i remember getting a DVD of Little Lulu or something like that (GOSH it was so long ago!) And it came with a bunch of Little Audrey Episodes. It was really Cute.
I find kind of weird, that the black servant woman is kind of depicted as a mentor figure for Audry. I don't know weather I should be disgusted at supposed depiction of black slavery or if I should applaud Famous Studios for being ever so slightly ahead of their time.
@TakumaMimura I can see where you're coming from, as some of these older cartoons tend to be a bit racially insensitive and I was worried that this one might be, as well, but I noticed that none of her facial features were really exaggerated in a way that could be considered racist. Also, if you think about it, the fact that she's African American doesn't necessarily make her a servant woman; she could be a friend of Audrey's parents who happens to be helping out around the house.
Jeez, I figure by 1951 black maid portrayals were considered taboo. MGM and WB had stopped doing black caricatures by this point. I guess Paramount was slow in the times.
@InvaderPet Actually, Mammy on the MGM series lasted one year longer than Audrey's maid -- 1952's "Push Button Kitty" was the last Tom & Jerry cartoon Hanna-Barbera used her in (Paramount's 1958 "Chew Chew Baby" would suffer from a race-related ban, but it really wasn't due to the design or coloring and more for the implications of the story).
These were syndicated a few years ago... without any of the songs the cartoon characters sang. I don't know upon whose wisdom that decision rests, but it ruined all these wonderful stories, and the richness and depth of the animation. I am SO GRATEFUL someone left the April Showers song in tact. These were so well made they deserved to be preserved in tact. The shadows in the animation may be gone, but there's so much more to enjoy. Thank you a thousand time for preserving their integrity.
Im 9 years old, and I know ALOT of 80's, 50's, 60's, 70's songs and shows! Especilliy the 90's kid shows! :D AND I LOVE THEM ALL!! I wish I could watch these on tv, and watch all the episodes. :(
One of my all time favorite cartoons ever and my favorite Little Audrey cartoon. Watched it as a young child in the 1960s and I still immediately think of the song and the cartoon when ever I hear the phrase April showers some 40+ years later. Thank you very much for sharing it.
Thanx for posting this. I remember seeing this on TV when I was quite a young child in the 1950s, and I had some rather clear memories of it, but I did not remember what character it was. Little Audrey. I remember the rainmaker squeezing the cloud quite clearly.
this was edited for the DVD release. WHERE DID YOU GET THIS?!?!?! I remember the edited when I was a kid, but... the beginning was not like that. The dvd does not have the 0:26, but the beginning was different when i was a kid, and did have the 0:29, but the official dvd does not have 0:00 - 0:30
5:55 little audrey's voice is transforms to betty boop's
So what part was censored, the scene with the maid? There were other Little Audrey episodes with that maid that were untouched that I know of and its said that it was this Harveytoon that was censored.
Thanks for putting this up. I remember watching this one when I was very little (early 60s) and it had a big influence on me as a kid. Have never forgotten that scene with the camels or the man getting a drop of water on his tongue.
How many kids blame themselves for stupid things because they misunderstand the connection between the way we would like things to be and the way they really are? Wishful thinking on its own never made anything happen.
@MrTalkingGames Too true. Harvey Entertainment owns half of the cartoons from Paramount's Famous Studios with the exception of Popeye, who's owned by A.A.P. and later by Turner Entertainment.
I remember this episode was really popular in the late 70's/early 80's during the west coast drought. All the kids were mad that Audrey made that wish.
Heh heh, The Rainmaker looks like an extremely obese Will Ferrel to me.
I've never been a huge fan of all of Famous Studios/Harveytoons' characters; a lot of them were just too forcibly and phonily complex for my taste. But I've always liked Little Audrey; she's such a cutie pie.
No, no, no... the little raindrop doesn't flip her off. He's giving the "O-K" sign, silly person. I don't think a cartoon character ever flipped anyone off before Fritz the Cat in the sixties, though I wouldn't have put it past Bugs Bunny...
Esto es un dibujo con verdadera conciencia ambientalista. Esta niña debería estar en Greenpeace y acabar con el calentamiento global que azota al planeta tierra.
This is one of many stories wherein someone wishes for no rain and gets undreamed-of consequences. One thing that made this stand out is Audrey's rendition of April Showers to the Rainmaker, which causes him to cry and thus ends the drought.I always think of this cartoon whenever I hear the song April Showers.
Back when I was a wee lad, you got three stations on TV if you were lucky - and none of our local ones showed many (if any) Harvey cartoons. (Harvey comic books were another matter - they were everywhere.) So I didn't see this until I was at university, when a local Louisville station started carrying them.
Note for younger viewers: Audrey's nanny is Petunia, and she's based on award-winning actress Hattie McDaniel.
If anybody out there has the one with the flying saucers, bring it! From what I remember, Audrey has to fight aliens, and they're armed with this death ray that wipes out everything.

I've never seen the Audrey version of the Paramount star opening. It's simply amazing to be able to see it! Thank you both for this, and your wonderful blog articles.
