Second choice voting and proportional distribution of electoral votes.
That is, say the "hurdle" to get included in the proportional distribution is 10%. If your first choice candidate falls short, your vote goes to your second choice candidate. That allows supporters of third parties to express their preference, without getting locked out of the actual decision between the two main parties.
