According to the world health organization DU does not cause significant risk of birth defects and one would have to be completely surrounded by it for years to have a significant increase in cancer risk. DU was investigated in connection to Gulf War Syndrome, but more likely causes include Sarin gas and other chemical weapons.

The fact it has a half life of 4.5 billion years means that its radioactivity is so low that it really isn't dangerous in terms of radioactivity.
Basically, if you inhaled 9 billion Uranium-238 atoms, about ONE would emit radiation a YEAR. Even with alpha radiation, the most dangerous, you need an internal alpha emmiter to be giving out thousands of alpha particles in a short time.
Beta and gamma are not dangerous except in very high quantities. They even use beta in medical tracers.
You can work it out. A half life of 4.5 billion years means that if you had one kilogram of uranium, there would be half a kilogram left after 4.5 billion years.
So if you had 9 billion uranium atoms, half of them would undergo radioactive decay and emit radiation over 4.5 billion years - in other words, 4.5 billion of them, or one every year.
You're constantly being hit by gamma radiation, several times a second.

DU bullets' radiation won't affect your body as the uranium is DEPLETED, which is the opposite of INRICHED uranium (that causes heavy gamma particles). If I've got choice, I always choose better armor in my tank, even if it's radioactive and toxic. Same thing to DU ammunition. If I have better armor, and more effective ammunition - so this is what I need to win. There are more for, than against it. If your country would be at war, you would like to have better weapons than the enemy.

We won't stop using DU rounds because it's VERY effective. The kinetic energy it delivers is valuable in armor piercing and the destruction of bunkers. Also, despite what you say, it's not that radioactive. The alpha particle only travels one to two cm from the uranium, and can be stopped with a single sheet of paper. You can only be hurt by long exposure. However, if some shrapnel got inside of you, that's a problem. But if you got deleted uranium shrapnel, you're probably dead already.

DU is supposed to be used as a last ditch weapon, in case of being totally routed by the USSR tank and mechanized divisions.
Because of the sheer size of the USSR army, DU projectile was created, so that it can take out any armored vehicle with a one shot one kill probability, but the effects will kill all on the battlefield. In battle, or by exposure to the radiation, years after the battle.

The fact it has a half life of 4.5 billion years means that its radioactivity is so low that it really isn't dangerous in terms of radioactivity.
Basically, if you inhaled 9 billion Uranium-238 atoms, about ONE would emit radiation a YEAR. Even with alpha radiation, the most dangerous, you need an internal alpha emmiter to be giving out thousands of alpha particles in a short time.
Beta and gamma are not dangerous except in very high quantities. They even use beta in medical tracers.

You can work it out. A half life of 4.5 billion years means that if you had one kilogram of uranium, there would be half a kilogram left after 4.5 billion years.
So if you had 9 billion uranium atoms, half of them would undergo radioactive decay and emit radiation over 4.5 billion years - in other words, 4.5 billion of them, or one every year.
You're constantly being hit by gamma radiation, several times a second.
With uranium, it's not the radioactivity that poses a danger, it's the toxicity

They use depleted uranium as a counter-weight because it's so fucking dense and heavy that they can get a heavy counterweight into a smaller space.
It's about 40% heavier per atom than lead.

How much does radiation reinforce the chemical toxicity and vice versus? How much do the different size dust particles reinforce the toxicity of the radiation and chemical toxicity? Although depleted uranium can be hazardous the amount of radioactivity is extremely small. This video reminds me of a health waiver (similar to something that you would sign before you go sky diving). It is potentially dangerous but it is done thousands of times without incident. DU bullets' radiation won't affect your body as the uranium is DEPLETED, which is the opposite of INRICHED uranium (that causes heavy gamma particles). It's the toxicity that's the problem, the rad doesn't do much unless it penetrates your body. I'm not supporting nuclear based weapons but some people need to do more research.

Couple of points: I think the use of DU kinetic energy penetrators is another example of NATO procurement departments having their heads stuck in the cold war (where everything would be contaminated to fuck and back if world war three did kick off), and depleted uranium, if used in a breeder reactor, can produce plutonium, which can be used as a fuel (I think).
Oh: And it's called 'depleted' because it's not (in it's current state) fissionable, NOT because it's less radioactive.

Please explain what DU munition is being used in Iraq. There has been no new stock of DU made since the early 90's. We have enough DU munitions to last numerous decades at the current rate of use.

Our DU weapons are only 83.73% u-238 and have
uranium-235,uranium-236...plutonium-238, plutonium-239, plutonium-240, neptunium-237, Protactinium-231, Protactinium-233, thorium-231, thorium-234, Americium-241, Technetium-99.
At 1.15% u-235, can be used in an atomic reactor.

Hey I read the same warnings on a can of lead paint. What would you have them do??? Use a nuke to take out a tank? If HE rounds didn't work well agains Panzers in 1943 how do you think they would work on modern tanks? War is tough and if you want them to use bow and arrows you would complain about how many soldiers die. I recently took Physics 1,2,and 3 (all 4.0's)and can't even begin to give you an educated guess on what these weapons do.

I feel ashamed and naive for assuming that our military would never knowingly subject our soldiers and innocent civilians to such horrors. Sadder still is the fact I feel powerless to do anything about it, because getting involved will steal time away from watching Scott Baio is 45 and Single on VH1.

Mate - UK pioneered the stuff in WW2 when German armour became too powerful for HE rounds. Only DU had the strength to yield. IMO - who want to take a fart to a Sh!t fight??! That said though - they shouldnt need to use it now...just thought Id state that the minds werent warped in the first place ;)

If you want control of Caspian Sea oil and gas, and the pipelines through southern Afghanistan, DU will eventually get rid of the people problem. Be patient.

Clouds of DU from the Gulf wars have been detected over London England and now heading towards America...so the chickens are coming home to roost. US troops serve in countries which are radioactive for thousands of years... and being poisoned by that radioactivity. Most european countries will not send troops to Iraq becuase they know its a death sentence caused by DU.
