Thanx a lot @brazil70. ;) I've found it because I recorded the show on a french channel a long time ago! ;) COuldn't remember. Thanx for the reply. ;)
Was there.. Buddy got some tickets. Right result. Amazing - at BBC TV Centre. O.C.S. Steve and Damon with foxy orchestra section! Check out the spats - only Miguel Angel Jimenez can carry those off too.
hey man i respect ur opinion...every one has their own particular faves from the master.....he has so many great tracks.......my top 5.....sunflower,invisible,clues,country,foot of the mountain........awesome! :) knight this man he deserves it so much!! ARISE.....SIR PAUL WELLER :)
I just found this song today...When it comes to Mr.Weller, I always want more! He's so prolific, and so potent, whether he's rocking us or serenading us with his beautiful, sensual (but always classy) ballads. I love the lush instrumentation on this one, including the old synth sound near 4:00.! Rock on, Paul!
A DVD of Weller performances on Jools is supposed to be coming out in November. All I can say is that this had better be on it! Absolutely incredible!
I remember watching this on TV as a 12 yr old guitar player - I was so blown away by Steve White I decided the drum kit was the way to go. I now make a living playing drums.
No-one plays guitar like Weller. I'm not saying he's the best, but no-one can play rhtymn like him. Jools Holland said watching this performance was like standing next to a nuclear reactor.
Fun fact. When the Jam split up, after 3 number ones, and classics like Town Called Malice, Going Underground and That's Entertainment, Weller was just 21.
Oh my god I LOVE this performance of this song - Weller's energy, White mistakedly thinking the song had ended and having to recover and even the cellist's obvious love of the song. The whole thing makes the hairs on my neck stand up.
I am seeing him in Nov in MEN Manchester, I hope he's still got it.
Like if you were only half the guitarist Steve Cradock is pothead - do your yourself afavour and check out Ocean Colour Scene and take a lesson from the cream of British music.
My god I haven't seen this in years. The energy level was so high, it made my hairs stand up. Weller is God. I also love the little bit at 4:58 where Steve White thinks they've finished but then realises they've got one little bit more to do. Thanks for posting this!!
What energy! Weller and his band are spot on. Weller is fucking brillant. I will never understand why he never made it big in America! Thank you for the post.
He did tour in America in the early Jam days, but he never hit it big there. Going Underground when straight in at number 1 whilst he was on tour in America, and thought fuck it, and came straight home to Top of the Pops lol. He says that was the end any popularity the Jam had in the US lol.
From Steve Marriott and Tin Soldier to Paul Weller and Whirlpool's end...it's called evolution. The question is...who can surpass Weller? I hope I live long enough! Simply excellent.
I've got an old videotape I made of this show/concert back when it was broadcast on MuchMusic back about 15 years ago. I'm frantically trying to get a dvd of it as I'm afraid of the tape quality going downhill. Still no luck but I'll keep looking! :) This song was the highlight of the show I think. Love the way Weller and Cradock 'keep the song" going at around the 4:51 area. Whitey is looking around at them, then figures it out and gets it all going again...awesome!
There is no other artist in world music who gets such a rocking reaction to his music and performance from both the audience and his backing band. Look at the way both the brass and string sections are so involved in the performance. In utter awe. Fantastic.
it could be something called moog or mini-moog, and that part is actually from another track, gtr-moog jam, which you can find in the demos-disc of the album anniversary deluxe edition of 2005.
seen him live it is a sight to behold he is a musical genius all hail the modfather !!!

lovely point.
same thing could be said for steve white. his drum playing isnt just exquisite, he has an odd energy and focus when playing.
lekkerdirection 3 years ago
Minor point but the Jam split in 1982 and as Weller is 50 this year then he would've been 24, not 21.
But still, a remarkable achievement whether 21 or 24.
