough to do some research back then (:

@GERdeathstar You nerd!!! Haha jk, but wow. You know you love a game when...but I guess I loved it too, just not that much.

@Soakedboy Breen got his position because of his intelligence and his cunning rethorics. The combine, as their name implies, combine all the stuff they gathered on the worlds they conquered and engineer their troops. The Civil Protection on earth is just the most basic form of synth-life.

@GERdeathstar He may honestly believe he;s saving the human race by cooperating with the Combine.

At 0:57 does he say 'safe' or 'safer'?

If you love speeches from an overly intelligent character I would recomend you to listen to most of Andre Ryan's audio diaries and speeches from Bioshock.

His Overwatch cast is probably my most memorable and favorite, aside from the constant direct lectures he gives in the end of Half-Life 2 (which, by the way, is the most epic segment in the entire game).

The Overwatch cast is my favourite one also :D...

I always thought Breen was a great foil for Freeman. Freeman's quiet heroism clashes well with Breen's preachy antagonism. I still get caught up in this game every time I play it and I cannot wait until I can buy Episode 3.
Keep up the good work.

Ok... So one day I got this urge to finish the whole Half Life series in a row (Not in one day of course :D):
HL1, HL1: Opposing Force, HL1: Blue Shift, HL2, HL2: Ep.1 & HL2: Ep.2
It's my favourite video-game, and I just like Dr. Breen so much, that I felt I should make this video as sort of a tribute :D...

So yeah... You should definitely play this game! And if you feel like it, check out this video again afterwards :D...

Nice video compilation. Breen is one of my favorite recent antagonists too.
Heh, watching this makes me want to play through Half-Life 2 and Episodes 1 and 2 again on The Orange Box. I'm so hoping we hear something on Episode 3 soon!
