Sad people invest their time and energy into demos instead of making games... But I guess I know the answer: CPU cycles wasted already before implementing any game logic...
What utterly eats me alive in this demo is 8:52+. It isn't just that full-screen scaling on a 6510 is stupendously difficult to achieve, and that there's enough raster time
left for a music player, that'd be enough. The killer blow is the introduction of a new sub-bass effect and the fact it makes a crescendo summit-effect which means the whole demo is a dynamic linear composition, like a piece of visual music with a crescendo AND a technical tour-de-force. combined. Terrifyingly good.
Truly spectacular. This video convinced me to purchase an 8-bit Commodore home computer. Perhaps play some games on it - definitely write out demos from parallel port to 1571. I love the fact that they're portable and use TV sets, so I can drag it to friend's houses. It was this or a IIe afterall, and no comparison!
I get this machine in 2000 (somebody wanted to throw out it). About scene I knew in 2004. Coders who made demos like this one amaze me. They are masters of C64. Keepin on. Gigaherzes and powerfull 3d graphic cards is nothing. Art is to make somthing that's impossible on machine with 1 MHz, without powerfull graphic card.
Its strange because i sold my C64 in 1990 to buy an Amiga 500 but if this kind of quality had of been around back in 1990 i probably wouldn't have sold up and bought an Amiga ;) Don't get me wrong though, the C64 was back then with its software a phenomenal machine i do i not regret getting an Amiga one little bit! They are both THE best machines i have EVER owned :)

Can be the best demo ever made on C64. The 6510 looks like it executes as fast as the SNES 16-bit 65416 (is that it's number ?); the rotating multiculour #-D objects (even with animation effects) exceeds SNES StarFox; I can go on and on.
Absolutely speaking, the SNES has greater hardware capability than C64, but it is hard to tell witth this demo.
Great demo of the power of the C64, I feel proud to know some of the commands you use to produce some of the effects in the video. The C64 was the ultimate learning machine and the last computer that I felt like I had some intimate knowledge of.
I think the music for this is absolutely awesome. Especially 5:00 onwards. When you think of how one dimensional some game soundtracks are, and compare to this, well... it's an incredible bit of work. And that isn't even talking about the visuals!
@rvounik - You're right. Most people today would just go "who cares?" Because they didn't use computers back in this time and they don't have a proper frame of reference. You have to have lived through it in order to really appreciate a demo like this.
@adric22 I'm actually one of the few people from the "who cares" generation that *does* care. Even though Commodore was liquidated not long after my 4th birthday and never had one as a kid, I still love the machine, and many other older machines, a whole lot. They simply have more charm and mystery.
@rvounik Well, I'd class myself as a pretty experienced Commodore 64 assembler programmer and I adore this demo. Esp 8:52+, for me that's the best part of any demo on any platform of all time and I don't think, for feel at least, it can be bettered. I'd happily class this as one of the best demos ever written... and that's putting it mildly: It probably is the best demo ever written bar none.
Nah, I don't think it's a shame. I appreciate demos like this immensely, since I was there during the 80's and followed the C64 and Amiga scene, but we have to have progress, and I wouldn't want to be without games like Red Dead Redemption etc.
I'm also happy that the '64 lives on an that people still make demos for it - especially when they're as awesome as this.
The CPU in the SNES is based on the CPU in the C64, so I'd say that it's no problem at all. The thing is that it needs to be done in software, and not in hardware.
I totally like the smooth presentation and "crossfading" of each part. It connects the parts very nicely, while each part is outstanding on its own, accompanied by a great soundtrack.
I'm one of the biggest C64 heads you'll find and I've watched lots of demo vids on here, but what impresses me the most about this is the way they've managed to squeeze new colours that go beyond the 64's 16 colour palette. Excuse me while I go and pick up my jaw from the floor.
thankfully there are many fine coders about, who really do push the boundaries. I like the friendly rivalry of it all though. one coder lays down a gauntlet and another comes along and ups the stakes.. kudos to them whatever the format.

@maiki60fps I don't know. Demoscene people seem pretty happy to me, and demos aren't games, but a separate art form.

The final image in this video (9:18) what mode is that? How can the C64 display such a HiRes multi colour image like that?

@digitalman161 : thats a normal built in mode used cleverly (320x200, each 8x8 block can have 2 colors)
