Betty Carter is my preferred jazz singer, because of her spontaneity, feeling of freedom, relaxed and funny at the same time. A strong personality too.
She came to Seville in 1993 with Geri Allen (piano) and Jack Dejonnette (Bass).
Ms Betty Carter came to Australia. I've heard her a few times. Nice always. She signed her poster and so did her trio. Must have it framed soon. Thanks for this on You Tube.
I have only really teared up at two musicians when they passed- Miles Davis ( my sons middle name is Miles) and Betty Carter , HRH ( yea, bigger than the Queen, lol).Im a singer that has had the best of both worlds, but jazz by the greats, there is NOTHING better, thanks for this post diegodobini2..........
One of my all-time favorite Betty performances. Done as a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, of course, Betty made the song her own. Her singing is distilled down to its essence, using silences and a limited range of notes. A real lesson in jazz singing. Towards the end, when she throws in a quote from Ella's famous recordings of the song, I just about fell over. Knowing that Betty preferred to avoid musical quotes, it was a meaningful tribute....
I always come back for more of this .

Sounds like one of the stereo audio channels got inverted somewhere along the way. Flipping to mono destroys it.

Sorry for the oversight. I'm getting old.
Of course, jack dejohnette was the drummer.
I've seen him in two other occassions in Spain touring with Pat Metheny group.
The bass was played, I cant remember well, I think by Dave Holland, but I'm not sure.

Great stuff from Betty. The look she gave Roy was just too hip! Dig how Christian McBride looks at Roy when Betty's at full tilt.
