this type damage comes from spinning very heavy loads, Like blankets and rugs, and quilts. These washers were never intended to wash more then 30 lbs of wet luandry....
@BoyneMaiden how is it everything thats cheap, yet you just said it may have been built with some quality? But whatever you mean, i will have this direct drive washer for years on end, screw the new HE energy star, with millions of sensors to wash clothes
@BoyneMaiden ............also i need to get a new water selector, because sometimes it can get stuck slightly off the notch for the water selector and it over fills, but ive been keeping a close eye on the nob so it don't do that again.
@BoyneMaiden Im not sure which year it was built but i belive it was like very late 90's like 98 or 99 maybe even the 2000 but more than likely the late 90's so its going on 12 years old or so. Still works except some stuff is broke and getting weak, i bought replacement parts to keep the old thing going, new lid switch, the agitator dog paws, and a clutch kit, because mine is having trouble getting up to speed and takes off slow, but no funny noises or anything.....................
My Whirlpool is doing exactly the same thing. I can fix it but would love a shorcut. Your comment talks about both aligning the drive block and replacing the basket drive - which of these, if either, solved this problem. Can you re-type the solution more clearly - Thanks!
Hi I know exactly what your are talking about my Kenmore is doing the same thinag. I now have it disesembled outside in the garage and I think I found the problem. I found what are called plastic tabs there are three of them ours are broke basically they hold a triangular metal shape called a suspension plate on ea. corner ( plastic tabs )
That noise is a worn out (stripped) drive block. The drive block is a large nut that sits down on the spin tube. There are two notches on the spin tube that fit into grooves on the drive block (kind of like how a key fits into a keyhole). If one of the notches on the spin tube gets bent inwards, the drive block no longer has a good grip on the spin tube. The more you use the washer, the drive block becomes stripped out as it tries to catch the spin tube. That is the noise you are hearing.
Tilt the washer back. Look at the transmission, behind the motor. Is it covered in oil. If it is you need to change the transmission. Alot of them blow the seal by the coupler and if the washer doesnt spin fast enough check this first. As far as the noise when it stops, check the brake assembly between the transmission and the tub.
Hey man i got a kenmore 80 series washer model number is 110.26882503.... Its only 1 year old i think and i got it from someone this last sunday and i was wondering if it was any good because the other washer i have is a kitchen-aid and it works ok but this washer is newer and i was wondering if it was any good.I will post a videop pretty soon of the new and the old washer.
Thanks for the comment. I had to adjust the alignment of the drive block . . . I had just replaced the basket drive and had put the drive block on the shaft without lining up the notches . . . :-) Everything is fine now!

That noise is normal. I used to have a Kenmore 70s series washer that did the same thing. It just recently died so we got a new Whirlpool.
