  • I've heard that you should never store a gun for a long time in a leather holster because the tannin acids in the leather eat at the metal. I see WW2 bringback guns on auction sites with heavy pitting all over one side but nice on the other. I'd bet that some of these guns were found in puddles of blood.

  • iraqveteran, what would be the best way to remove pitting?

  • Hey, I have an sks and the bore is completely rusted from end to end.. How do I get rid of all the rust? I'm worried I'll never be able to get it all out! Any info would be appreciated!

  • @rassi13 if its still repairable, by the honeing tools and polish it out. if its to bad by the parts and replace them. or if the whole gun is rusted, then hang it for a decoraon piece and get a new sks

  • I have a German mauser that I had fired and then cleaned, I looked down the bore and there was rust down the entire thing. I dont know how they got there. I had to shoot the gun to push out the rust.

  • If I had a penny for every youtube video that contained the phrase, "I don't know how well this will show up on camera".....I'd have about a gazillion pennies

  • i got a free remington 870 that had a rusty barrel, and some mudd on the stock because the previous owner that gave me it said it was junk, i cleaned everything up and scrubbed all that i could out of the barrel, the gun looks brand new but there is multiple little spots that kinda have a look to rust without the brown, but when i scrub the areas it doesnt go away... It doesnt have huge pits like this but could that be minor pitting???

  • you or mine left

  • HOw do you get rid of pitting?

  • does pitting on the OUTSIDE of the barrel affect performance?

  • I've noticed that a pitted barrel will look kind of "fuzzy" if you shine a light down it. While few old milsurp rifles will look shiny like a chrome lined barrel, it will at least look smooth if it has little to no pitting.

  • i just bought a new rifle, had it for about a couple of weeks and it has started to rust at the same time my .22 has which i have had for 6 months >= (

    SO STRESSFUL!!!

are pistols less maintenance than rifles?

  • God, I hate pitting.

  • @MegaGewehr

Yeah but anything that lays around long enough is going to pit sooner or later. I know of guys with 500+ gun collections, and even despite spot checking and buying dehumidifiers, there is going to be the occasional safe queen that rusts.

  • I've never had a rifle pit on me. That said, I only own 3 ARs, 1POF-415, and 1 Sig 556. However, I used to have a few surplus rifles (had to sell them because DOD moved me to an expensive area and I can't afford a house here, basically, it's a space issue). I would get pretty pissed anytime I discovered pitting underneath the stocks or along the lands in the bore.

CLP is my friend. I keep all of my current rifles dosed in the stuff. :D

  • @MegaGewehr

In Georgia, we almost have to use oil as thick as motor oil to keep it from evaporating. I keep my rifles religiously oiled, so I haven't had many problem.

I had a dehumidifier in the shop, but it broke down. I need to get it fixed.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 i use Damprid. we have a couple places in our house that just gets sooo moist and we have not a clue why so we have to use damprid devices to get the water out of the air. so where i keep my guns i use one for there as well. anyhow all you have to do is get the device then refile the powder bags every few months and empty the water. here in oregon its wet as hell and damprid works great think i will do a video on it tomorrow.

  • Hey 88 i've noticed you've tried to do a couple close ups with your video camera with no luck. Hint for ya, get a jewelers loop. Hold it up to the lens then move the object until it focuses. Hope it helps.

  • @rthom86

I have heard of doing that, but I haven't broken down and bought a jeweler's loop yet. I need to.

  • win are we going to do the loto just woundering if your still thinking about doing were do u stand old boy

  • We have already held the drawing for Feb. but we will be holding another drawing for March or April. I'll do one every month if feasible.

So far, I should be able to give something away for April.

  • Beautiful. What a shame...

  • Why such nice bluing next to the pitting?

  • It was probably covered by a leather frog i'm guessing.

  • I had it stored in a cardboard box and the box drew a little moisture in it caused the enclosed bayonet to rust...:(

  • Looks like a kar98k bayonet. Could be wrong :P

  • It's a Yugo M24/47 or M48 bayonet. I used to have one.

  • Its a scabbard.

  • I'm not quite THAT retarded, thanks. I got a kar98k bayonet from 1941 hung up on my wall complete with scabbard and leather frog.

  • lol you guys are nuts...

  • Its a scabbard.

  • hey.... (it;s a scabbard)

  • Hey, i was the one that requested the vid. Also great vid! Clears up some things and now i know that an old .38 of mine has pitting :( But thx!

  • put on the closed captions and watch the vid so funny

  • @VIKINGWARLOCK LOL, its funny, how crazy that the words could be that off

  • i got major pitting on my mosin nagant m38 barrel

  • That's definitely pitting lol! That a Yugo Mauser bayo?

  • That's correct.

  • Thank you for the video! Is there a way to remove the pitting on the metal?

  • If the pits aren't bad, you can generally polish the surface of the metal to where you don't seem them any more.

Sometimes, if a particular pit is deep enough, you can put a bead of weld on it and polish it back flush. You have to use great care not to apply too much heat to the wrong areas depending on what you are dealing with.

With parkerizing the whole surface is blasted anyways, so a pitted surface won't look near as bad after it is blasted.

  • How long does it take pitting to take place?

  • Depends on a couple of different things, area, age of gun, type of gun. Some times if it's not really deep you sand out the pits and reblue the surface. Sometimes a gunsmith will build up the surface with welds.

  • my marlin model 60 has some pitting on the outside of the barrel =(
