  • Steve Waugh gold right there. I watched every ball of that innings. Shaky early and then just went to town on the poor old poms. After looking crap for the first hour he hit a off/straight drive that was effortless and just held the pose. Richi Benaud said I swear that was nothing more than a defensive push. Post that drive it was 10+ years of torment for the poms every time s.waugh walked to the crease in ashes battles. Please post more of this innings.

  • Steve Waugh is simply the master of this game.

He just do things so easily that it looks simple, but they aren't.

Steve Waugh the great was a very very very good student of this game :)

    I love watching him.

  • that was a great square cut there, still waiting on the drive i was promised

  • WHACK !!!! GREAT JUDGE OF THE PITCH REALLY LATE!! he was on fire in 89 in england

  • ahhhh, bliss!

  • Happened to hear a lot about Mark, but Steve is just & Just Inc............

  • Who's this idiot who loves bowling short and wide so much, especially at his military-medium pace? Derek Pringle?

  • @Imrankniazi,

    Cricket is a beautiful game.

And yes, Derek Pringle was a mediocre cricketer to say the least, but is there a need for such rabble rousing insults?

You come across as very angry. Enjoy cricket and stop tugging your hair, old boy!

And what a shot by Mr. Waugh!!

  • @cquilty1 And you, cquilty1, just had to get that in, didn't ya? A polite, to the point reply would've been nice (not that you, specifically, were asked) but here we are spilling our bigoted guts all over the poor bloke who, by all accounts, may just be more docile than your dead follicles.

  • @Lavazzacuppa,

Thank you for your post, but I'm not exactly sure what has offended you so.

    Would you please explain further.

  • @cquilty1 He's hardly rabble rousing or coming across as angry. Hardly subtle or Nabakovian in your pickup.

  • @i'llaveanicehotcuppa,

Why the need to refer to Derek Pringle as an "idiot?" Is that really necessary?

And why are you so keen to spring to Imrankniazi's defense? Are you one and the same?

Nabakov only has one good book and we both know which one. Still, nice to see Vladimir being used in a YouTube post, particularly in a cricket video.

  • 1. Backfoot drive

    2. Cut.

  • Backfoot cover drive

  • you just open the face of the bat through a backfoot off-drive. but yeah, fucking hard to play, and if you make contact it's usually a nick through to the cordon.

btw that steve's playing a cut shot.

  • I remember my dad telling, steve just used to drive them into the ground, ;) he is gold.

  • there is no such thing as square drive..

    its called square cut...

there are 2 types of square cuts behind point and in front of point...

both of those shots in this video are behind point square cuts...

    steve waugh = legend!

  • The square drive is off the front foot.

  • its off both, back and front

all drives can be played off the backfoot

  • No they can not. There is no such thing as a back foot square drive. This is the best way to get out as you will try to drive through point on the back foot, if you know anything about cricket you would know this is wrong, playing away from your body.

  • Im pretty sure the backfoot square drive is similar to the cut-shot, its just played a bit closer to the body. however wrong you think it may be, its still classed as a shot.

  • if im wrong, i apologise, just sharing my thoughts.

Great video btw, class player steve waugh

  • A 'drive' describes the vertical arc movement of the bat, not the placement. You can drive off the back foot towards point, in which case there's nothing wrong with calling it a back-foot square drive. Christ, even in the commentary Ian Chappell calls it a back-foot drive. He knows something about cricket.

  • In this clip he plays a backfoot cover drive.

  • Absolutely correct. Ian Chappell calls it correctly as a backfoot-square-drive because it is due to the nature of the swing from vertical position at the top and down toward the ground whereas a square cut motion is from behind the back in a horizontal position. So those people who comment that there is no such thing better study cricket bio-mechanics and physics more.

  • Square drive can be front or back foot.

Front foot is more like a cover drive, but with an angled bat to get it through gully/point region

Backfoot square drive is close to a cut-shot. Only its generally closer to your body, and isn't done with a horizontal bat - its more virtical.

  • Tugga was the best! My favourite batsman to watch...the coolest customer ever!

  • Steve Waugh and Terry Alderman won those Ashes.

  • That's not a square cut. It is imperative that the bat is horizontal in case of a square-cut.

These shots are back-foot punches or some prefer to call them back-foot drives.

  • the video actually says square-drive

    eyes open boy

  • The uploader seems to have changed it now. Earlier it said square-cut. My eyes are very much open, thank you!

  • square drives are on the front foot that shot was on the back foot making it a square cut

  • The first shot reminds me of a newspaper picture of the STeve Waugh backfoot square drive I used to have on my wall.

Nice, but it's nothing compared to the backfoot square drive for six he hit in some one day game at Melbourne.

  • hmm, square cut, no? off the back foot. I thought drives were off the front foot.

  • You can drive off the back foot:)
