@zac242 Maybe from an acting perspective, but not from the actual vocal performance perspective. Michael is without a doubt the strongest singing Edna, but I do agree that Harvey does have the edge on the role when it comes to the overall performance and interpretation of the role. :)
OMG I WENT TO SEE THIS ON SATURDAYY. its awsome!! Its better with the people i saw tho!. i saw micheal ball and ben ellis and verity rishworth and loads of awsome ones!! absolutley fancastic!
saw the matinee show yesterday, it was an understudy show mostly but it was amazing. Met Charlotte, Michael Vinsin who was Link and Verity, all so friendly. Sandra was amazing as Motormouth. am hoping that i can see the show again soon.
i went to see this in london and i was so dissapointed cos its totally overated and the dancing was awful and so was the singing THIS IS MY OPINION SO PLEASE DONT THROW ABUSE AT ME
Hairspray at the West End rocks. I totally didn't expect the cast to be as good. I think I'll much prefer the London cast album if it's released, compared to the original Broadway version. Harvey Fierstein does seem funny as Edna but his croaky voice is not so great to listen to, I find. Michael Ball was phenomenal! Reminded me almost of how Divine would play Edna now on stage. He was so good. I saw the understudy Tracy so can't comment but she was good as well. Hope they release a CD soon!

see i gotta disagree. i think michael ball is not very good at all...he can't help but overdo EVERY line he sings. sometimes less is more or at least some variety.
and motormouth needs to really learn how to take a breath and not be so puffed out
i can see your point but i agree with lola1125, Michael is brilliant, he can sing unlike most Edna's (Fierstein 4 example) and i fink its better to over do it wen your a man playing a woman in a fat suit.
I have seen the show three times now and I have to disagree with you thomfish06.
Michael is underplaying his singing all the way through the show. He has a wonderful voice, which is hard to hide but he is Edna from the moment he steps on to the stage.

On the performance I saw, the mother started cracking up on stage and completely broke character b/c the father was being TOO flirty with him...
Everyone clapped... it was so funny... they were just standing there.

i agree with you. Did harvey like "croak" on purpose??
theemaestro576 3 years ago
No. That's his real voice. If you listen to him enough, he is a lot better. At first I didn't like him, but I love him as Edna now.

his real voice has that lisp and so it carries on when he tried to sound like a woman, you can even hear it on mrs. doubtfire.
