I find It amusing that this version of the song, which depicts the Chinese as the monsters is still on youtube, but a superior version, which is more universal is blocked.
I had the song at top volume in my room when my dad asked me if I knew what the song was saying. I didn't care. I just liked the beat. He then gave me a whole lesson on DeGaulle, France, jeux sans frontieres, and the games. I could have cared less then, but now I listen to a song that I still like and realize that, holy shit, my dad knew something when I was a kid that knew everything and older people are so full of it.
The lyrics are seen as a critique of nationalism and war, which the song portrays as essentially childish. The tag line of the song, "Games without frontiers, war without tears" is a comment on the sublimation of the rivalries within Europe, caused by centuries of war, in a meaningless game
No, no, no. You people have it all wrong. They're singing, "She's so popular." Jeez, aren't you listening?

Jeux sans frontieres means "games without frontiers" or "games without borders".
"Its a knockout" was a gameshow started in 1965 where countries in Europe wore silly costumes and competed in silly games (just like a gameshow).
This was all started by an idea from French President Charles De Gaulle. He hoped it would make a friendship between France and Germany.
3 guys from France made the game expand throughout Europe.
Believe me. I know. I was 15 when this song came out.
