Thanks. This is the best version of the 18 I found posted on Youtube. Dynamics and diction are outstanding. One correction to words posted for the second stanza: substitute "thy" or "thine" for "his" in each case. Issac Watt's transcription of the 23rd Psalm read "thy presence", "thy hand" and "thine oil". 210 years later in 1930 Virgil Thomson created this lovely SATB arrangement.
lyrics by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), music by Wm B. Bradbury (1816-1868), arr. by Virgil Thomson (1896-1989)
Watts was an English non-conformist, a prolific writer of hymns, and the father of English hymnody. Wm. B. Bradbury was an antebellum American composer of Gospel songs and hymns. His setting of “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” first appeared in Walker’s Southern Harmony, published in 1835. Virgil Thomson was an American composer, music critic, and mentor to Leonard Bernstein.
@raybooth The name of Bradbury's tune is, of all things, 'Resignation'. Do you have any idea why he picked that name for this tune? There's usually a story behind the tune name, just as there usually is behind the composing of the tune itself.
I learned this arrangement almost five decades ago, and I still cannot help but hear it in my head whenever I hear this Psalm, or the hymn version (as we sang it this a.m. in church). (Not to mention still being able to sing my part! LOL!)
Depending on the individual voice, most tenors sing it in falsetto. As a baritone I would imagine you would be more comfortable singing the bass line (it rocks!)
i'm singing this in my church choir. i'm a baritone, so i usually sing tenor or bass, whichever is more comfortable. could you please tell me how your tenors sang those high A's and G's??? curious?
@heresmycardjoker I am in the same situation at my church. I am the bass and tenor section. I prefer Bass but there are times when the tenor line is needed. [like when that's where the melody is]
Thanks so much for posting. I used to sing this song in chorus in high school, and we sang it when we lost one of our students...such a beautiful song...

I have no idea why he chose that name (or whether he, in fact, was the one who attached that name to the tune.)
