Well in the original score, on the first page (before the actual music starts) Becker mentions that improvisation is strongly suggested, and he gave an example of what one could play the last time through section A- and this is what I played. As far as how to play it... build up chops!
T WILLS why is today the first time I'm seeing this video. I will miss you so much dude. I'm kinda glad I'm seeing this senior day, a new level of respect man.
The milwaukee youth symphony orchestra philharmonia percussion ensemble did this and it was a great piece. Not quite as fast lol....prolly like 1/2 as fast but still a great piece. Great job
I'm playing the xylo solo with my university percussion ensemble this march, and I was wondering where you got the lick at around 2 minutes. It's exactly the way Becker plays it and I'd like to incorporate into my performance. Great job by the way.
Thanks! As for the lick, I just listened to Becker's performance and took a couple bits and pieces that I liked that wouldn't seem too terribly unoriginal. So I took that lick, and wrote the rest of them (except the end which is in the music). However, it is not written down anywhere as far as I know. I just used my ear, with a piano and a pencil.
Good job! I'm gonna be playing this with my school percussion ensemble and I wanted to get a feel of the song so I can hear how it sounds with everyone.
Great performance! I personally think an up-tempo tune such as this deserves a staccato accompaniment, such as a snappy pianist, rather than the rather mushy-sounding marimbas, which seem to have too much sustain. Listen to the original 1925 recording of this with the composer, George Hamilton Green, on xylophone, and Frank Banta on piano. This recording is available in reissue on a 1993 CD: "Masters of the Xylophone".
Thanks! I actually have heard that recording, along with almost every other recording that G.H. Green has, haha. I also love ragtime, and Nexus, with Bob Becker, did the arrangement for this tune. While I agree that ragtime does fit better with piano accompaniment at times, I personally feel that the timbre and unique sound that comes from the marimba is a great touch to the ensemble. Of course we threw this together the week before
They sure are dyNASTY. Their vibes are the only things that sound even halfway decent. The synthetic wood instruments sound totally awful in heat, or in any other situation for that matter. But thanks for watching!
nice job, xylo dude! I'm playing the same solo in my percussion ensemble - i love the stuff you added! sounds great - ours is not even close to that, but then again, we're in high school - really enjoyed it! great post!
thanks dude. if you want some ideas to add in once you've learned what's written i'd suggest checking out the king of ragtime's recording bob becker on his cd ragtime concert. he's a ridiculous player that has great ideas and a marvelous sound. good luck in your ensemble, it's one of my favorite ragtimes to play.
Haha, thanks man. I've been playing for five years, and I'm currently in my sophomore year as a percussion major. If you want the music, order it online from steve weiss music or another sheet music service, it's not expensive. I don't have the ability to e-mail it to anybody, but thanks for the comments!
Great video...thanks for posting.
A real workout for all of you....excellent!!

we played it so it does not have the greatest quality, but that fundamental quality is still there. Besides which, no piano was available ;)
I do intend to play Valse Brillante by Becker with piano accompaniment at my upcoming junior recital though.

it's a shame you have to play on synthetic bars(marimbas).
Synthetic xylos aren't so bad though.

will do! thx alot!
jakeskier213 3 years ago
Umm, not bad, but where's the musicality? I got bored about 1 minute in. That, and the marimbas are way too loud for my taste.
UTKmusicmaker 4 years ago
Ya the synthetic marimbas ring so long that it really covers up a lot of the xylo intricacy going on :-/
BosPercussion 3 years ago
Yeah.... plus we never really rehearsed it so I never heard how truly loud those marimbists were.... but still the instruments suck.
