i think the tempo is hard to figure out because it is left to the performer. Their heart can choose, whether that be to the liking of those around them or not
@Jesika7iluvhorses Tempo for this piece is hard, usually allemande is in moderate tempo, however remember it is a dance. Check out Arnold Steinhardt's version it may help you out. This interpretation is pretty accurate for how it is suppose to be played.
Well you could give him a good modern made violin from a reputable Chinese luthier that would cost about 3 or 4 grand and he could play this almost as beautifully as it sounds here....maybe 90% as good. But if you placed the violin in the hands of an amateur violinist like myself you would get crap out of it. I'd therefore conclude the beauty is 90% his skill and 10% of it is his violin. Just a rough guess.
Once, Heifetz forgot his violin for a concert. Then, he borrowed a cheap one from a local for the concert. After the concert, an important lady from the town walked up to him and said "Your Stradivarius sounded beautiful." He simply replied "Thank you."
@empoleon9999 One evening, when he used his new build instrument, a person from the audience complemented Heifetz with the way his Del Gesu sounded, that evening. He held the instrument to his ear and said: 'I don't hear anything'.
@empoleon9999 : The "cheap one" was likely worth several grand and was probably a fine instrument, as the person he borrowed it from was almost certainly a professional musician with the local symphony. There is such a fine line between an exceptional instrument and a good-quality piece that it would certainly be lost on some soceity woman unless she led a secret life as a professional luthier.
@empoleon9999 My violin teacher constantly complains about how people she entertains always used to approach her and tell her what a great violin she had and how great it sounded. This would frustrate her because this thing was absolutely a piece of junk and her playing only sounded good because she practiced for large amounts of time just on technique to make it sound beautiful, therefore all this wonderful sound was being produced by HER, not the violin.
@empoleon9999 It is not always the violin as Heifetz has shown. She now has a new, beautiful violin that will take your breath away and her sound is absolutely amazing due to the discipline she used for practicing with the bad one.
Unfortunately, I need a good sounding violin to cover up my horrible sound haha =)
Now... Hilary Hahn's version is a little too slow for me. And this one is a little too fast... something in between would've been perfect.

I have to play this for an audition but I can't figure out the exact tempo marking. Such a beautiful piece though.

Beautiful tone and phrasing - no excess at all - this is the way to play it.
The real McCoy playing here.

Not good enough. Does not bring out the finesse inbuilt in this piece. Boring.

If the violin could talk and you asked it and Salvatore, they'd probably both say it's a 50/50 relationship :)

stradivarius?

Yes, it's one of the later models that Stradivari made, the Hart ex Francescatti Stradivarius made in 1727.
