This hit by Teresa Brewer hit #7 on the Top 40 charts and #3 in the United Kingdom. It would finish at #46 for the year, 1956. On July 9, 1955, Bill Haley and His Comets hit #1 with Rock Around the Clock, signifying the start of the Rock Era. On April 21, 1956, Elvis Presley hit #1 with Heartbreak Hotel, shooting this new sound into the stratosphere.
A tune from my teen years, and a terriffic one at that. Her voice was unique and will never occur again now that it is stilled forever. Today she would be called perky and I suppose that's the best description of her. She will always have a place in my heart.

A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl - Brewer, Theresa [Toledo, Ohio] - No.07 on 6/16/1956. 16 weeks Top 40. - "#3 UK hit. She goes from sweet to hot on this song." - Music! Music! Music!: - The Best Of Teresa Brewer (Verese Sarabande)-1995.
Just got to love her voice..She is so powerfull. I had forgotten about her songs till I was watching another singer and saw her name.So glad I did see it or I would have missed out on some good memories. Thank you .
Woo ;] I wasn't expecting the strong delivery in this song. Love it~. I can't believe I've been missing out on this type of music. If I hadn't seen the movie "Girl, Interrupted," which had "The End Of The World" by Skeeter Davis, I really wouldn't have known that I'd enjoy "this type" (oldies? I dunno.) of music so much. B'aw, I love how she changes the "personality" of her voice throughout the whole song.
@LettuceZing You're having what is called an "epiphany" or an awakening of sorts to a world of sound you have never or seldom listened to...enjoy it. Thanks for the comment...Lanny (Nocaro)
some songs i love are from the years even my grandparents was not alive.. like 1920, 1930.. it may look strange... but its true... my love for old songs is incredible..
@mscadburya that's interesting - however I think that feeling is inside you and not in the song itself. Either you're experiencing some childhood sensation around your grandparents / parents or something psychic perhaps
@Andremedia well, u know what? am a indian.. was fully in india till i was 18, then for the couple of years am in uk for my studies.. there is a noway i have heard these songs when am young... no one,as u said my grandparents would never listen to english classics.. nobody have got that interest.. am 20, but i love old songs.. after coming to uk, i started rummaging very old songs... i strongly believe i should have born in those period... sometimes some songs, makes me cry.. i dont know y :(
@mscadburya Well then that's an indicator of what you should delve into - a very clear signal what you should do is develop your interest, understanding and knowledge of the music that is affecting you so deeply!
yes same here ;p on the tlc police women everytime they'd advertise it i sing along without realizing hahahahah not my kinda music that i would listen to alot but i actully like this song ;p
Wow! What a surprise! I just looked this song up on a whim and heard it for the first time in decades. When I was a little kid, about 7, I'd go to my friend's house and his mom would play this. I vaguely remembered it as a sappy song about a "sweet, old-fashioned girl." As a kid, of course, I totally missed out on the irony. What an entertaining song! My friend's mom was cooler than I realized.
Whats great about this , is the Voice is, the real Instrument ,, no , bells whistles from electronics , just pure voice & instrumental playing & complimenting !! :)))
I heard this song on the show and have been hooked ever since... thanks to any way to get people to remember the old greats of the past... the way these new singers rip-off old school music is awful but now we have you tube - to prove to those whippersnappers(lol) we had it first... My kid was always assuming these new singers covered the songs first... NO THEY DID NOT !.... sorry but its true we certainly had the best..
It's interesting to me how much great music an entire generation of people have never heard and/or appreciated like this song simply because they have never heard it before or haven't heard it in a long time or they need a VISUAL image to accompany the music in order to "get it" so to speak. You're not the only one who has written me about that commercial which I've never seen.
is now stuffing a sock in her mouth... SORRY Nocaro, you DO make sence.... please ignore my previous smart ASS comment. and If you don't before you notice this message, don't worry, I know you forgive me...
That's what actually got me into this song! I saw that commercial and was like "Ohsnap, that song is awesome." And so I looked it up and found this. Teresa Brewer is amazing.
Everything old IS new again. They are using this song on commercials for a new police docu-reality show on TLC. Police Women of Broward County. Got my attention, lol.
Haha, Story of my Life! I love this! :)
