  • Come on now folks...Glen Hansard (that's the Frames guy) is not fit to lace Will Oldham's boots. You all know this to be true

  • Geez, someone's got a bug up his ass about Glen Hansard.

  • I wouldn't say I had a "bug" up my "ass" about Hansard...but I do think he's fairly shit. Will Oldham, on the other hand, is amazing.

  • Well, The Frames happen to be one of my favorite bands. Same with the Swell Season, which is Hansard and Marketa Irglova, So I don't think anyone should say one thing is better than another and consider it objective truth. And expect everyone else feels the same way. To me that's a ridiculous way of thinking. It seems really obnoxious to say "You all know this to be true". Obviously I don't feel that way, so must a lot of people.

  • And I like Will Oldham, I haven't really been exposed to a lot of his music, but I've liked a lot of what I've heard. The Frames clearly respect Oldham as a singer songwriter enough to perform his song at concerts and on the radio. It seems in bad taste to go and call Hansard "fairly shit". Especially since they seem to have very similar sounds, in my opinion.

And personally, I think Hansard has a better singing voice.

  • *sigh*...ok...first things first...the comment "you all know this to be true" was intended to be light-hearted. Obviously I don't seriously expect everyone to feel the same way. Nor do I particularly care. The Frames are one of your favourite bands? Good for you. I think they're fairly shite. That's called "having an opinion", I don't quite see how it's in bad taste to express a preference one way or the other. Horses for courses and all that.

  • Well then I apologize for trying to have a serious conversation.

I think it's bad taste not because you have a different opinion, but because instead of giving legitimate reasons for not liking something, like maybe you just don't like Hansard's lyrics, or the way he performs, or the way he sings or whatever, you just say he's shit. Seems a little juvenile to me.

  • Your apology is accepted. Can we stop having this conversation now, or would you really like me to list the reasons why I don't like Glen Hansard? I mean it obviously won't be pleasant reading for you.

  • No problem dude.

  • @ginnoveffect Lol I've been there before dude. I can just feel the sigh hah.

  • the only reason i know this song is from a irish band called "the frames" who covered it, and to be honest i think they do a better version of it!. but to each their own.

  • Believe it or not, Bonnie Prince BIlly himself does a much "better' (meaning more slick production I'm guessing to you) version of this song himself under the Palace Brothers moniker. I would venture to say that your Irish friends couldn't hold a candle to this gentleman.

  • i dunno...the frames are quite an incredible band. their singer won an oscar a year or two ago for the music to a film he starred in. don't get me wrong, bonnie prince billy is also incredible, but i wouldn't go dismissing the frames so quickly like that.

  • Well, to say that a band does a better version of a song that the original band does is to dismiss the band itself. My point is that THIS band does another, "better" version of this very song and so YOU shouldn't dismiss them. Follow me?

  • I do prefer the Bonnie Prince Billy version to the the Palace Music one, but The Frames cover is amazing. Glen Hansard has a way of taking songs by great artists like WIll Oldham and making them his own. You should look it up on youtube, I'm certain there's a Frames version somewhere.

But would be fantastic would be if Bonnie Prince Billy and The Frames could perform it together. That would be historic.

  • that's fine if you like The Frames. I'm not ripping on that band at all. I'm just saying Bonnie Prince Billy is no one to be dismissed. By the way I listened to that Frames version of this song it's not really that great.

  • Yeah I know what you meant, and I'm not dismissing Bonnie Prince Billy either. I think he's pretty good.

And sure, no problem that you don't like the Frames cover. Though they have a different version which they played on the radio a few years ago, you should look it up. Look up Donal Dineen's radio show "Here Comes the Night", on the station Today FM. The Frames did an acoustic version that I think is much better than the one on The Roads Outgrown.

  • vacan, la raja, que cancion

  • Unbelievable tune.

  • his most beautiful song

  • This is an incredibly beautiful song.

  • "Now you'll haunt me, you'll haunt me / till I've paid for what I've done / It's a payment which precludes the having of fun"

Sums up how I think of Oldham's music.

  • Love this song!!!

  • The shot of the carpet stairs is amazingly close to what I always pictured for this song. Great job.
