Fantastic lesson! You explain the pick thing right off the bat, yet an endless parade of dumbasses is leaving comments about how you're supposed to fingerpick.
That was a good lesson, but I think something is lost by playing with a pick. I've tried this solo over the years, and it never seems to sound right without the proper finger picking. Just my opinion!
why dont you use ur fingers. i always played with a pick and it took me like a week to learn the beginning to the end of the first solo with my fingers. its fairly easy. it sounds alot better too
I explained that in the beginning of the video. I assumed that most people are used to playing with a pick, not their fingers, so I taught it from that perspective. I also assumed that a person experienced with fingerpicking could easily transpose this lesson to accommodate that style, since the left hand wouldn't change at all. This way the lesson was accessible by both inexperienced, and more seasoned players. When I perform this, I play with my fingers.
thank you, i didnt agree with what u did for the bflatm slide it just didnt sound right to my ears, so im going to noodle around and find something i like, but hell, it fits. thx man
exactly what i thought... Mr Knoffler would be ashamed.... You have 1 pick... or three active plucking fingers.... watch the master..... thats why it looks easy.... but, of course it isn't... and that why mark knoffler is guitar GOD....
thanx, it took some time and patients to learn because you go a little fast but after pausing a little and rewinding the video it does make sense in the end. i've only been playing for a year and i think yuo did a wonderful job THANK YOU
im not tryign to be a dick, you rock vandeilly your a bad mofo. i just was kinda let down hopin you would punk this one like you the rest that you do..
I don't understand this. Maybe I've played this song too much but what you're doing here isn't even close to the feeling it's supposed to have. You also missed many notes... God, throw away the pick! The key to Mark's style is the fingerpicking vibe and his feeling while playing every note. I think you should consider that before posting a dire strait's "lesson". Sorry for being so straight-forward, I appreciate your effort making this video, but if you're gonna "teach", please, do it properly.
i've never understood people's rote and ritualistic adherence to a song - how about making it your own? none of you guys will ever be knophler so relax, take it down a notch sootty, and have some fun. one of the reasons i dug jimi so much was that of all the songs in my collection of his - he hardly played them the same way twice. no need to be a snob about playing the guitar...
I see your point. On the other hand, there may be people who don't want to invest the time to master finger picking, but would still enjoy playing and can use this video. Maybe it should be advertised as such.
Neosonic, very good job. I mean i m not a begginner n u hav improved my playing. Do u hav the middle solo and the licks after 1st solo n before the last one? I know all song but i would lik to compare with your playing ...
hi man. you play very well the guitar but u must try to show the essence of the song, coz u played the song very fast but it hadnt the exactly rhythm of this song.
It's hard to play exactly in rhythm when I have no metronome or backing track, my goal was to just give people a starting point to learn to play it themselves without having to use tabs, but you're right, it's hardly perfect
Not really because students have always played with their fingers. The plectrum is a style that they have had to leard, just like Travis Style. but it can be played using Just the thumb and first finger quite easily. I have a student who never really played finger style before, but learned the song in one afternoon. Granted it wasn't perfect, but it is now. That was in July. And he is 14.
When I took lessons, I started with a pick, and have found this to be pretty common. Feel free to make your own video if you don't find this one satisfactory, I've had plenty of feedback that this style was preferred before I made it.
It's easier to teach using a pick for less experienced players to learn, but most of the licks in that and the 2nd solo really lend themselves to fingerpicking
You are completely out of position. Solo I starts in 6th position on the second (b) string. Right at 38 sec point you are playing an A arpeggio in ninth possition. The first two notes (e abd a) are not fretted, they are 12th fret harmonics. The fretted Bb to C arpeggios are in third and fifth position and the C is a raked chord not picked. Much easier to play and teach. And finger style is actually easier to play than a plectrum. Been teaching 10 yrs, playing 30.
Well, I never claimed note for note, take it for what it is.... I really don't care if it's 100% accurate, it's fun to play, that's the way I arranged it, and that's really all I care about
fingerstyle is easier for me to play on this... but for someone who has no idea how to play fingerstyle, can learn it with a pick, since that's what they're used to.... anyone familiar with fingerstyle should hav
thanks, i'm using the clean channel on a marshall jcm2000 TSL-60 head, through a 1960A cab with G12T-75 stock speakers, neck and middle pickup position.
no, I do not have tabs, I try not to use them. I'd recommend you stick to the pause/play video method, because you're training your ear that way instead of using tabs to cheat ;-)
you're welcome!! check out the second solo on vanderbilly (dot) com, we do free guitar lessons there!
yeah, i was going for my best 'ear' approximation to give people a good starting point at least for this, but you're right, a lot of the parts of this solo lend themselves to finger-picking
Yeah, i can definitely see how playing with the pick isn't quite as soft a sound as using fingers, on the same token, for learning purposes i think you made the right decision ;-). Also, very well done. Anybody who can play Knopfler is awesome in my book.
thanks... and yeah I figured it was easier to learn with a pick, however, the second solo especially lends itself to finger-picking (i have that lesson available on vanderbilly dot com if you're interested)
Please read the description, this is a sample lesson that I made for vanderbilly dot com, which I encourage anyone looking for great free and accurate video lessons to check out, no tabs, that's what ears are for! ;-)
