I certainly wish UM well...except when they play MSU. Unlike some UM fans, I have a legit reason for being here (and put the damn sport aside, folks). If not for MSU I wouldn't have been born. My parents received fine educations from State and some in my family received degrees from UM. If it were the opposite I would be a diehard UM fan. And I will say I hope UM beats Ohio State... Half of Coach Hoke's speech was a swipe at Rich Rodriguez and deservedly so. I don't know of a college football coach in the modern era that has destroyed a program the way Rich Rodriguez did.
Coach Hoke was seemingly groomed for the job. Loyd Carr named him as the only Associate Coach to work for Michigan, and he worked 5 doors down from Bo. He was also responsible for recruiting the 7 west coast states for players like Leon Hall, Hayden Epstien, and Tom Brady. Hoke's former colleagues universally regard him as a man of great integrity, great toughness, and a great recruiter, in addition to being a great coach. His 2 coordinators are great friends of his and even better recruiters.
I'd love to see you brag about the degree State gave you. Did it involve a spelling contest? Obviously not. The AD offered the job to 1 candidate. Just like a Sparty, bringing a knife to a gun fight. This isn't pro wrestling, no mullets here.

I've been a Michigan fan for my entire life. This is a great hire for the football program. But, what I must say (and it is probably going to be unpopular amongst the Michigan faithful), is that the phrase "Michigan man" is way overused. Personally, I don't care where he comes from (as long as it isn't ohio state, michigan state, or notre dame). As long as he is successful and wins, nothing else really matters. Having a "Michigan man" as a coach is just a bonus -- not a necessity.

Alright, let me get my bias out of the way right now: I am a Michigan State guy. But just speaking OBJECTIVELY, UM absolutely BLEW IT with this hire. The simple fact is, this guy is the best thing UM could manage in an offseason where there JUST WEREN'T many noteworthy coaches to choose from. Like it or not, UM would have been better off just keeping Rich Rod for another year and then seeing what the crop of available coaches looked like next year.

Recruiting will go way up for UofM with Greg Mattison involved, but I think there will be a pretty even balance in midwest recruits in the near future for both. And I want to see not only an influx of the kind/type of players we need, but I want to see an end of the cookie cutter plays that has been a staple of the RR era. @bzurvalec You're entitled to your own opinion but I'm gonna disagree with you, respectfully of course, I think Rod had his time at Michigan and tho the offense showed a lot of promise at times, the defense just never got it done. Michigan hired a guy with a defensive mindset and in my opinion, that was the best thing we needed this year.

They were both players' coaches at a program in DESPERATE need of discipline at that time. Secondly, what exactly is your argument here? Hires that aren't a program's first choice often work out, therefore you're CERTAIN that this guy is going to pan out at UM? This is just very jumbled and confusing.

@kwilliams22332 Desmond Howard is one for sure, but both teams trade recruits so often now I can't tell the difference. Recruiting will go way up for UofM with Greg Mattison involved, but I think there will be a pretty even balance in midwest recruits in the near future for both. No more Mark Ingrams to the Shameless Equity Conference thank God.
