All christians are pretty damn stupid. if morons stopped electing them, the world would be much better and everyone could just get wasted and laid all the time.
The fact that the Catholic Church abused its power is not a justification for killing every priest without a trial. You have to make a distinction between the individual and the organization, the CNT did not do that. They practiced mass summary executions of more civillians than Pinochet. Looks like you finally got a chance to read Beevor's book, why not read the pages I recomended for you?
I would agree that there are highly reactionary, authoritarian traditions and doctrines within ALL world religions. I know that certainly there have been consistent anti-authoritarians who've identified as Christian anarchists (eg-Dorothy Day, Daniel Berrigan, etc.), but I do think the "No authority but God" thing is problematic. I think anarchism is also a spirtual tradition, i.e., a liberation of the human spirit from the chains of organized religion. That said, many individuals...
who identify with certain spirtual traditions have nuanced and non-rigid interpretations of those traditions, eg-Christian mysticism (see Tolstoy), or the Sufi tradition within Islam. There are also people like myself who simply say that there are truisms in every religion, and a lot of terrible shit. We can take the good and throw the garbage over the boat, as we can do with philosophy. I would be concerned with an anarchism that follows a religious dogma ver Batum, as this seems...
to be as reductionistic as an anti-statist who thinks wage slavery as OK. I mean, a literal interpretation of ANY of the world religions would reveal them as reactionary, laced with moral prudishness, oppressive.
If anarchism is "absence of authority" in its most simplified state, how can one be a religious anarchist when all religions are founded on a supreme authority? There is no free speech in religion! Great Budha, aren't you trying to be just a tad to nice to all?
I don't think so. A new bood by Alexandre Christoyannopoulos looks specifically at "Christian Anarchism: A Political Commentary on the Gospel (Imprint Academic, 2010), and there's no short list of Anarchists from the world's major religious traditions. Whether I'm being nice or not, there are a lot of people out there who see religion and anarchism and naturally reenforcing. The Catholic Worker is probably one of the best known groups.
I'm really sorry Buddhagem but I just can't accept the idea that a catholic person that truly believes in the almighty power of the church and its god could be a true anarchist. At one point this person would be in conflict with the whole concept of anarchy and the church dogmas that require obedience and submission to authority. One of the main reasons I am anarchist is my profound despise of authority in any form.
Aren't there certain branches in Judaism that promote questioning god (in order to get closer to him, or whatever)? I wouldn't call that "no freedom of speech". Since I'm not religious, I'm not familiar, nor that interested, in religious anarchism, but it is my understanding that religious anarchists see god as the "only" justified authority. So I could imagine people handling their own affairs all the while believing it is god's will that they do so.
TheAssholearchist, the problem lies in the reply from Camtho, he removed unfortunatly. Ok with your theory of allowing people to believe they are handling their own affairs while believing it's god's will, but when these people start requesting things be done only because it is god's will that they be done in such a way then that's were the real anarchists have to say: hey wait a minute I'm not going to go along with that just because you believe some bearded man in the clouds told you so!!!
"...but when these people start requesting things be done only because it is god's will that they be done in such a way...I'm not going to go along with that just because you believe some bearded man in the clouds told you so!!!"
True, true, but, then again, the whole point of anarchy is that you 'don't' have to "go along" with anything. They can request it all they want, once they try to "enforce" it on people, the answer is very easy: they aren't anarchists.
No, you really don't understand do you? Christian Anarchists like myself believe that God is the only hierarchy, not the Government.
"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mam-mon." - Matthew 6:24
A good book for understanding the church's oppressive role throughout feudal Europe in a wider context is Michael Parenti's "History As Mystery". When we can comprehend this, it becomes clear why the churches were attacked in the process of emancipation, rightly or wrongly.
I'd also hasten to add that there were Catholic Spanish anarchists as well ... Catholics in 1930s Spain were not of the same mind: there weren't a monolithic force. They fell all along the ideological spectrum, just like other groups.
How could you forgot the atheists! :) All jokes aside, for the clergy and all that they present, the elite of charlatans, manipulators and deceivers, I can't feel anything but utter contempt and complete disgust! Because, clergy, unlike the masses, is educated so they have responsibility for one thing they like to parade around with, and that is the ''truth''. If I believed in soul they would represent its total corruption. I tolerated the artistic ideas of/from church but no more.
good vid, being Irish I have some understanding of the power of the church in state affairs, and the anger it can stir. Unfortunately living in one of the most neoliberal and nouveau-rich (nouveau-bust) countries in Europe, we just like to moan into our pints and then talk about what shit we will buy this weekend. Lastly can I just point out that 'primer' in this context is pronounced 'primmer', not like the primer you would paint on your walls. Sorry, word pedantry is one of my character flaws
I would like to add that Protestant churches were not burned during the Spanish Civil War. It was only the Catholic Church because they always supported and praised every depot who came to power including Franco.
I agree with you that we should never condone the acts committed by individual anarchist during the Spanish Civil War. In fact, I would say anarchist have been the most critical of revenge killings.
Some intellectually bankrupt people try to pull a couple of quotes to act like the CNT was behind the whole thing. It's funny because you always see the same quotes over and over again. It actually gets boring. These same quotes can be found in Bookchin's books but in context to how brutal the government was. If somebody killed my family or shot my friend in the back or tortured and raped my wife, I too would want payback. Great video!
Excellent vid as always BG! You are a great force for putting a moral and logical face for our chosen ideology.
However, there is an authoritarian slant to at least 2 of the big three religions. Christianity and Islam.
I guess we will face that when we get to it. But if you thought getting people to give up their exploitative property was hard, wait till we get to the cognitive dissonance of an authoritarian god in an otherwise free society.
Very well made video. Good job!
