  • Thanks for the info. I do have another question for ya. I have 8 netgear switches connected with fiber. I will have 2 vlan's vlan10 for data and vlan 20 for voip. Is this the correct way to set this up... Vlan10 has all ports untagged, except for 48, it is tagged. This is the port that will connect to my other switch. Then for vlan 20 do I leave all ports utagged also or do I tag those for voip? port 48 is my trunk port so it needs to be tagged with all vlans correct?

You need to leave VLAN 10 untagged but tag all other VLAN's on the switch including 20. Remember the VLAN wont effectively work unless you have voip phones that are configured to work on VLAN 20. Remember that you'll need to leave 1 port on each switch default PVID of 1 so you can still mange them since you don't have any routing or VLAN aware NIC's. The trunk port '48' in your case needs to be tagged in every VLAN including 10.

  • I think that was a great video, I have just taken over a network, that is getting new switches Netgear GS748TP connected via fiber and a 50 user Avaya voip system. My Question is when I change the PVID to 10 for all the ports how do I manage the switch? Should I leave 1 port on the original PVID and just plug in when I need to manage it? Before I watched this I did change all the PVID and lost access to the switch. Once again thanks for a great vid. I have watched many others and this was great!

Sorry for the delay. But yes you would want to keep one port in the PVID of 1 so that you can manage the switch. On newer Netgear switches you can change the managment VLAN. Another way to solve this issue is leave one port untagged in vland 1 with a PVID of 1 and untag all the other VLAN's in that port. Now here the trick. You need to get a NIC that is VLAN aware to plug in to this port and you can manage all the VLAN's from one administrativ computer. Hope this helps.
