  • tales of the black freighter was never supposed to be stand alone story. it was supposed to be intertwined with the main story to reference Armageddon and the intensifying situation with the soviets in the novel

  • @brastmonkey have you seen watchmen the ultimate cut edition? they actually intertwined black freighter into the movie and it worked well.

  • In the book, I love how you(or just me) felt that Tales of the Black Freighter is Rorschach metaphor ....and it isn't, eventually.

  • lol too many watchmen experts that watched the movie instead of reading the graphic novel...this animation is amazing..... i mainly enjoy its narrative. and grimness. th whole story within a story idea is great...reminds me of neil gaimens The sandman. he loved telling stories within stories within stories

  • what up IGN hahahahahahaha

  • This is one of the reasons I hated this movie!!!

All the comments of people asking what's this got to do with Watchmen.

Heads no this sucky movie more than the novel, because of some Hollywood hype. Black Freighter was CRAZY relevant in the novel. Moore > Snyder

  • What the FUCK does this shit have to do with Watchmen?!? Its not even the same era!!!

  • @MrPrototypz Its a story within the comic of Watchmen that symbolizes the characters plights.

  • @RandomEarthCinema Oh....Why would anyone watch this then? I mean, isnt it a HUGE waste of money?

  • @MrPrototypz you're an idiot

  • @codenameGIZM0 Con-fucking-gratulations! You just wasted your time making a really stupid, non-sense making empty comment! Now go enjoy your shallownessm by trolling other people, troll!

  • @MrPrototypz if you had read watchmen, you'd know what it has to do with it. this guy below me (g0dly0ne) explains the metaphore best. given alan moore's genius, you'd have to be an idiot to think that it has nothing to do with watchmen and serves no purpose. also what does setting have to do with anything? it's comic book a kid reads in the street; it was never part of the main narrative, but serves instead to shed light on the internal struggle of the villain.

    ergo you're an idiot.

  • @codenameGIZM0 Jesus your a fucking moron! Im a idiot for not fucking knowing?! And for not reading something i dont like?! You goddamn hypocrite. And now i already know that its trying to fill a gap to the comics. I mean, its gone a goddamn month! Someone already explained. You just wasted valuable time.

  • @MrPrototypz lol 'valuable time', if you're not happy, stop replying. and yeah you're an idiot for not having read the graphic novel and for not liking it (also how do you know you don't like it if you haven't read it).

  • watchmen was incredible people didn't appreciate that movie :(

  • it ruined the comic book dude. Go read the book, then you will STFU about the movie.

  • i read the comic i liked it so don't tell me wat's good my dude in fact the movie was wat made me read the comic i liked both so i think you should take your own advice and STFU

  • During the novel, there was this kind of comic within a comic story about a pirate ship going on. It was sort of interesting, but even as a hardcore Watchmen fan, I didn't miss it in the movie.

  • @raterroyale same i dont think the stuff they missed out the movie was the most important and think how long it would have been if they were in

  • @raterroyale The fact that the Black Freighter story works so well in the comic as a story within a story and how it reflects what Ozymandias and all the other characters are going through is a big reason that the Watchmen movie for me always comes up short to the original comic, although to be honest even in the " Watchmen motion comic" it just didn't work as well as reading the story on the page. I don't envy the man who will eventually I'm sure try to download Watchmen in an I- book format.

  • Booo! Verison sucks! Fuck adds!

  • WTF doese the story have to do with the watchmen story

  • read the watchem comics... the answer is there ;)

  • Don't want to sound ignorant or anything, but does the black freighter draw great influence from coleridge's "ancient mariner"?

  • i watched this and it only went for like 30

    minutes :l

  • The reviewer ought to have reviewed the material, rather than the medium.

Which makes him a massive wanker.

  • dude this wasn't really a review it was more whining about how the blue ray sux this is a bunch of bull shit

  • It's John Stewart!!!

    XD

  • amazing

  • They should've promoted the Under The Hood thing more.

I like Under The Hood a lot more.

Black Freighter is great too, but it doesn't work as well without the film.

  • um no animated movies are better they dont fuck up shit like transformers the live movie was garbage but the cartoon movie was amazing and animated movies have more plot and story telling then any hollywood flick

  • cartoons rule

  • That very much depends on the person that makes the movie sir.

  • This is true.

  • @Rampagelil, i'll agree that sometimes animated movies are better, but other times it just seems stupid. and transformers wasn't garbage, sure the animated was better but the real life movie was not garbage as you say. now the second one, they fucked up jetfire, as i remember he wasn't a decipticon, correct? and also wasn't he a rocket? not a jet?

  • @Rampagelil don't forget Batman: The Animated Series! one of the best cartoon comic book series's of all time. they even influenced Harley Quinn into the comic books which has never been done before in comic book animation history.

  • @Rampagelil UM OK.

  • @Rampagelil wahts wrong with the live action transformers ?

  • @SuperMicklovin It's a long story I'm sick of explaining. I'm gonna cut it short No story the transformers look like shit it should be about the transformers and not the humans and the transformers have no emotion believe me I have many more reasons.

  • @Rampagelil neither did the robots in the 1986 flick. robots dont have emotions

  • @SuperMicklovin Um are you fucking retarded that was the whole point of transformers that's what made them different infact in the first episode the announcer says robots who can THINK AND FEEL because they had emotion also you obviously never watched that movie because the scene where optimus dies is CLEARLY emotion filled.

  • @Rampagelil yep I'm retarded that's why I'm on YouTube on a computer i know how to use perfectly right ? yeah I'm retarted because I liked a live action transformers more than some 80's flick that was made b4 i was even born. and if the transformers didn't have emotion they wouldn't have given too shits about earth the human race and the death of jazz

  • @Rampagelil Okay jackass being able to use a computer doesn't have anything to do with not being retarded. No they didn't give to shits about jazz you know what they did? They go oh jazz died and they sway his body left and right. Wow that's some great emotion. How about every scene in the real transformers movie where every scene has emotion.

  • this is sooooo fucked up...

  • NO U

  • is the steel-book edition from Best Buy the only version of the dvd that has a digital copy?

  • How long is the animated movie? Because I'm pretty sure the plot wasn't very long and it was only metioned in like 5 chapters as I recall.

  • I liked the black green lanturn...

  • that kind of makes sence

  • it was... the small boy reads it, and is one of two massively recurring characters, the small boy and the newsvender(from the graphic novel) they got cut from the movie

  • Then you are obviously mentally retarded because there are clear parallels between the main character of "Tales of the Black Freighter" and many of the heroes in "Watchmen," such as Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias, and there are numerous metaphors for what is going on in the comic.

For example, the main character killing his wife when trying to kill the pirates who took over his town is supposed to represent the damage done by Veidt's plot.

Clearly you can't think on those levels.

  • It's very related with Watchmen, it's a metaphor for what Ozymandias is going through.

For instance, the sailor's sail that he uses on his boat has a bloodstain similar to that of Rorschach's mask. This is symbolic of Adrian's betrayal in order to gain what he felt as the greater good. In the black freighter, the sailor, driven mad by evil becomes evil in order to combat it. In doing so, he loses all that he holds dear. The same is true of Ozymandias. It's a allegorical story.

  • i noticed those things about it. but i was watching it expecting it to be a prequil that had something to do with the watchmen storyline. thats all i ment.

  • really? I thought the sailor represented more of Rorschach than Ozymandias.

  • It's meant to represent a lot of people, including Osterman.

  • That's because you have to read the comic to understand how it relates with Watchmen . . . duh.

  • I bought this from Best Buy the other day and found out that this will be included in the release of the Watchman movie, and even included IN the movie as its supposed be, kinda like a directors cut. They didn't include it in the theatrical release due to time. So I returned it, not wanting to get this twice. Its 17 bucks i can spend elsewhere

  • Saw this a couple days ago....pretty good, but these "Legends" pictures are all starting to feel the same. Dark and gory, kind of just gimmicky....the ending was predictable as well. But still a decent animation film.

I'm surprised IGN would even review this, maybe just for the sake of the Watchmen popularity.

  • Looks like the animation is in top form, but lets just hope the story line fits in with it.

  • can watch this for free online, want links just ask DVD quality also

  • i hated the pirate story when i first read watchmen. really detracted from the superhero action.

  • I don't get what this movie has to do with watchmen

  • it's a comic book within the graphic novel which one of the characters reads, and parallels alot of the stuff going on in watchmen with metaphors and stuff

  • Read the book

  • jo mothas first
