I have probably been watching JB too much but has anybody else noticed how he had a habit of standing with his right heel off the ground like at 3:39 ? Another good example is the final scene in the Holmes epsiode The Three Gables when he's confronting the widow. I know I'm hooked when I start noticing little things like that. :)
@Lessons2005 All I have to say is... you're not alone! I noticed it too. Yet if there is any injury he seemed to have been mostly unaffected. He moved like a dancer most of the time. In his biographies I always expected to see more music and dancing in his background. One of the most beautiful men who ever lived!
don't mind they dub Audrey's voice (personally I don't like her own singing voice) but for Jeremy...no no no! such a cruel and thoughtless thing to do to him, having his beautiful voice dubbed!!!
never found those four minutes on my copy of my 2-dvd edition. Is it from a 1994 -edition or in 2004? I could not find it anywhere!!! Is there more to it??
I remember watching this documentary on AMC when I first got into Sherlock Holmes and I wanted to find out more about the gorgeous and talented Jeremy Brett. Imagine my excitement when I discovered he was in a movie I had loved all my life. He looked so happy here that I had no idea he was so sick. A few months later -- he was dead. This documentary will always hold a special place in my heart as the very last thing (outside Sherlock Holmes) that I saw Jeremy Brett in before his death.
This was a very unexpected treat on my dvd. I never knew he narrated this and then he suddenly popped on screen as well! Love the little quiff btw, makes him look very boyish.
He does look remarkably lean and healthy here, considering that in 1994 he was unfortunately already very ill.
Even though I recently found out that Jeremey could sing, I was ticked and extremly disappointed that they dubbed over him. Dubbing is wrong, unless, of course, if the actor can't sing, then its okay. They should never have dubbed him.
It was nothing short of criminal that they dubbed the singing in this film, especially as Jeremy had such a rich and superb singing voice! He was a real treasure, both as an incredibly talented actor, and as a man!
Oh,I've searched this clip for so many times. Though I've been told that to buy the DVDs and I would get it,but in fact,I haven't got it in my edition. Thank you very very much!!!I even don't know how to express my appreciation~~
What bugs me more than anything though, is that OTSWYL is my most favorite song out of the whole musical, and I KNOW JB could have sung it better. Bill Shirley has a technically strong voice but I find him not very musical at all. I can imagine in my own head a version much more musical and sensitive, and it's a small step from that to imagining JB singing it. Sorry for my rant. . .I just can't stand it!!! Argh, and dear Jeremy, such a lovely and humble person, kept it to himself for 30 years.
It's even more of a crime for Jeremy though, because it wasn't just that he had a good voice and could sing---he was trained in the choir for years and he sang professionally! It makes absolutely no sense for him to be dubbed.
With Audrey it's more understandable, because she is the lead and has such a huge part, and I don't think she had really sung before. I'm just permanently upset about Jeremy though.
Jeremy had a beautiful voice, speaking AND singing. It also had a wonderful, unique quality to the sound that sets it apart from others. It's such a loss that they didn't use it. Maybe they wanted more generic-sounding singing to keep from upstaging Rex Harrison.
I have this documentary but it's on vhs. Whoever edited it shouldn't have been allowed to cut away from Jeremy so often! Or at all, even. lol
Thanks for posting! It's much better with the in-between parts deleted, no? :)
I just DON'T understand why they replaced Jeremy's voice with that other guy...the other guy was okay, but he didn't have Jeremy's rich, lovely tones~
And I like MFL's music, but....it seems terrible that the guy who wrote it didn't stay faithful to George Bernard Shaw's statement that Eliza married Freddy and lived happily with him. XD
believe it or not, altho My fair lady is so famous I'd never seen it and had had no interest in it either. but when I got to know JB was in it, I dashed several miles to buy the CD!!!:) And War and Peace too:)
So true, mmcrosbie! You'd think everyone would adore him but he seems to be an acquired taste. Oh, well, we can all adore him here in the online world!
I don't know why I can't seem to interest my friends in Jeremy. I think they all think I'm a bit quaint. Oh well, I am in good company online. Thank goodness for the internet. He was wonderful.
Hey, Bernard shaw meant for her to marry Freddy! That's my consolation when i watch this. If I feel in the mood for Eliza to stay with Higgins, i just watch Leslie Howard's "Pygmalion". One of the only reasons I watch My Fair Lady is for Jeremy! I just skip the rest of the scenes till I can see him say "How DO you do?" haha I love that.
You know I still can't believe that they dubbed his singing voice in this film! He had a much better and richer voice than the person who sang for him! One of the biggest mistakes filmmakers have ever made! Shame on them! *grrrrrr*
I agree! It was awful that they didn't use his voice! I found myself yelling at the TV at the end of the movie when she picks Henry Higgins instead of Freddy. "HOW COULD YOU PICK SUCH A JERK!? WHEN YOU HAD FREDDY SPENDING ALL HIS TIME IN YOUR STREET!!!" I say us JB fans should rewrite it so that she picks Freddy instead of That Jerk!;-)
he was pretty as a young man. he was beautiful as an older man.

Was there ever an artist so unrecognized by the powers that be?
First they stupidly dub over his own beautiful and rich voice in My Fair Lady, then Hollywood let him slip thru their fingers.

btw I have the 2-disc 40th anniversary edition dvd, it's on that one.

Or you could look at this way. Poor Bill Shirley.. he received no credit until Brett admitted the truth... and he kept quiet until his death :(
workshyslacker 1 year ago 9
@workshyslacker Yeah...Bill was a great singer and actor himself. He was one of the most underrated performers of all time, just like Jeremy Brett.

Great narrator.
Hey, have you seen the PREMIERE of MFL here on youtube?
There's JB too, but it seems you can't write the URL here in the comment box!
Anyway use the keywords "my fair lady premiere".
The videos titles are: "raw footage my fair lady premiere part 1".. and part 2!
He's beautiful!

He was superb: the moves, the glance, the speech!
Alluring in the same way in both: the film and the documentary. Splendid voice, splendid hosting!
Thank you for posting this!
