My singing teacher showed this song to me when I was 11 years old and we used to sing it together. 8 years later and that memory is still as strong as ever. This is a wonderful song.
I come from Appalachia and have always been told we descended from Scotch Irish, which were were people who were Irish who moved th Scotland, and were hated there, so the were outcasts from both Ireland and Scotland. The salt of the Earth. I was embarrassed to be a Hillbilly from WV when I was young, now I'm kinda proud of it. I've learned that the way we mis-pronounce some words such as "deesh" instead of dish is because of where we came, We don't go fishing, we go a feeshin' lol!
How do I get this version of Poor Paddy?? I have the newer Red Roses For Me, and this is not the same song?? I love this version as much!!! So, my question is (a long winded way of asking, too) where can I find this one?
@i1killed2god3 I don't know why it would. This song was released in 1984 on the Red Roses for me album and the Decemberists didn't even form as a band until 2000.
Portcak- This song is related to Irishmen that worked on the railway in mainland Britain, your obviously not a real Pogues fan, behave yourself my friend!
The irish fled there homeland to escape the iron fist and murder and brutality of the british empire.Only to do the exact same thing to the native american people....
@portercak in fairness the NA population was decimated long before most Irish people emigrated to the US(the 1840's) before that the irish-American tended to be indenture servants(one step up from slaves) or Scots-Irish(who were descended for the Protestant over-class in Ireland, and not-really irish at all) Learn your history before making comments
@LaMottaVSKeane Why don't you learn your history - Scots-Irish is a meaningless yankee term. If they're Presbyterian Irish then they'd refer to themselves as Ulsterman, not Irish and not 'Scots-Irish' - that terms means nothing in the British Isles.
@CharlesDilkes Actually Scots-Irish refers to early immigrants from both Scotland and Ireland that settled the same area of Pennsylvania, so it should be meaningless in the British Isles... also has nothing to do with a so-called Protestant over-class as a majority of these immigrants were both peasants and a mix of Protestant and Catholic descent.
maybe everyone should learn their history before telling other people to do so.
@sejemaset That's how dumb yanks refer to two distinct ethnic groups: they just conflate them - Scottish is distinct from Irish; when they say 'Scots-Irish' they're uttering a meangingless term - it's semantically meangingless, if they mean 'descended from Irish & Scottish' they should say so.
@CharlesDilkes Actually dumb yanks refer to those people as hillbillies, Scots-Irish is a term they use amongst themeselves, couldn't say why but the point is no one involved in the Scots-Irish vs Scots and Irish discussion has a clue what they are talking about.
16 stitches on my right arm and my right hand do not lie, it has been a great song and will always be. It happened back in ´95 in a club. Pogo was great and the guy who did it was the DJ. Hy, Dave from Stuttgart. ;)

In 1869, the year of the completetion of the Transcon Railroad, only 7.8% of Union Pacific employees were of Irish descent, while .00003% of Central Pacific employees were of Irish descent, proving that the role of the Irish in American railroad construction is greatly exaggerated.
And where in this song does it mention American railroad construction? "I landed on the Liverpool shore.." English railroad constrution Mr. Rail Mogul..
i saw the pogues last month at a small club in ATL. shane nailed every single song including this one. they sounded just like the old pogues. you can find a few clips of that show here on youtube
