@revup67 No they were not, they were a session group lead by Roger Greenaway and Tony Burrows, both of whom had many other hits in both the US and UK, not just under the White Plains name, but with groups like The First Class, Edison Lighthouse, The Kestrels, and many others. As Burrows himself once put it "If I am a one hit wonder, i'm the only one whose done it multiple times".
@FabFM well I see your point but I am not referring to Tony Burrows or Roger Greenway but more specificly to "White Plains" as this is the name of the band on the record label, the band that charted, etc. They aren't called Tony Burrows and White Plains. Here in the US (where this posting was uploaded), White Plains had only one Billboard Top 20 hit (one other at #82). We dont' have access to how well they did in every other country. I am familiar with Tonys other bands-thanks
@revup67 You may be familiar with tony other bands, and a song at ~82 by White Plains means then they are not a one hit wonder. Billboard considers a song a hit if it charts inside the hot 100, or on one of their other major charts. A one hit wonder would be Zager and Evans - one #1 and then nothing else on the hot 100 at all, ever. Cheers!
@FabFM first, good debate here. I am very familiar with the Billboard books and actually started working with them to distribute in digital format in the early 90's but never came to fruition. I've also got my FCC and was a DJ in oldies clubs and FM radio. Technically you are correct at #82 though also note billboard has other books such as Top 40. A Top 40 hit was a verbal classification used decades ago when AM was in its heyday. (part 2 below)
@FabFM Additionally, a Top 40 hit in NYC may not have been a Top 40 in Denver or LA as charts were regional and compiled to the Billboard national Top 100. This #82 may not have made a local Top 100 in many major cities. Hence a song called "I Spy" by Jamo Thomas reached #98 in 1966 - I recall it well. Though they played the hell out of it in the NYC area and probably not many other places. WABC AM sent me some 60's playlists. There are songs on these lists that are not in BB Top 100.
White Plains, Edison Lighthouse, The Pipkins & First Class were all fronted by British studio singer Tony Burrows. He was the british version of america's Ron Dante of the Archies and Cufflinks. Both guys had superb bubble gum pop rock voices.

@cathode1990 BTW another name has surfaced -- Greenaway? Let's clear it up The recorded version was sung by whom >> Who is this in the video? We know he is lip syncing :::who is Tony? Who is Robin?? and who is Greenaway??T
Tony Burrows was a great session singer. Also had his own REAL band (First Class) Got nowhere. One time he was lead on 5 different Top 10 HITS at same time-credited to different bands - three in same edition of TOTP. Often, a real, "working" band went out under new name to capitalise on "their" hit - Edison Lighthouse for one. Bands were often formed AFTER record started 2 chart. That's show biz guys. Tony's still around & as great a voice as ever. Shame he's not the superstar he deserved to be.
Is that Greenaway on lead??He also sings lead on a black and white clip with Burrows to the left doing harmonies. But I have been told Burrows sang lead on the record .. Why would another singer appear to sing the lead while the original singer on recording[from what I gather] does harmonies?? Very strange and confusing!
I have been told by a DJ that the lead singer here also sang lead for Edison Lighthouse's "Love grows where my Rosemary goes". They sure as heck sound exactly alike. Listen to EL sing that song and then relisten to WP sing this one and you'll see what I mean.

I mean, I can feel your enthusiasm. And having heard this song as you did, when it came out, that is, I know what it's like for a song to make it through the decades intact in one's mind. Ah, for the simple, lasting pleasures in life.
Great song from a band that actually lasted from 1969 (when this song was recorded) until 1976. This was their biggest hit and I still think about it from time to time. Catchy lyrics and music.
Sorry revup69 but they where hardly one hit wonders. They made lots of wonderful bouncy happy music.Lets all go back to those wonderful days.nostalgia is not what it used to be!! Hey Ho.lol
White Plains were not one-hit wonders in the UK. Sadly Pete Nelson one of the vocalists in the band, plus the Flowerpotmen. Is no longer with us, he died a few years ago. RIP Pete....
Looks like the original record was played for this though, the horns and the woman's voice at the end of the song.
Elton John back in the early '70s did an all hits album of other people, Mungo Jerry, Creedence Clearwater, Yellow River, United We stand, Young gifted and black, I'm a neanderthal (or apeman, I don't have it on me) and he does "My baby loves love" and his version is pretty good.
Well, the reason why the record version was playing over White Plains performance is because this was filmed to be one of those rare first half of the 1970's promotional music videos. Music videos, in 1970, still had a long way to go to get to the music videos originally shown on MTV and VH1 -- and even those in the later half of the 1970's.

Love this song but wondering how come Tony Burrows isn't in the video. Enjoyed this tho. I think the confusion between Tony Burrows & Flying Machine may be because they both had out songs at the same time..
Going off the top of my head, I believe the lead singer of Flying Machine was Tony Warren and that might have led to some confusion between him and Tony Burrows.
No jameycruz, Tony Burrow didn't sing 'Smile A Little Smile For me, Rosemarie'. That song was done by a group called 'The Flying Machine' or just 'Flying Machine'. I know there was some dispute back then regarding that group name because James Taylor was also in another completely different group with same name. I believe Smile A Little Smile came out around Sept '69
PS - Ron Dante was the US sort of speak version of Tony Burrows. Around the same time he sang on "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies. He also sang "Tracy" by the Cuff Links" and was also the Lead singer of the Detergents who had a single on the Roulette label (name escapes me at moment)
